Description
Okay, I am done watching a hockey team that continues to think its 2013 by playing Duncan Keith 23 minutes a night, this guy cannot be a top 4 defenseman on a team that fancies itself a future contender. My solution is my new favorite prospect in the 2021 NHL Draft, Carson Lambos. This draft is such a damn crapshoot that I think an elite player like Lambos, who is ranked anywhere from 2-28 is projections can be a sleeper for a team right after the lottery. I've gotten to watch some of his play and I'm sold. His positioning in all 3 zones is elite. He has the ability to keep the puck on his stick like the best of them and he can move the puck well too. His best asset is his defensive instincts and mature physicality beyond his years. He also puts up points in leagues, he's always a team leader in +/- (which I think is the best way to use that stat, relative to team performance and the +/- of his teammates) and he dominated as a 17/18 year old this year when he played 13 games in Finland's U20 league. . The Hawks are currently projected to get the 17th pick as the lowest ranked playoff team (since there are now 16 lottery teams because Seattle) and that is actually exactly where he is ranked in Bob McKenzie's rankings. Do I think the Hawks might have to trade up to get him? Yes, but I think hes worth it because of one thing. He provides something that no other defenseman in this organization has. Speed, skill and smart defensive ability. Play this guy next to Adam Boqvist and I think you have the potential pair to grow into a top 5 defensive pairing in team history. The offensive skill on the right side combined with the reliable defenseman on the left. I think that pairing could be the #1 pairing in the organization for the next 10-15 years like Keith and Seabrook were beforehand. Is he NHL ready? I'm not sure, but I wanted to show how it could look with all of our other players if this selection happened like I hope it does. I am gonna model a trade up scenario into the top 10 involving a team that needs a middle 6 center. Dylan Strome to the Anaheim Ducks in a first round trade up to select Lambos. Strome can fill the same role Danault has in Montreal for the last few years as de facto #1 center while the youngest pieces grow into bigger roles. Does a rebuilding team like trading down? Probably not. But if it includes an extra second and a player who could be a #2 center of the now and future plus only moving down around 12 picks in an even draft, I think they consider it even if extra sweetners are needed.

Strome is instantly a top 6 center on a core that needs it and could possibly develop nice chemistry alongside Zegras and Comtois. Hawks move into top 5 to select Lambos. Ducks fans probably want more to move down in the draft, but I think this framework is a good start.

Boston loves their physicality, especially on the blue line. They also have a very weak left side on D, its not awful, just very young and inexperienced. A 3rd and a meh prospect seems like fair value for Zadorov, who will be an RFA and after a decent season will probably want a contract in the 3.5 range. If you think Senyshyn is too much, I'll take JFK and a 3rd too.

ANA passes and CHI passes on the BOS trade. Not worth Zadorov. Janmark is a decent deal if Vegas can make the cap work.

Agreed that I'd be very happy with Lambos.

I don't think that we'd trade down if we have a pick in the top 6; there are too many highly-regarded prospects that would fill one of our various needs in that range. I can see us trading back if none of our top half-dozen choices were still available where we finally end up, but remember we got Trevor Zegras at #9, so it's hard to say.

I'm surprised that McKenzie has him rated at #17; most of the lists I've seen have Lambos as one of the top 10 in this draft, and anyway, McKenzie's opinion may change by draft day.

When was the last time a top 5/6 pick was traded knowing of the pick? Why wouldn’t Anaheim want to grab a LD to pair with Drysdale for the foreseeable future? I just don’t see a team dropping that far for Dylan Strome.

It’s not McKenzie’s opinion as he polls various professional scouts to create an aggregated list. It definitely will change as a decent amount of hockey has been played since his last poll (December 15th).

There are a ton of highly regarded prospects this year, but they're all over the place. If the Ducks want to trade down because of that factor, I think they would be willing to take the risk that a player they could get at 17 would only be slightly worse than what they could draft around 4-6. Assuming they dont win a top 2 pick in the draft lottery. They also improve their draft capital on top of getting a young player who can be a top 6 forward on a rebuilding team with massive troubles scoring.

I absolutely think that Lambos alongside Drysdale would be just as good a fit as Lambos alongside Boqvist, and its certainly possible that the ducks would want the hawks 1st in 2022 instead of the second, which they might be willing to do, but again, the draft rankings this year are all over the place and Anaheim has one of the worst offenses in the NHL. I can see them being willing to move down in an even draft if it means acquiring a center of the now and more draft capital. If you have any prospects Anaheim would want alongside Strome off the Chicago roster, I'm willing to hear it
