      Wow...that Carolina trade.

I agree 100% not even close
Scrap that Washington trade. Carlson will test the market, its his right as a UFA, even if he does resign with the Caps he needs to take a peek. Also have to think he'll get 8+mil .
Willy will get lots more then 4mil

I agree with your Carlson point.

Your Willie point reflects a lot of fans on this site though. Do you feel that Willie is a better shut down center than Kadri? Does he score more goals than Kadri? Does he play more physical than Kadri? Are we purchasing UFA years in the contract like we had to with Kadri?

Why again do you feel Nylander needs a bigger contract than Kadri???

got nothing to do with Kadri. Kadri wasn't considered and secondline shut down center with back to back 30 goal seasons when he signed that deal. If he was up for contract this year he would get 6mil+ everyday of the week

Look at other young top 6 forwards, RWers, with back to back 60 point seasons and see what Cap % they get paid. That's what Willy will get.

That's my point with Nylander. He hasn't either. Kadri was a more complete player that Nylander is now and was signed to a $4.5 MIL long term contract.

Nylander has been garbage in the playoffs scoring only 2 goals in 13 games and going -3 this year. If he isn't scoring than he should be shutting opponents down. He does neither but you folks want to pay him over $6 MIL. Wow.

Want to get flamed?? Post a trade of Nylander for $6.125 MIL Sheifele straight up.

I would like to do that with successful teams regarding contracts. Some teams are horribly run and give brutal contracts. Even though I have been a Leafs fan most my life, if the Leafs give brutal contracts (like Phaneuf's, Clarkson's, Buffalo's, Edmonton's, etc) then I will probably hang my Leafs jersey up until they are run like Tamba Bay, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, etc.

Nylander has shown way more promise in his first 3 seasons than Kadri did over his first 6 before signing his most recent deal. His career was headed in the wrong direction, suspended by the team, no consistency...the Leafs were actually taking a sizeable gamble on him when they signed him for 6yrs but he's turned around and has way-outplayed his current contract. So can't compare the two players in the least.

I think there's a decent chance he does a bridge deal...but that number will likely be at least 5m

good lord you can't make that trade. Scheifele is a great Bargain and the jets signed him after his first good season and lucked out, he is also a top line center, Nylander is not you can't compare the two.
So with your logic Ryan Ellis at 2.5 mil per year, did we over pay Reilly??? with your logic Top 4 Dmen are worth 2.5 mil????
      Crosby make 8.7 million
      where would that put Eichel???
where will Matthews land?? 8.7... he will be 10+ all day long
players get paid dollar amounts based on what comparable players get in regards to Cap %
which means that if the cap goes up the player will likely get a higher dollar amount even though its the same or less Cap %
Crosby got paid 14.5% in 2012 which equaled 8.7 mil
Malkin got paid 14.77% in 2013 which equaled 9.5 mil
Eichel got paid 13.3% in 2017 which equaled 10 mil
Crosby actually was paid more then Eichel based on Cap %

If I were to find comparable for Nylander and what cap % they were paid I would look at
      Hoffman 7.11% 5.2mil
      Eberle 10% 6 mil
      Huberdeau 8.08% 5.9mil
So, Willy should likely land around 7%-8%. Considering the Cap is likely to go up to 80 million this offseason and you can bet his agent will not sign before that which means based off a 80 mil Cap Willy would get 5.6-6.4 million per season. Granted, this is a small sample size but this is the way it works.

I appreciate the explanation. Also I appreciate the time you took to explain your position. That's classy.

I am a rabid Leaf fan but I do not think Matthews is better that McDavid or Eichel. In 7 games Matthews couldn't elevate his game against the Bruins which was his 3rd season playing against men in the playoff intensity. This wasn't his first rodeo.

I hear some here calling Matthews a generational talent which is a term used for players like Crosby, Gretzky, etc. I don't see him on that tier.

People have compared Marner to Kane. Really? I really like Marner but he is no Kane.

This hype surrounding these 3 and how much they should get paid reminds of people arguing that Phaneuf should get paid top dollar because he was the Leafs top defense man. I mean, I agree that he was but he was basically a 2nd pairing dman on any Stanley Cup contending team.

I also appreciate your extensive math demonstrated and if you are correct and Matthews makes $10 mil+ and Marner and Nylander make $6.5+ I will apologize for your brain hurting. I hope I don't have to eat crow.
