Opening night roster If I had a say
I think Givani Smith has shown enough to make the NHL roster. I'm not a big fan of Jacob Peterson since his xGF% was about as good as Oskar Lindblom at 5v5 last season in a small sample. I would swap Smith in for him. Also wouldn't mind placing Lindblom on waivers.
It's gonna be tough to fit Okhotiuk, Emberson, Thrun, Burroughs, and Knyzhov. My best guess is they try to sneak Knyzhov through because of his 2 year deal.

Opening Night Lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NotDougWilson</b></div><div>Sheng Peng (reporter for the sharks) talked with Quinn and said it's looking bleak for Couture to join them for opening night.
I don't think MacD makes the team either and is put on waivers. Bords stays on until Couture is back. I'm not 100% sure on Burroughs, I guess you can replace him with Knyzhov, but it's tough to figure out who would you rather place on waivers between Knyzhov, Burroughs, Simek (when healthy), and Emberson.</div></div>
Since Couture is out then I agree about giving Bordeleau a shot.
Okhotiuk also seems to be carrying an injury, and Quinn said that Emberson could play NHL minutes.
If Simek is placed on waivers no one claims him almost certainly. It's also questionable whether anyone claims Knyzhov because of his 2 year deal despite the NHL experience.
I also don't think Gawanke will make the roster and will pass through waivers.

Roster is too big. 23 is the max.
I don't think MacDonald or Bordeleau make the team.
You're forgetting Kyle Burroughs. He'll make the team almost surely.
I also expect Couture to be healthy but that's just a guess.

I agree, but this is a massive overpay on the Leafs side. I'm sure we'd be willing to accept other cap dumps to make this deal work.

Backlund and Duclair
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>yeah I agree, if retention is the difference between a 2nd and a 1st then yeah, better to do that than just get a 4th or something for Labanc/Hoffman w/ retention. I would just doubt that 1.5 in retention would make up a big difference like that.</div></div>
I reconsidered what I said before and having a 3rd team facilitate the trade by retaining 1.5M would probably only cost a 4th or 5th round pick. Forgoing those types of picks aren't a deal breaker.
The retention might be crucial for getting a deal done with a team like the Bolts or Canes.
Of course this all hinges on how the players perform through the year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>fair, but have to use last retention spot wisely. Might make more sense on a guy like Labanc or Hoffman because they have more aav, so more retention is possible.</div></div>
I think you're right about using the retention spot strategically to facilitate trades. But, I would rather watch Labanc and Hoffman walk as UFAs because their current AAVs make them untradable if it means we can get as close to a 1st rounder for either Duclair or Barabanov with retention. I think one high draft pick in the 20s-30s is worth more than a few mid-range picks that we could get by retaining on Labanc or Hoffman and trading Duclair/Barabanov at their actual cap hit.

I think you'll get some interesting reactions to this trade (one that is more likely to happen closer to the deadline if the Sharks' tank has sucked any desire of staying out of Hertl). I do think Boston is one of the few teams he'd waive for.
Boston fans will probably say overpay. They won't like the term on Hertl's contract. Other Boston fans might favor a rebuild and this just prolongs the inevitable.
Sharks fans might not like the lack of any good prospects, but with Boston there's not much to work with. Honestly, this deal is great for freeing up cap space as all contracts are expiring or flippable. The 2025 1st is great for us if Boston struggles to make the playoffs.
You can have MacDonald for free. Don't pay a 4th for him.

Mike Grier likely doesn't want to take on a 4x5 contract at the deadline, even for a 1st round pick, when his whole MO with the Karlsson trade was cap flexibility.

I know it's become something of a broken record, but the Sharks only have one retention slot remaining and they won't tie it up for 3 more seasons.
Sharks shouldn't have to retain if they choose to move Ferraro.

Best options for a 1B Centre
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>Your scope is NOT based on the trade itself if you're taking into account the season he had after the trade and disregard how he was playing before the trade. Also Lorentz was fantastic, what are you tlaking about. And Makiniemi looked pretty good at the NHL level and was good in the AHL considering how bad the Cuda d was last year.</div></div>
The problem with your argument is Burns was playing well with the Sharks, particularly in the season before we traded him. He had no injury history and played huge minutes every night.
Upgrading from Ferraro (who had a disaster season without Burns) to Slavin also made a big difference.
Lorentz was not fantastic. His underlying numbers were fairly pedestrian, so no need to exaggerate.

The Barbanov idea
So the Sharks get the 2nd for taking Mantha, and the stalling former 1st round pick prospect (who still has time to break out) + a 3rd round pick for Barabanov.
I could see it happening, but I don't know how the Sharks would evaluate Lapierre since his points don't pop off the page, and he's on the smaller side. The Sharks have a lot prospects with a similar physical profile, but maybe they would go for him as a defensively responsible 3C.
I would do this trade for Chesley instead of Lapierre, and you could keep one of the picks.

do you think Leon Gawanke can sneak onto the main roster? he might provide some PP upside seeing as he had 20 goals in the AHL last season. All the other D options look dire.
Otherwise we should run a 5 forward PP.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>riles23</b></div><div>I would love to know why Sharks fans think this contract is good for them? Yes, they have a lot of cap space, but that is because they are rebuilding. How is EK good for a rebuilding team? His value will likely never be higher. Even if the cap goes up next year, EK will be older and likely worse than he was this year, and still with 3 years left at 11.5.</div></div>
Maybe trading Karlsson with $14M retained for a 1st round pick (maybe like 25th overall) plus a bunch of garbage contracts and some B level prospects isn't worth it to the Sharks?
I would say the cap constraint is more of a detriment to the return package than the risk of just letting him play another half to full season. I think you're being too risk averse in your hypothetical asset management here.
Also, I never said the contract is good. Just that many fans like watching him play and management wants veterans around to tutor the young guys. So no need to rush through negotiations to acquire a late 1st, and an expensive one at that.
If you wait until the trade deadline a team may be more willing to trade better assets to acquire him.
Right now the Penguins seem to be the only ones in for him right now. Their fans refuse to trade either of their top two prospects even though they have a bottom 10 pool in the league. I don't know if this reflects how Dubas thinks, but maybe find a team with a deeper pool to trade with if true.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LivingAnew</b></div><div>THIS. All I could do was shake my head in disbelief when that contract was issued. Now, SJS has to bite the bullet. THIS is the year to get rid of him, like the return or not; his trade value is likely better now than it will ever be. If SJS can't accept what's available now in trade, then perhaps the only options remaining are to ride out his contract or buy him out at some point (a la OEL and Vancouver). The thing is, EK65's buyout provisions seem even WORSE than OEL's were!</div></div>
The contract was miserable for years 1-3, but feels extremely palatable now for the Sharks. Karlsson puts butts in the seats and keeps fans interested. He won't have the same season as last year because he has fewer weapons to work with, but under Quinn he will likely have a season resembling the last. Given how they've deployed him he shouldn't revert to the production from the Boughner era. The Sharks current load management plan also seems to be helping him to avoid injuries.
I don't think it's smart to offload Karlsson for a weak package because 1) the Sharks proved they can lose with him 2) the cap space isn't as valuable to them (they already have enough of it) 3) the cap will jump next season so more teams can afford him.
