Description
Note: this was written before Chevy was extended and the coaching staff fired yesterday/today. That makes it less likely than it already was that any of this stuff will actually happen, but thought I'd still put out my thoughts on the offseason anyways.

Warning: I wrote full paragraphs for each trade so this post is very word heavy.

Détails additionnels:
This wouldn't need to be the exact package, but the idea would be they'd give up one of Broberg/Bouchard, one of Holloway/Bourgault, Kassian, Skinner, and the 1st. This is based off a couple acgms I've seen recently with the same package but Konovalov instead of Skinner. Swapping in the guy who's played in NHL games (and been solid) may be pushing it a bit, but Konovalov has little to no value to Winnipeg and ideally with Hellebuyck getting most of the starts Skinner wouldn't be needed. For Winnipeg, trading Hellebuyck would hurt, but would be huge towards really kickstarting the rebuild. He's been fantastic for us, but with his contract expiring in 2 years, we'll have to decide whether to pay him, trade him, or let him walk. The history of giving big money to goalies is not very pretty (see Ilya Bryzgalov, Carey Price), and letting him walk has us losing out on a ton of value from a potential trade. The Oilers have been in need of quality goaltending for a few years, and this should give them an elite player there, at least in the short term. In terms of the other pieces involved, Skinner and Comrie could form a quality tandem for the Jets, Broberg or Bouchard could fit nicely into our long term top 4, Holloway/Bourgault into our top 6, and the first rounder in a deep draft can add another quality piece for us. Taking on two years of Kassian is the price we have to pay to get a little extra on the return, and shouldn't hurt too much considering we'd be rebuilding. Overall, I think this is a move I think the Jets should make if it's available. Oilers fans, lmk on the value below.

Détails additionnels:
I've seen Wings fans on this site express interest in Schmidt, and considering our defense group could get crowded with prospects and new additions, he'd be a good candidate to move on from in a rebuild. The return isn't a super big concern for us, and I've seen at least one Wings fan say they'd do it for a 4th or 5th but not a 3rd, so a 4th it is.

  1. Scheifele, Mark
Détails additionnels:
For this trade to happen, the Flames would a) need to inspire enough confidence in the playoffs to convince Treliving to move another 1st+prospect and little enough for him to feel they need another guy down the middle, as well as Treliving having enough faith in Scheifele bouncing back to pull the trigger on this deal.
To be fair, if any coach could inspire Mark Scheifele's best effort on the defensive side of the puck, Daryll Sutter seems to be it, considering what he's done with the Flames this season. If Calgary feels that Sean Monahan is not good enough anymore to warrant another shot in the top 6, they might see Scheifele as a fit on the second line. Or maybe I'm just out of touch with the Flames.

From the Jets perspective, this may be seen as a poor return, but could look good for them if Monahan bounces back. Alternatively, they could take on Monahan as a cap casualty/dump and move Scheif in a separate deal, I'm just not sure what teams are interested at this point (Rangers possibly, but they do have Copp and Strome at least for now).

If Monahan plays well, he could be re-upped for the right price or flipped at the deadline. If not, we let him walk.

  1. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (WPG)
Détails additionnels:
I've seen this trade posted around here a bit and wouldn't mind seeing it happen. Stanley is a solid prospect who we (for better or worse) seem to have prioritized developing over some of our other prospects with less intimidating physical profiles (e.g. Heinola, Sammy Niku). Stanley is a solid defenseman who put up decent results on the third pair last year and mediocre numbers this season. Realistically though, it's unlikely he'd become anything better than a number 4 defenseman, with the most likely scenario being bottom pair. To me, that's not worth the effort of developing him when we have many other players to prioritize, especially in this scenario where we add Broberg. A 2nd round pick is about the best value we could get here, and maybe even a bit optimistic. A 3rd rounder would also work here. Otherwise, I'd keep Stanley as a young 7th defenseman that could earn more playing time with a good showing.

    Some more notes:
I'd like to move Wheeler for the right offer, but realistically he's staying until his contract runs up. Retaining salary wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but I think he'd be hesitant to move and the team would respect that. He can play on the middle six for now, being bumped to the 3rd line if/when a younger player proves to be better in the top 6.

Adam Lowry would be another player I'd be happy to move, but will realistically stay. He's fine as a 4C and you do need some vets, although I'd like to see Gustafsson eventually replace him. Kassian is also fine on the 4th line for a year or two and can be scratched if need be to make way for a prospect.

Brendan Dillon should be moved at the deadline for a good (a 1st would be ideal, but a 2nd would be good enough if none are offered). He can start out mentoring Broberg or another young dman on the bottom pairing and then be replaced with Heinola when traded. I'd consider moving Morrissey as well if the right offer came along (considering we're already moving half the team, what's one more, right?)
Lines: Connor, Dubois and Ehlers are the new core of this team and based on their results this year it seems wise to keep them together. The second line is less than ideal, with Perfetti being placed with a reclamation project and a declining Blake Wheeler, but I really liked my bottom six and didn't want to mess with it, so I'd just hope they'd be able to fully utilize their offensive talents and catch fire. If Perfetti struggles, him and Svech could be swapped.
My 3rd line of Svech-Barron-Appleton is my favourite of the 4 and besides the top line the one I could see being the most successful in their role. Barron has been solid with us so far, I've liked Svech in the games he's played and Appleton rounds out the line nicely. They're all in their early-mid 20s, which is young enough to make them potential mainstays long term. I really like this idea.
The 4th line is just two veterans and Vesalainen. Lowry unfortunately won't be moved anytime soon, as much as I'd like to see it, and Kassian is good enough to warrant a 4th line role. This is partly to fulfill our "veteran quota" since this is a younger team than we've put out in the past few years. If Vesalainen plays well, he could be moved up into the middle six, although I'd hesitate to break up the 3rd line if they were playing as well as I hope they would. In a perfect world he impresses enough that he bumps Monahan (or Wheeler) out of the top six in the long run. If he flops, Jansen Harkins can take his spot as he's more suited for a bottom six role than Vesa anyways.

Defensively, the top 4 stays the same and Broberg takes Schmidt's spot on the bottom pair. Dillon mentors him until he's moved at the deadline, and then ideally Heinola comes up as the replacement.
In net, Skinner and Comrie split the starts to begin the year and our new head coach is allowed to ride the hot hand. This would likely relegate Berdin to the AHL indefinitely unless one of our goalies flop.

Obviously, this would be a lot of major changes to undergo in a single offseason, and is probably a very extreme route to take (which makes it unlikely to happen since Chevy is our GM). However, I think this team needs some sort of major shakeup as we've been stuck in mediocrity for essentially the past 4 seasons. Becoming the new Minnesota Wild is not a success, and that's where I feel this team is currently heading. Hopefully whatever we do this offseason will at least leave a brighter outlook heading into next year.

That Hellebuyck trade is Habs fan level delusional. You can't seriously think he gets anywhere near that return.

Wings aren't interested in touching Schmidt's contract. They have plenty of their own young D on the way in the very near future

I feel like they would accept this if other better options can't be had. Not my first choice but we need left shot dmen right now.
