The Leafs are up the creek ever since they ran out of prospects before filling up their NHL D, and signing Marleau was throwing away the paddle. They swung and missed on every other deal so 30 teams are just waiting for them to fall into the rapids and call for a rescue at any price

1) even assuming the cap is 81 mill, you are still over by 19 mill
2) matthews at 8 mill? hes gonna be at least 10 mill/yr
3) marner and nylander are gonna ask for more than 7 mill/yr
4) tavares is gonna ask for more than 9 mill/yr, especially as a free agent where he will be getting offers for well over 10 mill/yr

overall, youre not offering enough money to the top players
