Kane doesn't drive offense like he once did, but this year he's got no one to work with. On a good team, his offensive numbers should return.

Didn't Chicago just get a 2nd for about a $2.5M cap dump for Dickinson. Now they're giving up a fourth in a deal to to acquire a guy on $6M AAV?

I would think the Blackhawks would happily take Reilly and Smith if it meant throwing in another draft pick or two. A 3rd round pick is probably sufficient to AZ for retention on Kane.

Friedman actually specified that this was not the "asking price" but what other GMs told him they thought was Toews value.

My attempt at Provorov and Toews
You got the Friedman quote exactly wrong. He clarified on 32 Thoughts that he heard from other GMs that they thought the going price for Toews would be a 2nd or a 3rd, and he made clear that this was not the asking price, but what other GMs thought it would be. I'm sure the asking price is a 1st and then they go from there . . . I can see a trade similar to the Mrazek deal . . Toews plus the Hawks 2nd (likely 33 to 36) overall for a First (likely 20-32 overall, depending on the team). And maybe the Hawks are protected, so if that first winds up,say, 28 or later, they get a 2nd or 3rd.

I don't think it's that. Crossing borders during pandemics is a thing. Jones' mom is pretty right-wing and I think anti-vaxx . . not sure how much Seth shares those views (his historic Twitter feed suggests he does, at least in part), so he may have issues with what is perceived to be more governmental control. Plus, I don't think a player has to be conservative to be worried about the economic effects of location -- higher taxes and a weak looney could inform his view, too. Plus, maybe he hates hockey? Why go to Canada if you hate hockey?
Anyway, I love Sloan and the Kids in the Hall, so I'd love to go play in Canada.

I don't think you're paying attention to what Davidson is doing . . . next year, Nolan Allan and Del Mastro (and maybe Kaiser) will all be needing pro contracts, i.e., Rockford Bound. So several of the current Rockford D will be with the big club or out of the Org. They won't be signing more veterans . . . some combo of Regula, Vlasic, Galvas, Roos, Phillips, Mitchell will be with the big club.
Korchinski is a problem. He looks like he needs more development, but he may have done all he could in juniors . . . and he can't go to Rockford. Long shot to make the Hawks, given Davidson's timeline and statements about letting prospects cook, though. Maybe Europe?

Seth Jones Options if Possible
That contract termination BS is just that . . . BS. You can't do that.
No way do the Hawks keep salary for 8 years! That's really the only reason to trade him -- Davidson would probably prefer not to be weighed down by that salary when the team is competing, he needs to give raises and sign FAs and Jones is on the downside of that deal.
The only way a Jones trade will work is if the Blackhawks take a similarly sized (AAV) bad deal in return. And you need a desperate GM who is willing to throw all his eggs in for a roster currently in the window. If Jones can seriously get you a Cup, you wouldn't feel so bad about overpaying him on the downside when you're likely rebuilding.
But shopping around for a bad contract is more of how we work on armchair GM than how real GMs work. Also, to the extent the trading team is taking on salary . . . forget about any kind of decent return.

Trade for playoff run
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gmgb</b></div><div> I don't think the protection on the 1st matters much, as anyone picking up Kane at the deadline would have to be a stronger contender than NSH is this season. The team acquiring him isn't going to be potentially drafting in the top ten anyway.</div></div>
But it does matter because it's not just anyone picking up Kane: the proposal is for Nashville to pick up Kane, and they are currently in position to draft 12th. You can calculate the strength of the pick in to the trade deal (it'll be perceived as much better than, say, the BOS #1 pick), but Davidson's not making this deal without a 2023 First so protection for the pick is not realistic.

Davidson is more interested in picks than random prospects. He is probably asking (and getting) 2 first-rounders for Kane. If he acquires a prospect, his mantra has been speed + compete level . . . any prospect going for Kane has to have those.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>Agree 100% the Hawks will try to accommodate Kaners requested destination. But only if they get a decent package. That starts with a 2023 1st, not a 2024. Brandon Carlo is a fine player, but w/ Jones and Murphy already on the right side for the next 3 seasons after this, Carlo isn't a need. Hawks need to fill needs. Deal will need a high end F prospect like Lysall included, especially if Bruins want to include the Smith contract as well.</div></div>
the Hawks' only need right now is for high draft picks. You're right -- a 2023 first is the starting ask for any Kane trade. With NYR and their 2 firsts lurking, there's no way you get Kane without that. But Davidson is also not going to avoid picking up a good prospect because he's got Murphy on the current roster! Murphy may be traded this year, too, if someone is willing to take a good D with a bad back for 3 years . . .

Theres No way to get Kane on this team
Let's simplify . . . Davidson has been asking for draft picks above prospects, and Elliot Friedman keeps insisting any Kane trade is likely to involve a 3rd team.
If there's a third team involved, Kane's hit goes down to $2.6; Assuming he takes the roster space of a league-minimum player, there's only an additional $1.8M or so to clear.
Kane for Bos 2023 and 2024 firsts. You can throw in a salary -- not sure who's most expendable. If it's a big salary, maybe there's a 2nd-tier prospect heading West, too.
Then, AZ or ANH or whoever gets a prospect or two to eat $2.6 in cap space (but only about half that in actual dollars).

Kane is definitely a rental . . . maybe there's some circumstance where he agrees to be traded to, say, the Rangers, and then they get into a lot of discussion about long-term. But that's a long shot. I think he is traded as a rental. AND he's a pretty valuable one at that. So, yeah, the Giroux trade is a decent comp. One thing about the return: Davidson has been focused on obtaining draft capital in all these deals, and with the quality of the 2023 draft, that will be no different. I think he is much more likely to ask for 2 firsts for Kane. The Rangers would be the front-runners, since they actually have 2 in this draft.

If Chicago's eating $2.5 per year for FOUR years, they would need a lot more. It's rare for a team to eat that much cap for that long, especially if they are just acting as the broker.

We can get Kane now
Here's what Davidson's been emphasizing in his trades: draft picks, players with speed, players with "high compete." I looked up the Rangers prospects and none of them look to have the speed; Kravtsov, in particular, is called out by Core Pronman at the Athletic as having "below average" compete.
The Rangers are particularly appealing as a trade partner because they have two first-round picks in a great draft year. Unfortunately, they are both going to be late picks . . . maybe even #31 and #32. So I think it's much more likely that Davidson asks for both those 2023 first rounders plus a sweetener. At the very least, he might take a 2023 first (whichever is higher), a 2024 first, and something else. And he's not giving up draft picks to make it all work.

Exactly. Two late firsts and a second might be about what they settle for in a trade for Kane. But Toews is having such a great year, why would Davidson want to give up 3 of his own picks to move him? He's been more likely to trade for picks than prospects, too. I don't know all these TOR prospects, but unless they fit the mode of speedy-fast-guy with high compete, Davidson doesn't want them. He'd rather have more picks.

It's hard to say Chicago will hold out for a 1st round pick for Domi, but they are in no rush to move him this early if they can get something more later. I just don't think a late 2nd round pick moves the needle at this point of the season.

better drafting and asset managment
I'll pick one nit here . . . . you make a good point about asset management and better decision-making. But I think the organization we're left with, even in this revised history, is still an unfocused mess. Not your fault! But you mention "there's no need to rebuild with better management." I don't know . . .
I like where the future of the defense is heading, but at forward, not so much. That center depth looks awful. (I think there are reasons no one was willing to trade for Strome), and then, in terms of the future, are we looking at Reichel and Sillinger as the centers to build around? I guess? Not convinced that Reichel is a center yet or that Sillinger is going to be someone you write in to the top of the line-up. I think I'd rather have Nazar, but that's a lot of uncertainty either way, so this looks like a recipe for more years of on-the-playoff-bubble hockey.
Meanwhile, it leaves the prospect pool in worse shape than it is now. And that's a big deal whether this team is supposed to win this year, or next, or in 2 years. You need those guys to give you high value at league minimum deals, to trade for the big holes that will need to be filled, and to maybe fill the holes themselves. I look at this and think, what if Bowman . . . or someone else . . . what if YOU started that rebuild that Bowman claimed they were starting in 2019 and kept at it. This would be a nice step on the way to a rebuild, but if it its an argument against the rebuild, then I guess we will live with another 6 or 7 years of middle-of-the-road hockey.

what i would pay
Based on Davidson's moves so far, I think he'd be aiming for draft picks rather than prospects and young players. And like the commenter said above, it would start with the 2023 First. Teams looking to make big additions this year are not going to be able to hold the line because it's a historically promising draft. Especially if the deal is happening now, when there are theoretically 15 other teams that could be in the Kane market.
