Description
IF Fleury was willing to waive his NMC for Edmonton, condition the 2nd pick, if they get to the West Finals and Fleury plays 50% of the games then the pick becomes another 1st... This way Chicago doesn't have to retain half and still get a 1st round pick for this year and possibly another next year.. See how Strome pans out with his old JR linemate, and Gustafsson can play with Ceci in the bottom pairing and roll in and out of the lineup pending the opponent..
In my honest opinion, I can not for the life of me understand why Derek Ryan was signed, Riley Nash(very similar player) was signed to a league min deal in Winnipeg before being picked up off waivers, how could Derek Ryan covet 2 years at $1.25m per year, it feels like it was 1 year too many and about $500k too much.. Similar is Ceci, Demelo is a much better defensive player than he is, and his cap hit is $3m, so in a way Ceci is getting at least $250k more per year to be a weaker defensive version of Demelo.. So, in reality, b/w these 2 players, the Oilers are paying $750k more than they should be.. Plus the mismanagement of buying Neal out and having dead money for another 4 years- see Sekera, is getting very tiresome.. I also ponder, who else was going to offer Hyman anything more than 5 years at even $5m per year, not saying I haven't enjoyed him as an Oiler, just curious is Holland overpaid yet another player for no particular reason..

In my opinion, this is a very well-conceived trade, and I almost always dislike multi-player deals including more than four guys. It's hard to see how Edmonton, in particular, could decline this.

Very well done!

The trade overall looks fair however the only play in the deal the oilers actually need is fluery... An up grade in net would be great.
Strome cant even stick in the line up on a weak CHI team but is going to play 1st line with mcdavid.... and solve our problems....
Gustafsson is another barrie just not as productive as barrie so no need. Russell or koekkoek would be better options.

Bottom 6 fwds you can nit pick the signing and years but if 2 players are over paid by under a mill combined thats not bad at all.

as for overpaying in general its EDM any GM who comes here will have to overpay in $ or Years or NMC to attract free agents to come to EDM that's just the reality of being the most northern team in cold weather who has stuggled to win... just the reality of it.

The beauty about Strome, he has played with McDavid before, so he could fit with him on the first line, or should Tipp wanna load up 29/97 he can slide to Line 2 with Nuge and Hyman, and that is what I would feel much more comfortable and confident with than Yamamoto TBH.. Worst case scenario play him 3rd line C and have Foegele or McLeod jump up in the top 6 OR Benson should he figure it out offensively in the show finally.. My point is there are more options with Strome, than there is with Yamamoto, plus Strome is a streaky player, maybe the change of scenery will help him out one more time.. As for Gustafsson, yeah agreed, think Koekkoek/Russell/Broberg/Lagesson would be better options defensively, just didn't think the Hawks would add deHaan with half his salary retained too..

Kind of missed the point on the years and $$, yes, I understand Edmonton is not in a position of strength, neither is Winnipeg, yet they still swoop in- my examples of Nash for league min who is a very similar player to Ryan, would save $500k for a team up against the cap, would go a long way, and Ceci comparable to Demelo for $250k, plus Hyman for likely 2 years too many and I would say min $500k too much, it all adds up, don't you think an additional $1.25m in cap space could've been used in better ways for something a bit more needed, like a goalie.. Hypothetically, they sign those 3 to the deals I mentioned- Ryan-$750, Ceci-$3m, and Hyman-$5m, combined that with even a Koskinen Buyout would've given the Oilers $4.25m in cap space to bring in another goalie, OR take it one step further, don't re-sign Smith and that cap hit turns into $6.45m, you don't think the Oilers would've had a better chance at signing somebody like Ullmark for say $5.5m for the same 5 years Boston offered him, and bring up Skinner to be what Swayman is in Boston? And should things not work out with Skinner, you go to the deadline and acquire a solid backup jic Ullmark goes down... Basically I as an Oiler fan, am fed up with the gross cap mismanagement and asset management that tends to happen with this organization, and I am tired of the well we're Edmonton, it's what we have to do argument, cause I see a completely different philosophy here in Winnipeg, plus Edmonton has the 2 BEST players in the world playing for them, how would that not be attractive for Free Agents to come play with them, get their cookies and sign big tickets elsewhere... It's just exhausting..

Would be a pretty good trade for Edmonton and yeah if you could swing a 50% retained Da Haan instead of Gustafsson that'd be so much better for the Oilers.

I dont see Strome as the fix at all. I agree Yamo is not the fit they need in the top 6 and would be better as a 3RW. Which means they should be looking for a top 6 RW/ Ideally someone with a bit of edge or physicality to them. Thats a hope as I dont see that player available anywhere yet...

As for the contracts I get what your saying yes Winnipeg has some of the same challenges as far as location goes. However what they do have going for them is some recent playoff success which goes along way to in contract negotiation as they can see your team is in the fight. EDM has had essentially 0 Playoff success since 2006.... thats a hard sell to free agents even with 2 of the top players.

As for Nash not a great comparison as he was lost to waivers and couldnt stick with the team got pick up by an injury riddled team and will be dumped when healthy.

Yes we could have gone that road with getting another starting goalie but if we signed that we would be looking for a # 2RD a 3rd or 4th Line C ( depending on your view on Mcloed) Gambling on skinner as a back up who had played 1 NHL to that point hyman would have stayed in TOR for that Price as it was offered so a 1# LW as well.

That would create far more holes.
