Description
I did this trade in a Detroit AGM and just wanted to see what it looked like from a Calgary perspective.

I don't see many other solutions where Calgary can keep Gaudreau. I don't see Lucic or Coleman getting traded as their trade protection would block any possible move.

If Johnny would agree to this he could then sign an 8 year extension and gain one more year at a high AAV. With Lucic off the books after this next season and no one else significant to resign, should be pretty easy to get an extension done.

I feel like Kylington would be ok taking that salary on a short term to bank on himself getting paid more in the long run. I gave Mangiapane the Hyman deal, I think it's fair for him. I think Gudbranson would take a slight discount with some term as he had moved around the league a bunch.

The team trading doesn't have to be Detroit, I just picked Detroit as I'm a Detroit fan and would welcome this deal personally. I don't think any team would take on over 11M in salary for less than a first. The first round pick is top 10 protected.

This is never going to happen and Calgary certainly isn't paying a 1st to move Monahan

Im being realistic, why would Gaudreau ever agree to a 1 year deal? There's also no guarantee he gets traded right away. And if there was the league would likely step in for cap circumvention

I don't think it's cap circumvention although they might look at it. As to why gaudreau would agree to a one year deal is so he can get 9 years at around 10M instead of 8. Also it keeps this team together for at least two more years which means they have a better shot at a cup. If something like this were to happen, Calgary would sign Johnny to an extension right after getting him in the trade. The whole deal is based around Detroit, or any team for that matter, to eat 11M in cap space for the cost of one first round pick, which is a bargain, so that they can contend with tips roster for the next few years. Cause let's be real, this is the best flames team in a very long time.

You cant sign an extension right after a 1 year deal though. I understand this is very "outside the box" thinking but it just will never happen. The league would certainly step in, we barely got away with the Michael Stone buy out thing. They're already looking to find a way to deal with the LTIR in playoffs thing
