Gudas is averaging over 20 minutes of ice time a game and has played on the right side of the top pair all season in Philly, a team that has a glut of defenseman. He's come a long way and is now a solid stay at home defender that can check and block shots with the best of them and has a super friendly cap hit. The Bruins D has holes and needs a guy exactly like this to help plug them. Joe Morrow is not that guy, and why continue to wait for him to develop when you have two better young defenseman on the team right now in Trotman and Miller and future stalwarts like Zboril, Lauzon, and O'Gara waiting in the wings. Morrow for Gudas this year makes all the sense in the world.
As far as Yandle, I agree that he's over-rated (especially in Boston), but the reality is he's the best D-man on the market this summer and he's not staying in New York, so why not make a run at him early to help out this year and see if he's a good fit before you overpay for him in free agency? Khokhlachev has no future here and a 1st or 2nd round pick as big a deal after last year's draft re-tooled the system so well. The Rangers won't be "sellers" persay, but neither will the Bruins, yet the Eriksson rumors continue. It's a seller's market this year and trading pending free agents could yield big results. The Rangers want young forward prospects. Koko is a point-per-game player in the AHL and is only 22. Someone is going to give him a shot to succeed.
The point of both these trades is not only to bring in more talent on the back end, but to maximize the utility of the guys we already have. Chara and Seidenberg would be far more effective playing less. If they're your 2nd pair in the playoffs and can rest down the stretch, the Bruins will be in good shape come April.
