Description
I'll be paraphrasing here, but as reported by Arpon Basu in the Athletic, Montembeault was recently asked about his current contract negotiations. He mentioned not having spoken to Kent Hughes directly, but that he knows his agent and the Habs GM are working on it. When asked what his priorities for his next contract were, he mentioned that "term" is what he's looking for, and that spending his entire career in MTL is what he wants.

Going as far back as 2020, all Goalies approaching their UFA years and having similar stats (ranging around .900 SV%), average roughly between $2.75mil to $3.75mil AAV. Using this, if Kent Hughes (or any GM if Habs decide to trade Montembeault) Want to sign Montembeault to a short-term contract (1-2 years). Expectations should be that the AAV will be upwards of $3.5mil AAV. Adding more years (3-4 year contract) will most likely bring the AAV under $3.5mil. and finally, a long-term contract (5+ years) should bring the AAV around or under $3mil AAV.
There is a huge caveat to all this however. The contracts I was using as a frame of reference were signed during a flat cap period... and we have yet to see "similar" goalie contracts going in with the assumption that the salary cap will be increasing. So please take that into consideration.

If I were Kent Hughes, seeing that Montembeault is already 27. I wouldn't sign him longer than 5 years (until age 32). and I also have no interest in in paying an AAV higher than $3.5mil. So, if an agreement on an extension happens, I see a realistic deal being a 3ish year contract, at an AAV somewhere around $3.25mil. And if a "homemtown discount" does exist, that the AAV falls just short of $3mil AAV.

The Montembeault scenario about staying with Montreal is like that in my opinion : 3,5M for 3-4 years.

I think he will ultimately end up being the one to go to Edmonton.

I dont think holland and co have the trust from ownership to spend the assets moving campbell would take.

Which means you are pretty limited to goalies who are making 1.5 million or less.

That essentially narrows the list down to monty, daccord(who might not be available) or a off the radar shot in the dark.

Unless monty wants to go long and cheap (5 years in the low to mid 2s) i think they wpuld seriously consider a trade

I hope not, my preference would be to move Allen, but it will come down to if Montembeault signs or not.

If he signs, either Allen or Primeau are gone. And Elliotte Friedman has just put in in latest 32thoughts podcast the MTL won't wait until the trade deadline to see if Montembeault signs or not.

I would take 5-7 years of Monty at 3 or less with some trade protection added on (maybe full NMC in the first 3 years and 5 or 10 team M-NTC for the later years. Monty has shown he can and will steal games, even with our weak defense, once our defense matures and gets stronger he will be a solid starter or 1A/B option on a contending team.

A 3 year deal signed at 24/25 y.o. is way different than a deal buying all free agency years.

Vanecek and Georgiev signed one year prior to hitting UFA status at 3x$3.4M. This should be the floor for Monthy who's a UFA.

No hometown discount here. Taxes, pressure and media needs are higher in MTL. For the same amount on the market, a player will mostly choose a more welcoming environnement. See:PLD.

Now that last comparable is a tricky one: Gustavsson at 3x$3.75M. On one side, both had a similar development curve. On the other, Filip was surfing on a contract year above expectation. But again, he's still a RFA...

In an open market where Korpisalo can get 5x$4M after years of misery in Columbus, does anybody doubt Monthy could get the same AAV on a shorter deal?

So IMO it will be a 3 years deal between $3.5M and $4M. The only way MTL lose is if they can't reach an agreement with him. A slight 500k overpayment would still be the right decision for a rebuilding team with a young defense needs steady goaltending to cover flaws and bring a positive environnement. See: Allen.
