Why Nylander plus a 2nd for Hanifin? Shouldnt this kind of trade just go straight up?

Nylander is about 6.75m player, and you signed Hanifan for 4m. Can't you conclude for this, that the Nylander is a superior player? But mostly the Leafs have plenty of LHD. Don't need another. If Nylander is to be traded it would be for a position of need. Signing Bozak for four years......too long.

The trade doesn't fix the defensive problem because Hanifin is a left-hander. The signing of JVR wouldn't allow for Matthews and Marner to be signed for the next season. The 4-year Bozak signing is too long, would be more like a 2-year contract

There’s still room to bring back JVR, marner and Matthews.

I’d be okay giving bozak 4 years but only if the cap hit comes in around $2.5

Or even the 2nd going the other way. IMO Risto > Hanifin and most pretend GM's thought Risto for Nylander was close to being a fair deal. What do you think?

I give you 5 stars simply for the idea of getting a d-man for a forward.

If Bozak comes back at $2.5 then that's a different story, then there is a room for all 3 players. But then what about resigning players like Kapanen. I think for this too work, there needs to be a way to get the Martin contract out.

    WTF??? Where to begin...

Way to long for Bozak at that price.

That trade is shocking!! Wow terrible!!! It'd be a 1st coming the other way not a 2nd this way.

If you trade Nylander to the Canes it better be for Pesche+.

We'll be conservative and use a $78m cap for 18-19 although reports are suggesting it will be upwards of $80m next year and $82 the year after.

    Forwards under contract:
    Marleau: $6.25
    Kadri: $4.5
    Martin: $2.5
    Hyman: $2.25
    Brown: $2.1
    Matthews: $925k
    Marner: $895k
    Kapanen: $864k
    Leivo: $925k
    TOTAL FORWARDS = $21,237,500

Forwards to re-sign: Nylander, Johnsson + any UFA's you opt to re-sign
Forwards needed to sign or call up from AHL: 4

    Defence under contract:
    Rielly: $5m
    Zaitsev: $4.5m
    Gardiner: $4.05m
    Hainsey: $3m
    Dermott: $863k
    TOTAL DEFENCE = $17,413,333

D to re-sign: Carrick and Polak would need new deals if Leafs choose to keep either
D needed to sign or call up from AHL: 2

    GOALIES:
    Anderson: $5m
    McElhinney: $850k
    TOTAL G = $5.85m

    MISC:
    Kessel: $1.2m
    17-18 Bonuses: $2,550,000
    18-19 Bonuses: $4,550,000
    TOTAL MISC = $8,300,000

    CAP: $78m
    Commitments: $52,800,833
Space: $25,199,167 (This assumes Horton is again placed on LTIR in the offseason)

So...for next year you have $25,199,167 to spend on 3 forwards and 2 defencemen.

We'll be conservative again and say:
    Nylander: $7m
    JVR: $7m
    Johnsson: $1m
    Carrick: $1m
Centre: ? Let's say Bozak @ $4m just for the sake of it
    7th Dman: $900k
    TOTAL = $20.9m

So with a $78m cap and the above signings...Leafs still have about $4.3m in space for 18-19

Now we move to 19-20 when we'll have the big RFA signings. We'll use an $80m cap hit

    Forwards under contract:
    Nylander: $7m
    JVR: $7m
    Marleau: $6.25
    Kadri: $4.5
    Bozak: $4m
    Martin: $2.5
    Hyman: $2.25
    Brown: $2.1
Johnsson: $1m (assuming he signs for more than 1 year in the previous year's deal)

    TOTAL FORWARDS = $36,600,000

Forwards to re-sign: Matthews, Marner, Kapanen, Leivo?
Forwards needed to sign or call up from AHL: 4

    Defence under contract:
    Rielly: $5m
    Zaitsev: $4.5m
    Carrick: $1m
    Dermott: $863k
    TOTAL DEFENCE = $11,363,333

    D to re-sign: Gardiner? Hainsey?
D needed to sign or call up from AHL: 3

    GOALIES:
    Anderson: $5m
    TOTAL G = $5m
    G to re-sign: Pickard/Sparks
    G required to sign: 1

    MISC:
    Kessel: $1.2m

    CAP: $80m
    Commitments: $52,800,833
Space: $25,863,667 (This assumes Horton is again placed on LTIR in the offseason)

By paying 17-18 AND 18-19 bonuses on next years cap, you avoid carrying over any bonus penalties to the following year. It essentially opens up $7.1m in cap space for 19-20 when you have Marner, Matthews, Gardiner and Kapanen due for new deals.

    So..you have $25,863,667 to spend on 4 forwards, 3 D and 1 backup tender

    Matthews: $11m
    Marner: $7m
    Kapanen: $3m
    Back-up Goalie: $1m
    Liljegren?: $925,000
    Grundstrom/Aalonen?: $925,000
    Bottom Pairing D-man 1: $1,000,000
    Bottom Pairing D-man 2: $925,000

    Cap Space: $61,667

So..it's tight...but we used conservative contract numbers and cap ceiling figures. We also assume everyone maxes out their performance bonuses in 18-19. So there's room to re-sign everyone....but if the Leafs choose to re-sign JVR...they're limiting themselves from going after a veteran d-man via trade or UFA signing and essentially hope 2 of they prospects turn into legit NHLers by 19-20
