Thanks for your input. I was wondering how Ducks fans might feel about this. Kane at $2.6mm isn't overpaid, tho. He also hasn't fallen off a cliff (4G in last 7GP). He's been saving himself for the trade as well. I think you'd be getting 1st half of the season Kane: 34P(15G 19A) in 37GP.
Yes, at $2.6M he's not overpaid, but, he's not on $2.6M, he's on $5.25M and he only produces 20 goals and 20 points a season, is pretty "meh" defensively, and quite often misses at least 10+ games a season due to injury. That's terrible and he's probably going to want more and will walk when we don't give it to him. I mean, his cap hit is 5.25M, but he's actually getting $6M in salary. I have no doubt he'll want at least $6M per moving forward and he's just not worth it.
Anyway, very few teams will need retention at the TDL. The cap hit is prorated based on how many games are left in the season, so no one needs to take on his full cap hit. I mean, the Ducks currently have $15M in cap space. Even Kane's full cap hit wouldn't be a problem for us to take on (not that is even the case because we'd only be taking on Kane's cap hit that BUF hasn't already taken on throughout the season i.e. a fraction of Kane's full $5.25M cap hit). Therefore, we're not going to give you extra value to retain on him.
Yeah, 4 goals in 7 games, but 7 pts in 26 games. Brutal! No thanks.
I don't want Kane at all, but I think teams like PIT may be interested. They look like they might even need some retention or you to take a dump, so you may get a better offer from them. But by "better offer" I mean a 2nd + another pick, not NHL ready prospects or 1st round picks. It's a buyers market and Kane just hasn't been as good to finish the season.
