Edmonton can’t afford to continue their bad start.

Ottawa (who’s going through it AGAIN) has shown in the past you can’t make the playoffs in October/ November.. but you sure can make yourself miss the playoffs.

The rest of the pacific division isn’t going to help out the Oilers either. Seattle and Calgary “should” balance out around .500

Anaheim is putting together some points, they may tail off, but they may not..

LA and VGK are the big dogs, and Vegas has basically put together a perfect October. Vancouver is also playing great and building forward like most of the Pacific.

The only help they’ll find inside their division is from San Jose and also maybe making a trade with San Jose.

    Détails additionnels:
Edmonton, plain and simple, must attached a first and a prospect to Campbell. For 20m dollars, in this cap era, you cannot win a cup with 5m AAV in a anchor goalie.

I haven’t chosen Xavier B so the pitchforks stay in the shed.

Next the oilers need depth help. Just as simple.
So I’ve chosen Barabanov. Now comes the extra value.
EDM in this trade has saved 1 million dollars (Campbell Petrov 1st *top 10 protected* for Kaapo, and adding Barabanov (value to come)). They’ve improved their goaltending and saved money, also adding Barabanov at 50% for depth. Now we add Benning to bolster EDM’s defensive depth.

EDM gains 250k in cap but improves their defence, forward depth, and goaltending *all key areas of weakness*. They lose a first and prospect for the benefit of losing Campbell.

For the 3 quality Sharks skaters I’ve iced an efficient and fair value. A 2nd and 3rd.

If EDM doesn’t show they’re trying to win now I mean I don’t see why Leon stays.

    1. Barabanov, Alexander (1 250 000 $ retained)
    2. Benning, Matthew
    3. Kähkönen, Kaapo
    Détails additionnels:
EDM can choose Blackwood or Kahkonen. Kaapo has very obviously improved (if you like watching bad hockey and watch the Sharks) from last year. I honestly think of both goalies hold their current level of play till TDL each alone could return over a 3rds + value, especially Blackwood.

Here I’ve chosen Kaapo - who EDM has no strings attached to (1 year and can negotiate their own deal).

    Détails additionnels:
If anything the Oilers need to add. I’d probably include a 2026 conditional 2nd if the oilers makes the WCF this year. Which downgrades to a 2025 4th if they dont.

Don't think Petrov would be included if we're talking four picks. But this seems the most logical destination for a Campbell dump.

That seems pretty steep. If I were Edmonton, I probably would target a goalie and keep Campbell for the year. More cap space is going to be available next year, so my assumption is the cost to dump will be cheaper.

This year, my assumption is it would be a 1st and a 3rd or the equivalent if I use Cal Petersen as the baseline. Helge Grans was probably worth a first round pick, but it wasn’t dollar for dollar because the Kings did retain some on Provorov.

To me, I think Edmonton should be exploring whether a team would be willing to take Campbell 50 percent retained for a lower price and include him in a deal for a goalie. Unfortunately, the teams that have goalies will probably not want him even then.

What would be the cost for San Jose to take Campbell at 4 years,$10m instead of 4 years,$20m?

I do think there is a deal feasible between San Jose, Edmonton, and Boston that would include a 50% retained Campbell or Skinner going to San Jose, Ullmark to Edmonton, Hertl to Boston. Obviously San Jose would be getting a load.

San Jose needs to be open and accepting of horrible contracts to acquire extra assets and Oilers will be desperate to move in from the Campbell mistake to aware upgrades as they are pretty much hitting win. Ow mode. (Draisaitl might be gone soon and Hyman and Kane with sooner than later start declining due to age).
Sharks are at best 3 years from being a legit playoff contender and could wait out Campbell and Vlasic bad deals as they would at least allow the sharks to reach cap floor in 24 & 25 but might be relegated to healthy scratches most nights.

100 percent agree with you. From my perspective, Campbell is overpaid by about $16m on his contract. $6m if they retain. San Jose is a while away from competing, but if you secure Celebrini and Will Smith is as advertised, maybe it comes quicker.

It kind of sucked being the 4th pick in a 3 player top heavy draft, but I think Will Smith is a very nice consolation prize

Smith will be an immediate impact in SJ but in 3 ish years he will be one of the top forwards in the league. His offensive creativity is more advanced than Carlsson and Fantilli. Carlsson had more size and sniping ability and Fantilli has a more advanced 200 ft game that said Smith isn’t tiny and his defensive game is far from bad.

Down the middle in 2 years they could be
    Smith
    Celebrini
    Bystedt
    Robins
With Couture and Hertl moving to the wings to make room for the next core or traded.
