Flames window just opened up again. They were one of the best defensive teams last year and just added Weegar, giving them maybe the best 1-to-6 defensive group in the league. Huberdeau can step in and replace Gaudreau and Pelletier should step in and thrive under Sutter with his play style.

Dreaming of Looch Monny cap dumps for Schmaltz and Kadri space
I honestly don’t’ think see the point in giving up valuable assets trying to dump Monaghan and Lucic. Both have 1 year deals so you’re only paying for cap space this season. Lucic is a good leader and an important physical presence on the 4th line. Monahan could still return to form, so if anything he may carry a little value. I like going for Schmaltz but you don’t need to give up both of them to make room (Kadri isn’t coming to Calgary). Monahan, Valimaki and a 1st seems like a good start, maybe throw in Zary if that doesn’t get it done.

The Hockey Gods
We've all heard commentators talk about the hockey gods when a team or player is snake-bitten or gets all the bounces, but who in the NHL's history would be a hockey god. Just for fun I picked a few former players or people from history who could represent the hockey gods.
<strong>Lord Stanley - God of Victory and Defeat</strong> – The head of the pantheon of the Hockey Gods, only those smiled upon by Lord Stanley himself ever have a chance to win his prize. The anger of Lord Stanley can result in decades of playoff disappointments for a player or an entire fanbase.
<strong>Gordie Howe – God of Time</strong> – The man who defied father time for so long takes his place in the pantheon, deciding when a player’s time in the league has come to an end. If smiled upon by Gordie Howe, a player might eek out a few extra years of their prime, while if he is angered, then the player’s decline begins.
<strong>Maurice Richard & Terry Sawchuk – Gods of the Posts</strong> – The Gods of the Posts clash in a never ending battle between goals and misses. A goalie who has gained Sawchuk’s favor with his play may have a few more pucks bounce out instead of in, while a player smiled upon by the “Rocket” may be rewarded with a goal off the post.
<strong>Bob Probert – God of Justice</strong> – The God of Justice deals with those who cross the line, ensuring that no action is without a reaction. Those in the God of Justice’s favor will be rewarded with safe passage, while those that anger him will be met with an opponent’s fist.
<strong>Eddie Livingstone – God of Tricks</strong> – The God of Tricks smiles on no one, creating only chaos. He is responsible for pulling the sheet over a referee’s eyes, just as a penalty is committed; for obscuring the puck from view, just long enough for a quick whistle; and for filling the minds of referees and executives alike with illusions of phantom penalties.
<strong>Jean Beliveau – God of Bounces</strong> – The benevolent God of Bounces is responsible for the miraculous moments that you couldn’t write up. When a player is smiled upon by the God of Bounces, the puck will follow him around all night. When the God is angered, they won’t see a bounce go their way all night. It is the God of Bounces, who in times of personal tragedy, may see fit to reward a player with a golden opportunity.

Drew Doughty
I heard them talking about the Drew Doughty-Matthew Tkachuk beef on Tim and Sid, where they really started talking up Drew Doughty. They started listing off the accomplishments, the Olympic Gold Medals (would have been hard not to win with those team Canada's), Stanley Cups (there were 22 other players on each of those teams) and the Norris Trophy (which is generally accepted as the classic "legacy" award, in that people thought "hey, Drew Doughty doesn't have one yet", and which he won while being tied for 9th in points, tied for 11th in goals, but did finish 3rd in point shares, all according to hockey-reference.com). They continued on to call Doughty a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. They call him one of if not the best defenseman of his generation, even though he's never been the best in any one calendar year (his Norris Trophy year included).
I'm wondering what other people think about him. Is he a generational talent defenseman that is a first ballot HOF-er, or is he a really good defenseman that played on some really good teams?

And they say the Leafs have a cap problem
Calgary needs to make two moves. Trade Brodie or Frolik. Buyout Stone. Then they're fine. Toronto has to move out a lot of salary to sign Marner, then have enough left over to fill the roster. Calgary will have stayed more or less the same, while Toronto has lost some key pieces, and will probably lose more.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>villenash</b></div><div>You're only convincing yourself that the preds want to do this deal, not anyone else. No one will touch the Neal contract unless they get something more. And Turris was dealing with injury for most of the year so I can give him a pass for his bad play this year at least (he was great for us the prior season) - I wouldn't want to trade him at his lowest value. And Turris plays a style that ages much better than Neal.</div></div>
Rumors are going around that Turris may be on his way out, and would be a similar situation to Neal that they would have to give something to get rid of him. I don't think its too much of a stretch that Nashville would look at a known commodity in Neal who has had success with them before and decide to make that move.

Turris: 29 years old; 6'1", 190 lbs; 5 years left at 6M; 16g, 51pts in 2017-18, 4-time 50-point player with limited playoff experience
Both players had difficult years with new teams (Neal - 7g, 12a, 19pts; Turris - 7g, 16a, 23pts). Neal had success in Nashville and Turris fits Calgary's roster better.

That's not the way trades go anymore, especially if the player isn't going to sign. Karlsson trade is a good example, 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, Chris Tierney (young-ish depth forward), Dylan DeMelo (NHL defenseman), Josh Norris (good prospect) and Rudolfs Balcers (other prospect). Karlsson was 28 when he was traded, Hall would be the same. Karlsson had a few prior injuries, as did Hall. Both were nominees for the greatest award at their positions the year before (Karlsson - 2nd for Norris, Hall - won MVP). You would have a hard time arguing that Hall is a more valuable player than Karlsson. Defensemen always win out over wingers (which is how NJ got Hall in the 1st place).
So temper your expectations, because you're going to end up getting quantity as opposed to quality, even for star players.

No way Giordano gets traded. By the end of June he'll be a Norris Trophy winner making only 6.75M per. Yes he's getting up there in age, but he doesn't have the hard miles on him like a Shea Weber. Giordano has the most value to Calgary where he is right now.

Flames signings
Bennett is a great character guy that could still turn into a top 6 forward, but up until now, he hasn't shown enough to get anything more than a prove-it deal for 1-2 years at 2-2.5M. Kapanen and Johnsson both had 20 goals and 40 points, where Bennett has struggled to get to 15 goals and 30 points the last few years. As for Tkachuk, the Flames have worked the cap really well, starting with Giordano's contract which set an internal max for contracts. Tkachuk will definitely set the new high, but he's a competitor who wants to win, and is probably Calgary's next captain. I think it more likely that he signs for 5-6 years at a lower cap hit (7.5-8M). As for Toronto, which is I think the point you're trying to make. They have 17 players signed with just under 9M in cap space, to resign at least 3 forwards and 2 Defensemen to round out the roster, including Marner who will take up more than they already have. Calgary has a bit of maneuvering to do. Toronto is poised to lose a top 4 defenseman (Gardiner), may be forced to trade two of their top 9 forwards (kapanen and Johnsson) and could lose (in my opinion) Marner, their best player to an offer sheet, unless they make some serious player-for-pick moves.

Trading Out of First Round
Don't think you'd need to include a 3rd with Stone. He still has some value and could probably go for a 4th or 5th rounder on his own. Only 1 year left on his deal so its by no means a serious cap dump. Offer Ottawa Neal and a second for Gaborik instead. I'm sure Melnyk would rather pay a guy to play than to be hurt and Ottawa could use the veteran presence. Flames could put Gaborik on LTIR and bury him for the cap space.

I got to say, I like this trade. We'll have to make room eventually for the young Dmen coming up and Dubnyk would be the best goalie we've had since Kipper. I think I'd put Zucker on the LW with Neal and Dube, that would give Dube some good wingers to work with. Bennett I think would be a better fit with Tkachuk and Backlund since that line doesn't need a star with them to be successful.

Tkachuk and Hayes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RWellington</b></div><div>Couple things:
1. Talbot will command more money, despite the down year. My guess is $3M x 2 to remain in Philly and expire as Harts 2nd deal is set to kick in.
2. Tkachuk why not 8 years and do you think he asks for that much more than Mon & Johnny? I would bet he goes team friendly $7M x 8</div></div>
I could see Talbot being undervalued, but if hes asking any more than that then we can find another option. I could see him taking a one year deal on the rival of the team that gave up on him.
For Tkachuk's deal I went more towards the worst case scenario, just to show that even then we would have the cap room to sign a guy like Hayes.

why not
We'd be a lot better off with Kylington still on the cheap than getting Cody Ceci and having to pay him upwards of 4M per season. Ceci plays big minutes but not necessarily at a high level. Kylington has shown a lot of confidence with the puck this season has a higher ceiling than Ceci does. They're not too far off each other as it is. Either way, Ceci would come in as another RHD which we don't need that might not even crack the top 6.

Kane To Flames
Calgary doesn't need Kane. they have Gaudreau who is younger, cheaper and really, at this point, better. They should focus more on 2nd and 3rd line depth than for a 9M+ guy in his 30's. Also I gotta think that that's not enough for him.

That's a lot for Ferland, and a lot for Stone. I don't see Calgary trading for Ferland, even though I loved the guy when he was here. And Calgary would be better off trying for a guy like Stone in the offseason. The team as it stands has great chemistry, and I don't know how much you want to mess with that. I think Calgary is better off keeping it as is at the deadline, and adding via free agency after moving out some salary at the draft (Frolik, Stone)

Actually, his best season so far is this season, and he's on pace for 40 goals and 94 points. Throw in his godly possession numbers and the fact that he's doing this while only playing with Monahan and Gaudreau on the powerplay, then you could come to the conclusion that he is quickly becoming a star in this league, worth star money. Don't undersell how good he really is. On an 8 year deal, he definitely gets 8M on the market. But Treliving has proven time and again that his true strength is keeping his own players signed to team friendly deals. He's proven that with Monahan, Gaudreau, Giordano, Hamilton, Hanifin, Lindholm and Backlund, and I'm sure he'll continue that with Tkachuk.
My guess is that he signs him for 5-6 years at around Giordano's 6.75M, keeping him at the team's in-house cap, and staggering the contract years for him, Monahan and Gaudreau

Kevin Hayes at the Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gofnut999</b></div><div>That won’t touch Hayes. Either in trade or the extension amount.
Using Kane as an example is not ideal as he is a locker room cancer and all-around douche that most teams would not touch driving his trade value down.
Rentals still have value to cup contenders. That will never change. And the fact you signed him to an extension takes away the rental arguement. Can’t have it both ways.</div></div>
I'm pretty sure teams have it both ways every year. The fact remains that you're never going to get as much for a player on an expiring contract as you would on the same player with term (obviously unless that player has a terrible contract like a David Clarkson or Milan Lucic). You think the Senators would have gotten more for Karlsson this past summer if he had a long term deal? Of course they would have. Instead they get an underwhelming package with a couple picks, and an extra one if he re-signs.
In any case, sure, Hayes is probably worth more than that, but don't be surprised if the eventual return on him is underwhelming. Rarely are teams happy these days with the return when they sell one of their best players as a rental.
I'd be fine with signing him in free agency too, and save the assets. I have a hard time thinking he wouldn't want to sign with Calgary, a team with a young core, three good, young American-born players, and his former college wingman in Gaudreau. Brad Treliving is a genius when it comes to contracts, they can afford to pay him over 8M a season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could get him to sign at under 6M.

Kevin Hayes at the Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ragsandbluesfan</b></div><div>Thats not enough for hayes</div></div>
A good trade comparison would be Evander Kane last year. Similar age, similar production, both UFA's, Kane would have been probably a bit more valuable as he had been a bit more productive, on a bad team. As a rental, San Jose gave up a late 1st, and conditional 4th that became a 1st if Kane re-signed, and Dan O'Regan, a 24 year old former 5th round pick, who might end up as a depth forward at best.
Given what San Jose gave up for Kane, I wouldn't say that Hayes would be worth much more than I've listed (maybe switch a 2nd for a 1st if he re-signs). 2 second round picks are really good draft capital, Jon Gillies is a BIG, well regarded goalie prospect, and Mangiapane is a scoring machine, that has scored at every level he's played at. He could figure to be a potential top-6 forward if he pans out.
All that being said, Hayes is a rental, and GM's have really smartened up over the last few years.
