Description
Seems the trade may be in jeopardy....which I'm hoping is the case, as I don't really like the idea. I have no idea who the prospect is that is supposedly part of the trade, so putting Heimo in that spot.

But assuming it's a go.....here is what it might mean

- Alarmist view: Canes aren't being successful resigning Pesce and bringing back DeAngelo is a cheap way of getting some quality....not as good as Pesce defensively certainly, but TD did play well his one year here. So Pesce will be traded

- Strategist view: The Canes are just looking for a bit more leverage when dealing with both Skjei and Pesce. They want to resign both, have good reason to believe both want to stay with the Canes, and just need a bit of a safety net as they try to get those extensions wrapped up. And if it seems one of those guys needs traded, Canes can ask for more since they have a backup plan in place.

- Optimistic view: DeAngelo is just a cheaper alternative to Gbere and can replace him on the 3rd pairing and help on the 2nd PP unit.

While I'd like to be an optimist, I think the strategist view is most likely.

Based on that, here is what I predict the Canes will do (which won't be correct, no one saw the Pacioretty and Burns moves last year....unless you are a liar....and I think Waddell will make one similar move for more scoring, but it will probably not be any of the obvious predictions so far)

So who would be most willing to overpay to get Pesce?
Who most desperate needs a steady veteran presence on the blue line? Who has money to spend? Who is poised and desperate to end a playoff drought.

Buffalo. I'd hate to see Pesce there, but it seems just too perfect. Given the crop of D men as UFA this year, I think a pretty substantial overpay is likely here.

I think someone else could come in late and match Buffalo's offer which is why I added the 2nd round pick as well.

I imagine there will be fellow Caniacs complaining that VO is a rental. I don't see that as a problem. Give him a year...he should be highly incentivized. If he is a disappointment, he can walk and Canes get almost $5m more to work with next year. If he's a fit sign him to an extension.

The real value is the picks, especially the 13th in this years draft. Canes can try to put a package together and move up...stay where they are and get a really quality prospect, or trade as a package for more scoring.

I'm going to go with the last one, and go outbid everyone for Clayton Keller. Arizona could stockpile talent with 2 more 1st round picks to go with the 2 they already have. As well as an additional 1 st round pick next year...and heck, throw in Drury for good measure.

If I need to throw in more picks, fine, I'd do it.

This leaves me over $6m (and unless Turbo really has a big year, I let him walk next year or trade him for picks, so really $11m) to start working on extensions for Aho, Skjei, Jarvis, Chatfield, and HJ.

Canes can also package the '24 2nd round picks to move into the first round if needed.

Canes get the top young scorer available, with term.

Olofsson and 13 OA is plenty of an offer for Pesce. Your trade is close to the return we got for Eichel.

One of your most mid prospects who probably will never touch NHL ice for DeAngelo please.

Very different situation, Buffalo would have gotten even more if Eichel had not been oft-injured, disgruntled, and already carrying a $10m AAV

Maybe I'd reconsider the 2nd round pick....but as I said in the notes, this reflects what I think will be a very competitive situation, and Oloffsson is already on his way out regardless so no real leverage there.

Without a strong defensive veteran presence....Sabres will miss the playoffs again. It's worth this price to end that drought and get your young guys the mentorship they need.
