Description
Trade can happen before the season, or at the deadline with the picks in 2019. I think they need to capitalize on Staal's high value, and bring in young prospects and draft assets with hopes to resign staal for a short term deal after this year. Mini reload, and CBJ gets a 1a/b goal scoring center they need for a serious playoff run. If CBJ doesn't want to take Ennis, pick should be a 1st next year instead. Jenner is big physical center who has yet to breakout, but is a great playoff player, Tarasov is a highly respected goalie prospect and Sherwood is a top OHL center who will play AHL this year unless he makes the team out of camp.

They're both one-year guys, so that's doable w/r/t our salary cap considerations, and if Jenner really wants that much it's arguably even desirable. So yeah, the Jackets could work with that. Sucks to lose Tarasov, but we already have Korpisalo and Merzlikins and Kivlenieks, so there's depth there, even if Tarasov is one of the better prospects we have.

If we somehow manage to pull Kivlenieks over to North America this year, by the way, Korpisalo potentially becomes available. Won't be easy as HC Lugano is basically saying "nope nope not even if he asks nope", but we'll see.

Eh I think CBJ should actually keep korpi and look to trade bob, let korpi and elvis fight for the job so they can build around their young talent, especially panarin and werenski. We have duby for 3 more years so a real young goalie prospect makes the most sense. The Jenner #s were based off of these yearly projections https://twitter.com/Cane_Matt/status/998562331717234688 . Not sure I agree though considering they have W. Karlson 6x5.1M which seems way low and boone seems high.

You think that's low for Karlsson? His numbers screams regression. I would be super cautious about giving him big money over term based on one highly unsustainable year. I would definitely go for a cheaper bridge deal and tell him he'll get megastar money if he can do it for 2 more years. If he is able to repeat his performance, you can extend him for a massive payday. If not, you aren't on the hook for a cap crippling contract for a mediocre player.

I don't disagree with trying to go that route, I just don't think there's a chance that he agrees to that. He's earned the right to cash in, and regardless of the stats and potential regression, he's a #1 center on a stanley cup team that scored 40 goals. He'll get paid more than he maybe should, and if he helps them win this year then he's earned it. 6x6M feels realistic in today's NHL after this year's success.

I'd gladly take him to arbitration then. Karlsson's side would probably struggle to find someone who had a breakout like he did that was able to sustain it. I'm not sure there have been many players to go from full season goal totals of 9 and 6 to 43 much less those who have been able to sustain it. His big year will definitely get him a bump but I don't think 1 good year justifies a contract like you're suggesting.
