So AZ, or whoever gets #1OA, is going to trade away a potential franchise player for a 1 yr rental of Patches? That's all it will be is a rental of Patches. He's under no obligation to stay in AZ after his contract is up. He'll get similar money elsewhere as a UFA, and be on a more competitive team.

Any draft pick has some risk of busting, but top-3 picks are usually pretty good bets to become impact players.

When I made this, it was based on the idea that MTL would have a top 5 pick (i think they were sitting bottom 2 or 3 at the time). I think that your top three rule likely applies to the top five in this years draft. For me it made sense with OEL and CHYCHRUN occupying the Left side already... essentially the move would be for something along the lines of Dahlin for Tkachuk, as far as draft position was concerned.
