I thought that retaining 3 mil on ovis contract might get a bigger return

1. 17-18 deadline is over
2. Caps won the metro division even after losing 25% of their playoff roster haha
3. Ovi gets more than an ahl goal. An ahl winger. And a dman that due to talent on the caps would be a 2nd or 3rd pairing guy
4.backstrom is a top 10 center. More like 5-7 so that’s not even close.
5. Carlson is free to go to any nhl team so you get zero return on him
6. After seeing grub in the playoffs you wanna make him the full time starter?

I agree with what youre saying on most points. Although my trade valuations are off I do think that the Caps should rebuild now rather than wait. They aren't going to win with their current roster. No way they beat Pittsburgh or Tampa in the East.

My opinion is based on me being a canucks fan and seeing the canucks go from top of the hockey world in 2010 and taking their time to rebuild instead of trading players with value to jumpstart the rebuild.

Caps will be fine. Ovi shows no real signs of age.
Holtby is fine and will mentor samsonov who is a top 2 goalie prospect from the khl
Backstrom is only 30
The have Luca jo coming up djoo bowey hobb they are only thin on centers

If the Caps ask around, Buffalo and Arizona outbid that pitt offer with three 2nds and either Ristolainen or Ekman-Larsson.

Carlson trade is fine, but only happens if multiple teams agree Carlson deserves 8years at a higher cap hit than Seabrook. If term and AAV match, Carlson is better next year than all those guys.

Backstrom trade is a massive win for Montreal. Only works for the Caps if they are totally rebuilding and/or, have lucked into a more expensive, almost as good center in another trade, like if Chicago dumps Toews, or Carlson's best return is Tavares.

Overall, you're right that if the Caps rebuild this summer they can get a lot of good draft picks. But after the way Holtby and Backstrom played in Columbus, this second round is going to be a fun one.
