Longer thoughts on the Wilson deal.
Is Wilson a good player? Yes. Even going on just his boxcars and not accounting for his physical presence he is a good complimentary top 6 forward. Is 6.5m fair in the near term? Probably, its a slight overpay for a good winger that isn't necessarily a driver themselves but certainly not egregious. Will it be an overpay in the long term (years 4-7)? Almost certainly. Will the Caps be good enough then to the point that one slightly bad contract would cripple them? Also almost certainly not. Is Wilson a fan favorite and leader in the locker room, destined to be the next captain? Absolutely.
A lot of national writers and stats guys have put this contract instantly in the Lucic/Clarkson category as one of the worst in the entire league. If the Caps were trying to maximize value (whatever that means) then yes, it is a bad deal they shouldn't have given out. This deal absolutely fits with their timeline though, and as a fan I'd much rather watch a bad team with Wilson on it than a bad team without Wilson on it. I think of this one as really similar to the Oshie deal. The front end was more fruitful and held its value for a lot longer than people expected and while the back end (last year to the end of his deal) is definitely not great, it's not the kind of contract that kills your ability to ice a competitive team going forward.
At the end of the day, I'm going to enjoy watching Ovi, Backy, Carlson, and Wilson play together and that is what sports is all about.

Full Retool
If there was a deal in place for kuznetsov to go elsewhere, Lindholm could be a fit for the caps. I’d do this deal without Protas included, top 10 protection on the first, and with the caps being able to nail down an extension with Lindholm. Otherwise it’s just too much to give up for the caps.

Flaming Cs 2023b
Caps look to make another run by moving out a top 6 center on a great contract, a young defenseman with second pair upside, and a second round pick for one year of a top 4 defenseman when they already have multiple LD who can play in the top 4 and do it well.

Archibald and Aube-Kubel had the same 12 points, albeit Archibald got it in 9 more games. That swap alone for points at least opens up $300K in cap. I understand the defensive side, but Archibald is kind of a complimentary energy guy with some upside. Lot of people value Rohrer pretty high(I don't see a spot for him on the Habs, but he'd easily make a run for the show on the Caps). As I noted before, that 3rd could easily become a 4th+5th, and Myers can be removed opening $4.4M instead of $3M.

Kuznetsov to Vancouver
Keep in mind that Johansen had 28 points in 55 games at $8M
Kuznetsov had 55 points in 81 games at $7,8M
I'm not a huge fan of Kuzy, and he had a pretty dreadful season in terms of advanced stats, but he's clearly on a different level from RyJo.
If VAN wants him half retained, they need to pay up.

Dealing Lindy and Noah
Kuznetsov is hard to gauge, but I think you’re on to something with the “hockey trade” idea, with him being rumored in a deal for Duchene and the fact that Washington is still looking to upgrade or change out a top 6 forward. However, with that said, I don’t think a Hanafin-Kuznetsov swap is in Washington’s interest. The Caps had 3 young LD play all or part of last season in Fehervary, Sandin, and Alexeyev, plus they added Edmundson earlier in the off-season, which makes me think a Hanafin deal (especially with Sandin needing a new contract next year) doesn’t work for the Caps. I believe if Kuznetsov is moved, it will have to be for someone Washington considers a top 6 forward replacement, probably at center.

You had an earlier reply to <a href="/users/perrystreett" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@perrystreett</a> that had earlier floated a 2nd, but I made sure to say “2nd or more”. The intent to show that Washington would not ask for much less than a 1st, or if I’m being generous then a 2nd, is still clearly there.

Boring option
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>That's idiotic. Foligno is twice the player Dowd is. Are all Caps fans this out of touch with reality?</div></div>
Foligno had 16 points when he was traded, he was playing awfully and anything else is historical revisionism. You may think that paying a 2nd for Dowd is unreasonable and on its face that’s true, but you have to understand:
- the Capitals intend on contending and aren’t in the business of dealing value contracts for lottery tickets just because the other GM asked nicely. MacLellan has made it clear he plans to contend.
- Dowd provides more value to Washington and MacLellan would be asking for since their aforementioned plans to contend are made more difficult by anchor contracts like Backstrom and therefore Dowd’s place filling the Eller role while having term on a cheap deal makes him much more valuable to Washington.
- another comparable would be Washington receiving a second for Hathaway as part of the Orlov deal, and Dowd is a more versatile version of Hathaway with term.
If you think Edmonton wouldn’t deal a 2nd or more for Dowd then that’s perfectly fine and almost certainly accurate. But to expect Washington to trade one of their most cost-effective players who fills an incredibly important role for table scraps and thinking it’s out of touch that Washington, a contender, would ask a high price for someone who helps them to contend, is foolish.

He is a big skilled forward but he does not use his size to his advantage (other than his reach). He can be elite offensively when hes on and take over games but its only happened a handful of times since he came to DC.
Caps love to include him in this deal I was thinking he wasn't worth it to Toronto. If he bounces back which he prolly will if given top 6 minutes and PP2 time he will be a 60+ point guy.</div></div>
Really eh? So he’s a big body but doesnt use it. Literally just a poor mans Nylander. At least he drops the gloves though. Maybe he plays more physical if he has more fighters on his team? I still want to believe he could workout here. Annd i’m straight DISRESPECTful to Nylander idgaf trade them heads up, **** that guyyyy.

If Mantha bounces back, we must trade him immediately, preferably to a team looking to make a deep run. Imagine turning Mantha into a first or second pick. Plus we clear his cap space to spend on Wilson and Sandin. Last, his roster spot can be filled by MCM, Lapp, Miro, etc.

Hockey trade
As much as I like ehlers and think he’s be a great fit there’s just no way jets move him for this type of package.
Mantha probably costs at least a second to dump at this point. A first a third and Lappy isn’t a terrible starting point but with his contract and two years left it just doesn’t make sense for Jets. Even if Mantha bounces back he’s still a UFA next year and likely gone for nothing.
