Frank Seravelli Suggests Leafs Sign DeAngelo
Lets just say Dubas takes a shot at this. DeAngelo is a very good player. Has a bad rep, I know. So a 1 year deal for cheap and it could pay off if DeAngelo keeps his mouth shut. If not, off to Robidas Island for the rest of the year. I don't think I'd mind If our boy Doobie gives it a shot. The only thing I heard that he did was get into a scrum with Georgiev, right?

Gards problems are overblown
Its not only turnovers.. its the IQ overall and lack of effort physically. What I see when Gardiner plays is a guy with loads of skill, with good speed and a good shot but finds himself in places he shouldn't be. He pinches when he shouldn't giving up 2 on one rushes the other way, he is consistently caught puck watching in the D-Zone and loses coverage a lot. Rather than taking the body of the puck carrier he lunges for the puck often times taking himself out of position or letting the carrier fly by him.
He consistently uses the center of the ice on clearing attempts over trying off the glass or up the boards which leads to better chances for the other team over more board play, granted at this point I have to think its the Leafs' Defensive system at fault here.
When I say physical play I don't mean hitting but what I refer to is having proper body position on the opposing players to block their path or lean on them in battles or clearing the front of the net... A lot of the goals scored on Freddy is because he can't see the puck and I know that net front traffic can't be eliminated, Gardiner could use a little more effort.
At this stage the Leafs don't need their Dmen to take unnecessary risks. they need Dmen to move the puck to their wealth of talented forwards and be vigilant of defense. I like Gardiner but he needs to be dialed back.

Plans for future - trades with TOR and NJ
I agree that the Marleau trade is a no go from the leafs side of things and I doubt he would waive his no-trade regardless even if it was to SJ because I'm pretty sure once the no-trade has been waived it would no longer exist meaning if he did allow a trade to SJ they could trade him again if they wanted to.

No need to panic ( tho i would like to see Panyk in TML )
The same happens in Arbitration cases. The players agent shoots for the moon and the team looks to get a good "cheaper" deal and after constant back and forth banter they will eventually meet somewhere in the middle... i'm willing to bet the leafs are offering 6ish and Nylander's camp would accept 7ish but asked for 8. They'll settle at 6.5 give or take. A lot of insiders have Nylander pegged at 6.4 x 6 years. The process is really reminding me of the flames and Gaudreau a few years back.

lol yeah, yeah, yeah... still a bit more then the 2.5 you offered. I just thought it made more sense for him to get 4-5 million for 5 or 6 years rather then 2 years at 3.387 then in 2 years have to sign him to potentially much more money... it just seems most teams are moving away from the 1-3year bridge deals and giving players with more upside longer deals.
Personally if it were me I would always want players with big upside that are coming out of their ELC's locked in until their last year of being RFA's which usually hits around age 26 so when they are looking for their big money 6-8 year deals it will end when they are still young enough to be good players.
ELC at 18/19
Last year of RFA 25/26 (no risk of asset walking for nothing) (UFA eligible = 7 years of service to team or age 27, whatever comes first)
6-8 year deal would bring them to 32-34
The thing is I thought Montour was around 22, not 24, so I was expecting that 3-5 year deal at around 4-5 million which is what would be market value. Murray seems to have the same idea I guess with the RFA status.
In any case your were partially correct, about the term yes, but about as far off with the money as my low end guess.
Alas, a deal is a deal

Core at Not-Too-Team-Friendly Deals
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfalstaff</b></div><div>Here are the comparisons I was looking at. It's by PPG, and I include the ages, since Marner's NHL productivity is coming at an earlier age than a lot of his production peers.
Pastrnak — 123 pts in 173GP (18-20yo) = .71 PPG. Signs after expiration of RFA contract for 8.89% C.H., for 6 years.
Taylor Hall — 95 points in 126 GP (19-20yo) = .75 PPG. Signs after 2nd season for 10% of the cap, for 7 years.
Vladimir Tarasenko = 135 points in 179GP (21-23 yo) = .75 PPG. Signs after contract ELC expires for 10.27% of Cap, for 8 years.
Bobby Ryan — 131 points in 168 GP (20-22yo) = .78PPG. Signs after expiration of ELC and holding out into September for 8.59% of cap, for 5 years.
Eberle — 119 points in 147 GP (20-21 yo) = .81 PPG. Signs after 2nd season season at 10% of Cap, for 6 years,
Mitch goes here. 130 points in 159 games (19-20 yo) = .82 PPG.
Gaudreau — 142 pts in 159 GP (21-22yo) = .89 PPG. Signs after ELC expires and holding out into Oct. for 9.25% of Cap, for 6 years.
So... I don't know. If it's Gaudreau, who was underpaid, you're at $7.5m on a deal that doesn't eat up many UFA years. But Marner's doing it younger, like Eberle and Hall, and I don't see the Leafs wanting to go less than 7 years. Nor do I see them dragging this out into next fall, since they'll be ripe for an offer sheet.
So, I'm figuring an Eberle and Hall sorta deal -- 10% of an ~82.5m cap for 6/7 years, and coming up with $8.25m as a starting point. Then, what would a Tarasenko-length deal (eating UFA years) be for a guy who's been more productive and done it younger? About $9m, or about 11% of the Cap.</div></div>
I love Marner, I think he is a star, I think eventually a superstar.
9 million for 20 goals is too much. The league premium is goals.

Core at Not-Too-Team-Friendly Deals
On 6-8 year deals I think Nylander is at 6-6.5 and Marner is at 7-7.5 , if they signed this summer.
I’m unsure why people are saying 9-10 million per year for Marner. He is not Kucherov or Draistal or Kane... he has played 2 years with 1 20 goal season and a career high of 69 points. That don’t get you Kucherov money. I compare him, cap hit concerned, to Pasternak and Gaudreau and considering the cap has been raised since they were extended I think 7-7.5 is market value, I would be shocked if he gets anymore then 7.5

Screwed in a year?
Horton’s LTIR won’t have any affect on what the leafs do.
A team can spend over the cap by 20% during the off season as long as the moment the regular season goes live that team is at or under the cap. So it won’t have any bearing In regards to who they sign during the off season.
The moment the regular season goes live LTIR players’s cap hit basically goes poof except when it comes to bonus money.
The Leafs are fine and will get the big 3 under contract, it may mean some of the support cast gets traded but that’s business.

Tavares and Tanev
The Leafs don’t want Tanev. He is a bandaid, he doesn’t stay healthy enough for his play to warrant any significant value. With 2 years left at that cap hit the Canucks are likely stuck with it. What the Leafs will be facing next year in regards to cap space and resigning the last thing they need is a 50 game player eating 4.45 mil in cap.

I wouldn't bet on Pacioretty being a Hab when the season starts, there were reports that a trade was all but completed with the Kings pending a contract extension but Pacioretty wanted more money then the Kings were willing to pay so the deal fell through. The Kings moved on and signed Kovalchuk. Then, Pacioretty fired his agent, he wants out of Montreal. The latest rumor is the Dallas Stars talks are heating up...
Tavares will be either staying with the Islanders or going to the Leafs. He and his Fiancee are both from the GTA, the wanting to be close to family when signing this next long term deal seems to make the most sense for the next chapter in his career and family life, especially considering the Leafs are starting what could be an incredible era for the Leafs. The Leafs have already been cited to be making videos for presentation and securing potential sponsors and endorsements to make the most lucrative money offer possible. 10-11 million in salary per year and 3-6 million in endorsements. If his decision was purely fueled by money I think Vegas would be the choice just from what he would save from taxes alone but he has ties to 2 teams, The Islanders because it is where he has been for 9 years and Toronto because that is where he is from, where his family is and where he dreamed of playing for the first 18 years of his life.

Faulk is an all-star, top pairing RHD, team Captain and has term left on a cheap deal. Even if the Hurricanes are going to sell low on him it will take more then Athanasiou and Svechnikov. I like the idea but I think you need to up the value quite a bit.
Detroit won this draft overall. Really good picks. Not going to credit Holland with the team having a bad year and picking early though, heck, I would have drafted the same players. He did get a Kings Ransom for Tatar but failing to move Green was a real stubborn look, a 2nd or 3rd rounder is better then nothing, especially in a deep draft.
