Description
Hoping to get a technical discussion going to see if we can figure out what cap space we have to work with at the deadline.

THINGS I KNOW:

1. Under no circumstances can we let performance bonuses for this year carried over to next year's cap

2. $3.7m is the conservative number for performance bonuses earned this year. Unless Par Lindholm turns into Pavel Bure or Ozhiganov turns into Paul Coffee, they aren't sniffing any performance bonus money. So that's $1.7m we can knock off the $5.4m figure that CapFriendly shows.

There's also a real possibility now that Matthews won't hit his Schedule A bonuses if he doesn't snap out of this funk. His $2m kicks in most likely if he's top 10 in points or goals per game. He's sitting 5th/7th in the per game columns currently.

3. Horton has not been placed on LTIR this season (nor has any other leaf)

4. I enjoy you guys

THINGS I THINK I KNOW:

1. If a team uses any kind of LTIR relief in the season that causes their average annual cap to exceed the cap limit of $79.5m, all performance bonuses will get carried over onto the next year's cap

2. The Leaf's projected cap hit is $73,962,231 according to this website

3. We need to add last year's bonuses ($2.55m) and account for the $3.7m in this year's bonuses...which already puts us over the $79.5m ceiling. Does this mean we're already in a position to carry some bonuses over?

THINGS THAT CONFUSE ME:
1. Does adding Horton to LTIR at any point this season automatically force us to pay all performance bonuses this year?

2. Do we realistically have ANY cap space to play with this year?

3. How to calculate any of the above

I think you nailed it. Putting Horton "on the roster" shows that Leafs have 2.588,889 of true cap space. Want to pay the this performance bonuses this year....they come out of that 2.588889m
I'm 99% certain Horton has to be on the roster ALL season to be eligible for to pay performance bonuses in the same year.
So yes, the Leafs could very well have a carry over of about 1.2m in performance bonuses.
This is the only year that Horton really affects the cap. Next year for sure he will be on LTIR as he was in previous years as was Lupul.

Leafs going to have about 2.5M in peformance penalties next year, most likely.

Assuming Marner/Matthews/Kappy all resign for 24M~
That leaves Leafs about 2.5M over the cap, and that includes Horton on the LTIR>

Can anyone explain why Marincin has been on the NHL roster all season? That cap space could eat up performance bonus money.

I was confused when they re-signed him. My best guess is that both Sparks and Marincin making this team are the product of their championship run with the Marlies which Dubas was the GM of...and maybe has some emotional ties to those guys

And so it’s probably silly talk to think of even adding a vet rental this TDL without similar cap space being traded back?

I mean, this site is all for fun and more interesting when we bounce trade ideas around...but if every dollar used of the $2.59m in space is a dollar added to next year’s cap...a rental makes 0 sense. Yes?
