Ottawa starts rebuilding with a boom in their roster. They have decided to sell their best player, who has been rumoured to become an UFA. Their team as it is is good, but not enough to be a contender, just like it has been partially their whole history. They're getting some pieces for their new start via this trade.

Détails additionnels:
Sign & Trade. Signed 8 years, $11.5M contract, then traded.

Boston is used to have a top-tier defenseman in their roster. In the beginning of 2010's, they had Chara, who has in the TOP5 in the league. Currently, they're missing such a piece, and from Karlsson they'd get just that.

Wouldn't the Bruins be a lot better off keeping those six young assets and sign John Carlson, and save 4.75m?

Actually, that's fair point. But as said, Carlson isn't that of a top-tier d-man, when compared to Karlsson. You can get a decent d-man and keep some of your young guys, or you can try to get arguably the best d-man in the world, without the youngsters. It's give or take really.

No chance that Boston would do that deal.

That's far too much for Erik Karlsson. Not only are they giving up one of the best young defensive defensemen (Carlo), they are giving up two stud prospects (Bjork and DeBrusk) and then two more top prospects (1st round picks) and then the established top-nine player in Ryan Spooner.

Even if we consider this "fair", what's to stop Boston from just signing Erik Karlsson? Essentially Boston is trading two A+ prospects (Bjork and DeBrusk), a stud young defensive defensemen (Carlo), two B+/A- prospects ((2) First round picks), and established top-nine forward Ryan Spooner for negotiation rights to Erik Karlsson.

Boston should just go after Oliver Ekman-Larsson, John Carlson, Ryan McDonagh, Mike Green, Drew Doughty, Calvin deHaan, etc. rather than giving up a ton for Erik Karlsson, who btw doesn't even guarantee them a cup.

As it seems others have already covered the trades.... I don't believe that Carlson would sign for only 6.75mil, I'd say in the 8-9 million range, he's going to want to get what he is worth IF he hits the market.
