Description
I'm a habs fan, but wanted to show the trade from Pittsburgh's perspective.

The thought process is DeSmith still hasn't won a game and isn't providing value. Jarry has been great this year although management seemed to lose confidence in him after playoffs last year. Allen faced 50 shots vs Pittsburgh the other night and came away with the win, perhaps Pittsburgh would be interested in adding Allen to compliment Jarry / add depth.

MTL really has no need to trade Allen, the ask would be a 2nd minimum IMO. Legare isn't much off an add but he could be a piece in Laval. There would be no need for DeSmith with Allen so he is included for cap reasons and a body for MTL. Paquette offsets the financial burden of taking on DeSmith for MTL while also giving PIT some more depth - his value is essentially nothing.

pens decline. goalies don't have that type of value. allen won't get a 2nd + prospect.

Jake Allen has posted below league average numbers in 3 out of the past 4 seasons (4 out of 5 if you include this year), whereas DeSmith has been posted above league average numbers in all 3 of his seasons, aside from the 4 game sample size so far this year.

Giving up a 2nd and prospect to make what is a fairly lateral move seems like pretty poor asset management.

In 4 games this year DeSmith has a -5.33 GSAx. In other words he has given up an average of 1.33 more goals than expected per game this season... that's dreadful.

Conversely, Allen has a GSAx of -2.51 in 18 games that's an average of 0.139 ... essentially average (with a way heavier workload and plays on a bad team).

I think you're off on your assessment... imagine if Jarry got hurt and you had to run with DeSmith.

To put things in perspective did you watch the last habs - pens game? Allen faced 50 shots and DeSmith only faced 31... but the habs won 6-3. That's the difference between these two goalies.

P.S. Legare is nothing special he would be a piece for Laval... I know Pittsburgh has no prospects but let's not act like Legare has an impact on this trade. It is essentially Allen for a 2nd.

It's extremely hilarious to me when people feel like they've been personally slighted when they see a large sample size of numbers put in front of them that disagrees with the narrative that they're trying to run with. No need to call anyone names, but go off if you feel the need shakes head

17/18: St Louis=missed playoffs by 3 pts=below league average numbers for Allen, which is hilarious considering the team finished 6th OA in goals against.
18/19: St Louis=Stanley Cup Champs=Below league average numbers for Allen, again hilarious considering the team finished 6th OA in goals against.
19/20: St Louis=Best in the Central=Above league average numbers for Allen, and again, they finished 6th OA in goals against.
20/21: Montreal=Wildcard team=Below league average numbers for Allen, Habs finished in the middle of the pack in goals against.
