TDL 2022 adding without mortgaging the future

Didn’t know a ton about Copp, but based on his player card and stats I’m not sure he’s much of an upgrade from Freddy and his defense makes me very nervous. Good passer, but I think the Wild should either trust what they have or go for a bigger upgrade at 2C rather than trade strong defense for another passer on that line.

Not a lot of high skilled players seem like a good fit but that is what CBJ need. Worked well with Panarin so there might be a chance.

Remove the 2nd and add a Robinson/Bemstrom from CBJ? Not a fan of either team but the fit is there.

Key question will be term. I think 6x6.5M may be what it takes. He's MNs best defenseman when you consider all around game. Better offensively than Suter and better defensively than Dumba, very underrated.

The Wild have Suter and Brodin on the left side so the fit doesn't make much sense. I like that Ghost is 25, offensive and signed but I still think Spurge is worth more than 1 for 1 even if the fit made sense. I'd bet the wild extend him, and try to move Brodin if they want to mess with their defense.

If I ran the Wild, he would get a 5 year deal MAX...and I would push hard for a 4 year deal.</div></div>
Not sure what his height or weight have to do with his abilities as he gets older but I think 5 is fair. I went 7Y to keep the AAV down because if I were spurge, I would want Suter money and it'd be tough to afford over 7M.

Minnesota Blockbuster (Reversed, trade w/ EDM & added CAR/DET)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>Subban, RyJo, Turris, Forseberg were all trades by NSH, but those were all just depth guys.
Jets have been bad since their existence until last year. 3 total Playoff berths in 18 years. Not the level of suckatute I want to endure.
TBL has an excellent GM that wins a lot of trades. Everything he touches turns to gold it seems.
BOS has drafted well and didn't tank/selloff to do it.
WSH has drafted well, but they've been known as Playoff failures until this season.
PIT tanked and it worked. Crosby, Maklin, Staal, MAF in a 4 year span of 1 or 2 OA picks. Way different draft rules then. They have also missed on most of their picks since that 4 year run of awfulness (07 draft and later), only 2 of their draftees (Muzzin and Maata) have played 300+ NHL games.
Bos route is the way I'd prefer to go. Pens had 5 awful years, Kings had 6 awful years, Hawks spent a decade in the dumpster. Pit and Chi almost lost their teams too during that time. Winning the cup would be great, but having to watch 5-10 years of awful hockey to get there isn't worth it to me.</div></div>
So basically you don't think its worth taking the risks needed to be great(because you could fail), so may as well be mediocre so it is watchable? I have literally never heard this take before, what a strange attitude. That last sentence in your post (which should read "Winning the cup would be great, but THE POSSIBILITY of having to watch an unknown number years of awful hockey to get there isn't worth it to me.") is something I can't relate with at all. Winning is what matters, and you have to take risks to get there. I bet you every WSH fan there is would say those years of playoff failures were all worth it. PIT fans would agree. If you don't believe you have a chance to win, reload, get younger and try again has to be the attitude.

Really unless it's a Matthews or McDavid the rest really don't mean jack squat. Even teams with high draft picks yearly get stuck spinning their tires in the mud for a decade or so: EDM, BUF, AZ, etc.</div></div>
I mean NSH/WIN/TBL/BOS/WSH/PITT have all built through the draft, it works more often than not. Im not sure what your strategy is that would be better than letting the guy who helped turn around NSH and load up their depth try to do the same for MN. Let me know though.

Nino if they want him is fine with me, but I think the Foligno contract being moved and getting Geekie are the main things I liked. The EDM trade was <a href="/users/oilers4life" target="_blank">@oilers4life</a> 's trade, I hate taking on Lucic and didnt want strome but I went with his framework. Ideally I would go Puljujarvi for Spurge and work from there.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>And build from what in 3 years? The prospect pool isn't good. Maybe one of KEE, Greenway, Kaprizov, or Kunin turns into a top line player, none of them are can't miss players. Nino and Zucker are middle pair guys already. Parise/Suter are a $15m cap hit and 3 years older. 2-3 years will turn into 5-6 years easily.
JEE goes from AHL replacement level to big minutes 2C over the of the summer? Kunin and Greenay would be better off in the AHL and not trying to develop playing shutdown duties with Koivu.</div></div>
That's the point, build the prospect pool with picks and guys like Geekie or other prospects from trading the guys that have value but can't get over the hump. I think fundamentally we do not have the pieces now to seriously compete so you need to move guys. You can develop young guys in the NHL and it would keep people in the seats while they retool, but if they want them in the AHL that's fine. I get that Parise and Suter are not getting any younger but aiming to retool for 2 years down the road rather than delusionally going for it with the same guys seems smart to me.

Also Columbus needs centers not really wingers, but mostly they just need top end talent. I think Staal would be a good fit on their team

MN doesn't want left handed guys and gets older, not sure why they would give all three up for that package, let alone with a 2nd.

In the MN trade I don't see you getting a 2nd with a 40 goal scoring #1 center for Faulk, even if he only has a year left. Maybe 1 for 1 if MN really likes Faulk and wants to sign him to an extension, but I don't see it with his numbers. They would be absolutely screwed up the middle without a corresponding move if they dealt Staal, it would signal a rebuild and they would want futures coming back.

This doesn't even guarantee an extension, but even so it is more than enough. Kaprisov is one of the best prospects not in the NHL and trading him alone would be nuts if there was no extension in place. And since he wants to go to Florida/NY/Chicago/LA that wouldn't happen regardless. The other 3 pieces may not be what Jarmo wants but he won't get much more value than that without an extension in place, and with that limited list im not sure why those teams would do that either.

Duchene and moving Bob to CAR: Does this get Panarin to stay?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dirtysaucedonny</b></div><div>I agree with you that it would be a good deal for the Sens, but disagree that Wennberg "could easily turn out to be better than him" Duchene is a former 3rd overall pick and Olympic gold medallist. People tend to forget how good he is since he played on an atrocious Avalanche team two years ago and struggled for half this year with the Sens. I would not be surprised if he puts up a nice 25g,35a this year. Wennberg put up 13g, 46a in his best season, and is only 3 years younger than Duchene. There's absolutely no basis to think Wennberg has been, or ever will be, a better player than Duchene.
That being said, getting a first round pick, young playmaker and first round pick two years ago sounds great to me as an Ottawa fan That Duchene trade will haunt us for years if he doesn't resign, and this would definitely soften the blow. However, I do think Columbus ends up with a very good player out of this too that would also allow for PLD to play a bit more favorable minutes instead of taking on first line responsibilities as a 20 yr old. Plus, maybe all Panarin needs to be convinced is that there is a chance of winning and the team is trying to build up around him. If that's the case though, you won't want to be getting rid of Bob. Even if he has underwhelmed in the playoffs, CBJ isn't half the team they are without him.</div></div>
I get the risk but if salary issues mean they cant afford werenski/panarin/Bob I think you have to move Bob for a haul. I really do like Korpi and Elvis is in the pipline for Columbus, and it any of those two and Darling can make it work you gotta do it.
