It's a weird case where Huberdeau is somehow more valuable to the Flames than he is in a trade of any sort.
Retaining $4M for 8 years on a team that has the trajectory of a rebuilder at this point doesn't make any sense, especially when they have $30M projected in cap space this off season. Hanging onto Huberdeau and insulating him with players that work with his style should be how Calgary goes about this and hopefully they can reopen a competitive window within his contract. Jacob Pelletier was a catalyst for Huberdeau last season, he's been out all year and likely comes back after the all star break, making a move for a young enough guy in Duclair or signing him in the offseason could make sense as well. Lindholm and Huberdeau clearly don't fit, the most detrimental thing Calgary could do is sign Lindholm long term, big money and continue ramming a square peg in a round hole.
