The guy wants to get paid what he's worth. If I was the agent of a defenseman with his quality of competition and possession stats I'd want that guy to get paid 7mill/yr too. If the GM wasn't offering in the ballpark of that kind of money and I calculated that unrestricted free agency would be more profitable, I would tell said defenseman to stay the course through arbitration.
If Trouba legitimately wanted out of the city and team, he could request a trade, and force Chevy's hand. He's done it before, so I doubt he's forgotten, and he has exponentially higher leverage now than before.
There is zero risk in playing him this year, trying for an extension before the 2019 draft, and trading him if things go sideways at that point, and we get an elite defenseman at about a .5-1.5mill discount while we're making a cup run.
