Description
A couple disclaimers before getting angry in the comment section:

-I know next to nothing about the Oilers.
-I know relatively little about the prospects going from Ottawa to Edmonton other than what I read on this website
-This is mostly for fun and for general feedback, not interested in getting in arguments over why it will never happen (because it almost certainly won’t)

Let’s say Edmonton misses the playoffs or is out in the first round again. Something would need to change, and management/ownership gets tired of trying to smash the same square peg into the proverbial circular hole with the current roster construction. Moving on from Draisaitl would create an immense amount of cap space and they get a ransom of young players/draft capital in return, so they can build a more balanced and sustainable roster. Ottawa is one of the only teams who have the cap space and (theoretically) the prospects to at least start a conversation. Getting a young replacement 2C with a high ceiling, one of the better D prospects in the league, and a top 5 draft pick is at least stomachable for trading one of the best players in the league. The remaining cap space allows them to get a real goaltender and fill out the bottom 6 better than I can.

From Ottawa’s perspective this would be an all-in move I doubt they would make because they have yet to have much success, but with a deep prospect pool of players knocking on the door I can at least envision a scenario in which they entertain the idea. Plus they can sell the crap out of the “German connection” with Drai and Stützle.

Once again, not posting this to start arguments I mostly just wanted to see it on paper. If you have productive feedback I welcome it.

Interesting proposal. As an Edmonton fan, my first thoughts are it’s not enough from Ottawa. We’d need an elite RHD coming back, at the very least, instead of a first round pick. I’d also insist on Connor Brown - he’s a solid middle six winger with a history with McDavid.

Draisaitl's signing bonus money for 2022-2023 is 7 million.

Which team should pay it, in your opinion?

I “drafted” Nemic in this situation who’s supposed to be the best RHD in the draft, so that could cover the elite RHD part depending on how the oilers think of him as a prospect. I suppose instead of the 2023 1st you could talk Ottawa into giving away one of their RHD prospects but obviously they don’t have any current elite players to give at that position.

I don’t think you’ll ever be able to get a “fair” return for Drai, which is why deals like this are never made. But the team will become more balanced and you’ll be able to add elsewhere which is why I thought it was interesting to look at.

I’d say Ottawa. If they’re going to get a top 3 nhl player they should pay for him. Would depend on the timing of the trade though. I think there are a million other obstacles in the way that come to the forefront before that becomes a problem though
