Description
As what used to be the case every year before the salary cap era, the New York Rangers landed the top UFA (Panarin) and even went out and got one of the top RFA's (Trouba). Now they will look to build quickly around these two pieces, plus recent top draft choice Kakko to try to sneak into the playoffs in the ultra competitive Metro division as soon as next season. This offseason, they will need to sign their two remaining RFA's, but as neither have arbitration rights they should be able to get them locked up to fair to team friendly deals soon. I think they will bring the young players along slowly and ensure there's a veteran on a line with them when they do play on the big club. The Rangers will probably be sellers at this year's deadline, but they should be well positioned going into next season.

RFA's
Lemieux - signs a 2 x $1M bridge deal to work his way up from the fourth line.
DeAngelo - signs a 1 x $2.25M deal as he has no arbitration rights currently. Next year he can file for arbitration and he still makes nearly four times his QO for this season so I think he'd sign this rather than hold out.

UFA's
Sign a veteran D to a 1 x 700k deal (Schlemko, Morrow) to compete with the young players for playing time / to be the designated #7D.

After Camp
Smith & Beleskey can mentor the young players in the AHL as the NHL game has passed them by. I think Kratsov & Andersson don't quite make the team (Howden & Chytil do). These top picks go to the AHL team to play more minutes and put up good numbers and then are brought up when trades are made to open up room for them closer to Christmas / the trade deadline. Rangers squeeze just under the cap with their final 22 man roster ($12.7k under) rather than trade Namestnikov or Strome for pennies on the dollar in the off season. They can send all waiver exempt guys down on paper on off days to build cap space to limit bonus carry over into next season.

Kreider - Zibanejad - Kakko
Panarin - Chytil - Buchnevich
Namestnikov - Howden - Strome
Lemieux - McKegg - Fast
x- Nieves

Skjei - Trouba
Rykov - DeAngelo
Staal - Fox
x- league min UFA

Lundqvist
Georgiev

As the Season Progresses
As the young players prove themselves down in the AHL, I think New York looks to move Namestnikov near the Xmas break (likely just after the trade freeze comes off) unless they are firmly in the playoff picture.
Again, assuming the Rangers are losing ground in the playoff chase close to the deadline, Fast could be moved to a contender looking for a bottom 6 right handed forward for added depth and perhaps even re-sign with the Rangers as a UFA.
If contract talks are not going well and the Rangers don't feel they can get Kreider extended in the $5.5M - $6.5M AAV range then they will move what will be one of the most sought after pieces at the deadline.

  1. Namestnikov, Vladislav (2 000 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
San Jose's young players are struggling to maintain consistency filling the void left by the Nyquist and Donskoi departures, so the Sharks obtain a good middle six option for a low cap hit shortly after the Xmas break. He can also provide mentorship to some of the young Russian prospects they may have up on the big club.

  1. Kamenev, Vladislav
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2020 (TOR)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2021 (COL)
Détails additionnels:
Kamanev's growth has been derailed by injuries, and I think the Avs look to Bowers to pass him on the depth chart as soon as this year, making him expendable to push their chips in this season and make a playoff run.

New York acquires a Russian player they hope can get back on track in the Big Apple and a pair of picks. Return for NYR is comparable to the Dzingel trade from last season, but I assumed they'd get a bit less given Sakic's history as a GM that doesn't pay too much for rentals.

2021 2nd moves to be a 2021 1st if Colorado re-signs Kreider or the Avs make the WCF.
COL
  1. Kreider, Chris
Détails additionnels:
Burakovsky/Donskoi/Jost are inconsistent in a top 6 role for the first half of the year, so Colorado adds a proven top 6 forward near the deadline by acquiring Kreider.

Détails additionnels:
Flames spend a pair of pick to acquire Fast at half price hoping to have a long playoff run. Gives them a good RHS utility guy for their bottom six to add to their growing collection of Swedish players.

2021 3rd is conditional on the Flames winning one round in the playoffs or re-signing Fast, else it's the 2021 4th.
CGY
  1. Fast, Jesper (925 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
New York sells off Fast near the deadline to gain more picks to add to their rebuild. I expect the Rangers would try to re-sign Fast to a reasonable extension for 2-3 years at the end of the year, but could also see him staying on the Flames for a similar term due to them being further along in their build than the Rangers and having quite a few fellow Swedes.

Out of the trades, I agree that Fast is least likely. They probably should keep him for a few more years in their bottom six even.

I put Kravtsov in the AHL to start as I expect they'd rather have him playing big minutes down there than on the fourth line in New York. I don't think he's really competing with McKegg, as McKegg is a better option for the fourth line and Kravstov is top 9 NHL or top line AHL for me. I could however see Kravtsov pushing Howden down that initial training camp lineup.
Namestnikov - Strome - Kravstov
Lemieux - Howden - Fast
x- McKegg/Nieves and the other one waived to the AHL due to cap constraints

He's meh at $4M, but I think at $2M to support the Sharks young players he'd be worth the third + 5th at least (maybe remove the conditional upgrade) in a season where they really need to get their cup (Labanc is making way more than $1M next year). He's a 26 year old 30 - 40 point established middle six guy. Prices at the deadline are also always more than the offseason. I mean Brassard got a 3rd last deadline and he was playing awfully.

Fair enough, I just think with the cap crunch throughout the league that that kinda money can be spent on better quality players
