Based on this season has progressed so far, it might be in the Leafs financial interest (not necessarily best interest) to sign Matthews and Marner up for 5 years deal, which has been a trend with some of the bigger superstars that ultimately signed max term deals on their very next contract. That would at least give them wiggle room to get other stuff done. If Matthews and Marner come in at $12 mil and $10 mil, respectively, along with $11 mil for Tavares, you can not only count Gardiner as gone, but I doubt Leafs could keep Kadri long term. I know it's a little ways away, but if the Leafs are looking long term, they have to consider Reilly's next deal. At this moment, he's playing like a $7-8 million AAV kind of defenseman. Hopefully the cap keeps going up, but I wouldn't be surprised if the "hard" cap is changed to a "soft" cap in the next CBA, which would certainly benefit the Leafs.
