CGY trade looks fair on paper, but realistically only happens when you swap Nylander

Agreed. Need to try and look at it from CGY perspective. They're a team that feels their on the cusp of competing too (looking to acquire now-assets vs futures).

If you flipped the scenario and they were offering a 1st, 3rd, Mason Macdonald and Sam Bennett for Morgan Rielly...we likely say 'thanks, but no thanks;

One again the cost for Dougie Hamilton is William Nylander Doesn't take rocket science to figure that one out.

While I agree with your statement...It doesn't take rocket science to see you are voicing an opinion...not fact.

Agreed. Just my two cents that we can all do better on here (myself included) not expressing our opinions as facts

Attention anyone who says the cost of Hamilton is Nylander! To you all I say one thing, Hall for Larson. Yes I know Nylander isn't Hall and Hamilton isn't Larson, but Nylander will outscore Hamilton by a lot over his career. Is younger than Hamilton, and Hamilton has been traded because of his attitude. At least thats what Boston said, they also said the same about Segiun.

Also the Leafs can get much cheaper upgrades that would arguable make the team much better. For example, which would be a better lineup for the Leafs. Nylander up front and Tyler Myers on the blueline? Or a team without Kapanen and Nylander but Hamilton on the blue line. In my opinion, have those two forwards and Myers would make the Leafs a way better team.

Also Calgary is desperate, they'll be the ones overpaying since the GM will be on the hot seat if things turn south. TO has a lot of leverage currently and Dubas isn't going to get bullied in his first season.

I don't think it's the best comparison but certainly understand your point. And certainly agree with your logic that Myers would give the leafs a major upgrade without sacrificing a big asset (I don't view 25th overall as a big asset if that's the price for myers).

For me there's a Tavares factor. If the Leafs somehow manage to land JT, I think the Leafs would almost have to move Nylander if they want to also upgrade on D. Someone like a Hamilton or Parayko who could be our best RHD men...but on a contract lower than was Nylander is likely to land. More for cap purposes and the need for RHD.

So...if Tavares is in fact an option....are the leafs better with JT, Matthews and Marner up front and a guy like Hamilton on the backend...or Nylander, Matthews and Marner + a guy like Myers?

Either way I think the flexibility is there to shape a roster based on what trades/ufas are available.

Here is some rocket science, Toronto finished 6th in the league with the defence they currently have. Why take away two very valuable assets in Nylander and Kapanen for a piece that you could get a comparable for much less?

Apparent available RHD
Chris Tanev
Tyler Myers
Dougie Hamilton
Ristolainen
Pesce
Faulk
possibly Doughty and Karlsson

I think it makes a lot more sense to keep our roster intact and pick up one of the cheaper guys that can slot in to play with Reilly.

I think its doable to have Myers/Tanev (one of the other) Tavares and still keep the big 3. Toronto is in a great position, they have a lot of talent in the minors, and a young core. What they can do is have their top forwards under long term deals and then rotate the roll and support players in and out as people develop. Much like Pittsburgh seems to have been doing. Kapanen plays well enough to earn a big contract, trade him for cheaper comparables or guys just leaving their ELC's. Look at teams with cap issues, they all have guys in the 4.5-6 million range who are roll players or pluggers or declining vets. Toronto has none of those contracts. If they stay away from those, they'll be able to afford a top heavy lineup. Of course they'll still have to spend mountains of cash in player development, but judging by how well that's been working so far, I think its safe to say they will continue with this style of management.
