Description
They did sell at the deadline by trading Orlov, Eller, and Hathaway. They can't really rebuild with Ovi. However they aren't actively making the moves that show they trying to get Ovi another Cup. Kuznetsov is still here. Honestly if healthy this team has a shot of making the playoffs. The Canes, Devils, and Rangers have established themselves as the Big 3 in the Metro. If healthy, the Caps should be on par with the Isles and Pens. The forward core is kinda weak, but the blueline is underrated and Kuemper wasn't bad last season. However can they stay healthy. Backstrom and Oshie will need to stay healthy if the Captials want to have a chance of making the playoffs. If Pacioretty can stay healthy, that would really help with goal scoring. Even if they make the playoffs, I don't see them making that much noise. Pacioretty is great if healthy, but I don't think they have enough offensively. At least with Pittsburgh they still have Sidney Crosby putting up point per game numbers and Jake Guentzel and Malkin also had around point per game numbers. In Washington Ovi was all by himself. Dylan Strome had a career year, but no other player came close to a point per game pace. At least they locked up Wilson long term. They don't really have anyone to sell except for Mantha and Kuznetsov. Maybe NAK or Nic Dowd?? The Caps could see another medicore season similar to last seaosn.

your description is fair except the part about the caps being on par with the pens lol

for the rest seems like a fair evaluation

I'd agree - if this team can stay healthy, they might be okay and able to sneak into the playoffs. But I just don't think the Caps can stay healthy.

That being said, I expect them to get a top 15 pick next year and in 2024-2025, I really do think the Caps make a last push to get a cup.

this feels like a punt year (though that's hard to justify with Ovi pushing 40). They might sneak into the playoffs but I expect them to make move next year, when they have more flexibility with the cap going up and Mantha expiring, as well as a better free agent class and it being easier to move guys like Kuzy, not to mention that one of Backstrom and Oshie may not return next year.

Though I wouldn't expect the offense to be nearly as bad as it was last year, with Carbery at the helm hopefully using forwards properly, unlike Laviolette who used people like Mantha as a defensive forward and antagonized/scapegoated players when they weren't the true problem. They'll also have a full year of Wilson and a hopefully recovered Backstrom (seeing him out in public again is hopefully a good sign), and likely won't have the same insanely bad injury luck they had last year, which should help to rejuvenate the offense. (also having a new PP coach that doesn't just rely on forcing the puck to Ovi should be helpful)
