I actually think Toronto needs to add. Weird as that is to think I’m a trade where Nylander goes the other way

How so? Nylander and Tkachuk will probably both end up as 50+ point top six forwards, Nylander probably closer to 60-65. But they pretty much cancel each other out, then your getting a top pairing defenceman for a late first, Kapanen, and I don’t know the other prospect. That makes it pretty one sided for Toronto, I know Toronto fans think Kapanen is apparently a top line winger but I don’t see it. So basically Toronto gets two legit pieces for 1 proven piece, I’ll stand by my statement that they would need to add

Okay Habs fan... Tkachuck and Nylander don't "cancel each other out". Tkachuck is a pest and sure can put up points, but Nylander will put up more, he's versatile, and creates for Matthews. Look at Matthews goals 90% of them are assisted by Nylander. I'm not saying Nylander makes Matthews, obviously, but damn... and Willy can play center so his value just keeps going up.

Hamilton for the other pieces, I'd do without Rasanen and put in Leivo since Calgary is apparently looking for RHF and Leivo is a good player just in Babs doghouse... Kapanen is definitely a top 6 (top line if you're REALLY desperate) he's fast, great hands and vision, high hockey iq and he can play both special teams. Preferably, I'd rather not but whatever... Kapanen has proven himself so it's 2 for 2 proven pieces plus Toronto gives another "prospect" and a 1st in a deep draft.

I like the idea of getting Nylander because of the offensive upside he would for sure bring to that top line but, Calgary most likely wouldn’t trade Tkachuk for Nylander straight up Aswel as Hamilton for a late 1st round pick a top 9 toward that might be a fringe top 6 forward and a decent defensive prospect. Leafs fans may think that this is crazy but Tkachuk just brings to much to the table for Calgary to pretty much just swap him, since the new year he really started coming into his own and really showed he almost is and for sure will be the heart of the team, he hits, blocks shots, scores, passes, has remarkable skill that not a lot of people who arnt flames fans see, aswell as being a pest out there. I’m not saying Nylander doesn’t have heart but I am saying he wouldn’t be as impactful to the Calgary flames as Tkachuk is. Hamilton is a legit RHD that should usually get around 50 points and currently leads the leauge in goals for a defenceman, But sure he isn’t the best defender or is to soft but he’s still 24 and still has time to develop into a legitament top all around defenceman, so a decent top9/6 forward, a late first, and a defensive product for that doesn’t sound that amazing for me. But who knows, I’m not brad treliving so what do I know.

Id argue that Tkachuk is more versatile than Nylander. Tkachuk is a guy who can score goals, make passes, get under the other team's skin, and be a FORCE defensively. I really think Tkachuk is just scratching the surface of what he could be. He doesn't have Nylander's flash, but he does a lot for his team. I wouldn't do Tkachuk one for one for Nylander from Calgary's side. Add in Hamilton, and its a big hell no. Hamilton is what every single team is looking for in a defenseman. Big, fast, right handed shot, can score goals, make passes and is improving defensively, If Adam Larsson got New Jersey Taylor Hall, Douggie Hamilton could fetch even more. Toronto fans have to wake up on this one. Not going to happen.

This is an interesting trade. Reading the comments...it's easy to see how Calgary fans are attached to Tkachuk and Leaf fans to Nylander. You know you have a decent trade proposal when fans from both sides don't like it.

In the end I probably do it from a Leafs point of view. You're swapping top 6 wingers with opposite skill sets...then moving a good winger, prospect and mid-late 1st rounder for a top-4 dman. I'm not even a big fan of Hamilton but I'd still do the deal I think.

Everyone who ever compares the Edmonton-Jersey trade as the "going rate" needs to wake up. Edmonton got fleeced. That trade, at the time, was thought to maybe be the new market value for defencemen...but that never happened. You don't have to look past your own Hamonic trade to get a better idea of trade value for young Dmen...a first and 2 seconds...which is pretty much on par with 1 first, kapanen (former first round pick) and rasanen (2nd round pick)

ahhh...that's a tough one....I want to say 'yes' simply to avoid having to play against Marchand. The only thing holding me back is the length of Marchand's contract. He's signed until he's 36...albeit for a cap hit that will be lower than what Nylander is likely going to cost.

I'm going to say yes....I make that trade now...knowing I'll likely regret it in 3-4 years

Now what if it was Marchand of 3 years ago with the same contract?

He makes team Canada, has been near the top of the scoring lead all season...and for a portion, was getting Hart Trophy consideration. His antics distract from it, but his skill is first rate. As a leaf fan, I'd much rather play against Nylander than play against Marchand

But, Hamilton is far and away better than Hamonic, has been for a few years, is younger and signed longer term. I agree Edmonton got fleeced and admittedly loved seeing it. But if Calgary trades Hamilton, they can't do it for something along the lines of a Hamonic deal. There would have to be a star coming the other way.

Perhaps in hindsight. When each was respectively traded, I would argue that Hamonic’s value was higher than Hamilton’s. Just last year people were dogging on Dougie for underperforming
