Description
These are all the active players the Oilers would have if they didn't trade draft picks. I went through and found the most significant players selected with picks they had traded away. Just for the fun of it, I also added players they traded away FOR picks. Let me know if I missed someone.

Are there any good draft picks they have with picks they acquired? As a Wild fan, it sucks knowing Tampa picked Point with the pick they traded up with the Wild to get, but then again the pick they took Kaprizov with was Boston's originally.

Keep in mind Marino was traded as he refused to sign here, some guys force the hand as they can just wait it out and walk away for nothing. Adam Fox was traded from Calgary to Carolina to New York before he made the NHL because he wanted to play in the NE USA.

I believe there was some sort of dispute with Riley Nash as well which is why we flipped him for Marincin.

Not sure if Jeff Petry really belongs on the list. He was a hell of an up and comer but he was thrown to the fire too fast and fans turned on him, toxic situation and no way he was staying long term. Did the same thing to Justin Schultz a few years later.

Personally I would've taken Wallstedt but I guess we will need to wait a while to see who wins that one.

That Barzal trade just gets worse by the year though.

It was like 12 years ago but one of the worst "picks" trade in my memory is Brodziak in his prime and a 6th that became Kuemper for a 4th and 5th that never played an NHL game.

There are background to why a couple of these trades happened, I just wanted to see what the team would look like if they hadn't traded those picks. Of course they probably wouldn't have gotten other good players like McDavid, but still interesting to see.

Carter Savoie stands out. Hasn't played in the pro leagues yet, but he stands out as an underrated prospect. 19 years old and he put up 20 points in 24 games in his first season with UofDenver. Been lighting it up for years too. In the 2020 draft, Sharks traded up for Edmonton's 3rd round 76th overall pick. Edmonton got 100th and 126th back and picked savoie with the 100th.

They also drafted Stuart Skinner when they traded up in the 2017 3rd round, and didn't lose anything with the picks they gave away.

In the Barzal trade, they acquired the picks for Caleb Jones and Jonas Siegenthaler. Neither are with the team anymore though, and it looks like it resulted in Edmonton getting Duncan Keith. Take it however you want.

So it's safe to say that they lost out on much more than they got back.
