Description
2 things to say about the Ty Smith trade:

1.) I don’t want them to replace Severson with Marino. I like Marino but Severson is better and they need to resign him.
2.) the trade is a risk because Marino is a good edition but Smith is still very young and only had one off season he still has lots of potential and has a decent chance to breakout with Pittsburgh. It was a risk either way because they want to compete so if they kept him and he sucked not good but if they trade him And he’s great also not good.

I am not saying I don’t like this trade I think it is fine it will just be interesting to see if the risk works out.

There are still unknowns related to what prospects will make the team and if Tatar and Johnsson will be dumped. I would like both to be dumped but as long as Tatar is dumped I would be happy. Also, when it comes to defense I don’t see Smith as a 82-game player because he isn’t that good. He seems more like a 7th D to me. I would much rather a prospect like Okhotiuk take the spot. What else do you think they will do if anything? A bit upset about not signing Greer I really liked him at the end of the year but not a huge deal

Severson is definitely better than Marino, but there's no room for him in the long-term. He's going to want an expensive 5+ year extension, Marino's cap and years remaining fit Nemec's timeline a lot better.

I expect B. Smith's spot to be up for grabs with the Utica competition (mainly Okhotiuk and Bahl fighting for it) and Severson to get dealt at the deadline unless they're very competitive and can justify an own-rental, but that's unlikely.

I also expect Johnsson to get traded, Tatar to stick around for the Vet/Leadership aspect (and possibly for Nemec). Bastian and Mcleod probably won't be too comfortable either. Tyce has looked fantastic so far in the dev camp and guys like Foote and Dugan may also get some looks.

they should trade marino for garland, re-sign severson to a 4 year deal, bury Nemec in the AHL for a year and make him slide, then trade severson when nemec needs a new contract and put makkamadulin on the third pair.

Agree with all of your team explanation... Ty Smith decision understandable in the moment, but it leaves some concern in the pit of my stomach when I think 3-5 years from now. Smith could flatline or absolutely kill NJ for the next 10 years.

Will be interesting to see what they do with the forward group from here. Will be real competitive for the bottom 6. With a few young fellas out of options, something has to give or they could lose assets for free. Has to more trades on the horizon.

That final D pair and 7th D will also be interesting to watch ... Good competition in camp.

I suspect neither Severson or Marino are dealt (save for a crazy overpay), hard to see who plays third pair if one is dealt right now, one of the unproven plus Smith, I guess ... If Severson renegotiation is not to NJ liking, he goes at the deadline. I like Nemec in Utica as you suggest, he can come up for a cup of coffee at year end, if they think it makes sense. Hope they can get Mukhamadullin back asap (or ever)

If they keep Marino, best case scenario is Severson going at the TDL. Not sure what a cup contender will pay for Severson though, most cup contenders already have good right D so maybe a 1st rounder and a mid prospect or something. I think he might get a bigger return if he was traded this summer to a team in need of RD like Toronto. Canucks need RD but they probably won't be interested in Severson because he is a UFA
