Description
This seems like the best solution.

Marleau gets to stay where he wants to be, Leafs don't upset Marner and Matthews by trading away their backup dad.

Arizona gets a 2nd round pick for absorbing very little real money ($416,667 x 2). His full cap hit (6.25M) remains on their books for 2019-20 (helping them reach the floor as they have replacing Bolland's IR cap hit). Sent back Connauton as a bottom pairing D to the Leafs, saving Arizona another 1.5M real dollars. Could be any warm body though. Leafs could resign Hainsey to a 1 year 1M deal instead.

Seems like the sort of deal that two young GMs would make.

Marleau actually makes more real money in this scenario. Leafs likely keep him on after he retires at a sweet salary as a coach/consultant/scout since he wants his family in Toronto so his sons can play competitive hockey.

Resigned Gardiner at a team friendly deal, but they could choose to go after a UFA like Myers instead. I think Gardiner is the type to take less to stay where he is comfortable though.

Nylander deal is signed on December 1, maximizing the cap reduction in following years. Real deal is:

2018-19| $10,000,000 | $10,130,000

Zero chance this happens. AZ isn’t going to be cap dump central anymore. They’re paying their players and are getting closer to becoming playoff contenders.

yes, but they do not have anyone that requires a significant raise for next year left. So why not get a 2nd round pick for taking on marleaus cap hit for 1 year, and paying him 800K over two years because of a buyout. It's a win win. It makes AZ better long term with an extra high pick.

Literally everyone in this transaction benefits. Marleau gets more money, still plays for the leafs. Leafs get cap relief. Arizona gets a pick, and doesnt hurt their ability to sign anyone long term. what's not to like?

Best case scenario really. Everybody benefits from the signing bonus heavy contract here, although who ever took the buyout deal would take the full 6.25 cap hit, it would only cost the franchise 800k to buyout

Buying out Marleau doesn’t save any money. His cap hit is still the same 6.25M because he signed his contract after the age of 35.

Not to mention even if AZ somehow saved on the 6.25M they have 5 RFAs to pay plus a Keller extension.

Look the one issue with this trade is getting marleau to agree to it. That's it. There are literally no other issues with this trade .

It saves actual money if ARZ buys him out, not cap hit. Instead of paying his 1.25 mil of salary they pay 800K over two years, leafs cover the signing bonus, but ARZ would just have to manage the cap hit of 6.25 in 19/20.

keller doesn't require an extension until 20/21,, so not an issue. So you're left with panik, crouse, perlini, archibald, lyubushkin or miska needing significant raises for 19/20? that's what youre telling me. They don't and it's a non-issue.

Effectively ARZ gets a high pick for 800K, and no impact on signing anyone. Anymore questions?
