Description
It's been now three different sites where I see the Ehlers to MTL rumors. I've been skeptical at first, but if it is serious, what would the Jets ask for him ?
I don't see the guys give one of their top prospects (KK, Poehling, Suzuki, and probably Romanov). I don't think they would put their 1st rnd pick of this year in play too. But I could see one of their 2nd in the mix. What else ?

60 point per year top line winger that is cost controlled at $6M... a higher end prospect and/or a 1st should be the ask. If not keeping him at that cost controlled $6M is worth more then a sub par package. That's just my opinion

Any Ehlers trade involves at least one high end piece but MTL may be able to get him cheaper by taking on a cap dump, Winnipeg has RFAs to sign and will need some relief.

I understand this, but he had a down year with 37 pts in 62 games, and the Jets are tight on the cap with Laine and Connor to re-sign, and Roslovic next year. He clearly has value, but he is not worth a top prospect considering these two factors IMO.

He had a down year with injury, but at 82 games would have scored over 50 points. There are other assets in Perreault and Little that should be traded before considering Ehlers for trade to move out cap. Further to that point, if Trouba is moved and there's less cap returning than the $7M - $8M that he would command the Jets would have no issues retaining Ehlers. So unless a package that includes a 1st Round Pick and a higher end prospect is offered and is more beneficial than keeping him why trade him,

If that's the case, do you know what happens next? Chevy trades him to another team. There is always demand for good players. If YOU think he is only worth those two and a couple picks, he starts talking to another team. Simple as that.

We have this idea that teams with cap are doing the other teams a favor or something. Uuughh no, not that much. Remember you want that player also and so do other teams. Just because WPG needs to make some cap space doesn't mean now that player is only half of what he's actually worth. Down season or not, he is still valuable. That's why you want him and want to put him on your top line with Domi and Drouin. WPG knows that also.

Players have down years all the time. Its when it happens more than one time in a row that you can start pointing to it as an example of why their value is down. Even then, so many circumstances can impede a player from putting numbers he is capable of. Injuries play a big part of that and Ehlers was injured this year and for a significant amount of time too.
