Calgary doesn't need a superstar forward to make a deep playoff run, they've already got arguably a top-3 1st line in hockey. They need scoring depth at forward, a 1a/1b option at tendy to tandem with Rittich, and maybe a d-man with playoff experience.

I am not sure if CGY is paying Detroit enough to dump the Frolik contract on them. For most teams, I don't think its really THAT bad, but for a competing CGY team, it is going to really put a damper on their summer re-signings if they don't move it. If CGY is able to get Nyquist to resign after the season, this would be a bomb deal for them. Even if they don't, Nyquist is a solid rental and upgrade for them at forward.

On the back end, the flames have 40 COMBINED playoff games among their D-men. That is why the Edler trade works. They need playoff experience and depth to make a run. Bennett needs a new start and his role really isn't needed with Nyquist coming in. They might have to pay another draft pick for Edler, but I think it'd be worth it. It doesn't look like Edler will be out much longer.

Panik would solidify CGY's 3rd line and its basically a future vs now move. Mangiapane will be a solid scoring option at wing in the future, and maybe has 2nd powerplay potential, but he's not quite there yet.

Kinkaid hasn't had a great season, but he does not look nearly as bad as Smith does. It would benefit CGY to get Kinkaid in and solidify that back up position.
