I am a little confused by your Nylander bonus plan. First, I am assuming the bonuses are a signing bonus, right? Next, are you saying that you are paying out an $11 million signing bonus to him this summer (since he needs to resign as an UFA) over what would otherwise be $1.37 million a year over 8 years for Nylander to basically take 8 years at $6.37 million AAV? I am not a CBA expert, but I am pretty sure this plan at least borders cap circumvention. I understand where you are coming from. You are trying to use the excess money the Leafs would potentially have this offseason before that money dwindles when they need to resign Matthews and Marner, correct? As has been mentioned above, I believe the CBA counts bonuses against the cap anyway, PLUS, I believe a player can only receive a signing bonus of up to 10% of their salary.
If the Leafs somehow move up in the draft, I think their eye is 100% on Evan Bouchard. Not sure the pick it would take to draft him is attainable as he may go as high as 5th. At pick 10, I could see the Leafs drafting either Noah Dobson, Oliver Wahlstrom, Joe Veleno, Barret Hayton or Joel Farabee (order based on availability at pick). I think they stick where they are though and try and draft Jared McIsaac (who would potentially partner well with Timothy Lilegren's game) or Ryan McLeod.
