I think the price for a team to retain $4m for the the next FOUR years would be much more expensive. There can't be many owners who would be ok with paying over $15m in actual dollars for a guy to play on another team. I mean this offer is barely more than MTL got to take on 1 year of Monahan.

Only way a 3rd team is coming in is if they are doing all the retention and something reasonable like 2.5m-3m, and they get the 2 1st for it. SJ would have to be fine with getting only partial return on Karlsson and just getting him off their books like Barrie+Bouchard. I don't think SJ goes for that.

Edit: Maybe it would be more fair if Chicago gets 1 piece, but it would have to be a young NHL player/prospect that they want.

In real dollars it ends up being under 9 million

Still, a single 1st isn't worth the opportunity cost, that's a retention slot gone for 4 years for what could be a very late 1st in a future draft.
