Opening night roster If I had a say

Description
If I had a say I would do some drastic things. Our D is bad with or without the younger guys so why not roll the dice. I waive Simek and Macdonald and if they are claimed good luck. The wildcard here is my waiving Burroughs. He had a decent camp and would be first in line for a call up if he isn’t claimed. Normally I would have him as the 7th D but if we try and send down Emberson he likely gets snagged back by NYR or another team. My hope is Emberson stays with the big club and we can sneak him down in 5-7 games and bring Burroughs back up. Unless there’s an injury negating our need to move him down.

Option B is send Peterson down and roll with 8 D.

Couture might be ready by opening night, but I don’t want to rush him and let Bordeleau get some games in.
Final spot in the 12 forwards comes down to Labanc and Peterson and I would opt for Peterson to see if last year was a fluke or if he becomes Barbi 2.0

    Pretty good.

I might send Lindblom to the AHL instead of Burroughs.
I'd hate to have Okhotiuk claimed on waivers since he was a big part of the Timo trade. As much as I like Knyzhov, he might be less likely to be claimed off waivers than Okhotiuk, Emberson, or Burroughs.

Okhotiuk was already down I thought. Damn that’s another wrinkle. And as for Knyzhov I’m super biased but I want him to play with the sharks this year. I like his style more than Burroughs

So my edit here is Othotiyuk stays we send Peterson down and lindblom or Labanc fight for 4LW spot, or hope Rutta is out to start the season and we can IR him and solve this issue.

Simek might be on the IR to start the season

Waiver as soon as he’s healthy then and sent to the AHL or another team.

The easiest solution would be to send Bordeleau, Thrun, or Eklund down since they are waivers exempt. But that would be completely unfair after their strong training camps.

My point is I want to see the better performing prospects play at least 9 games. Then we can evaluate if they need more time in the AHL. Ideally Bordeleau, Eklund, Thrun, Zadina, and Emberson see the ice for our first 9 games and then stick and make things difficult for Grier and Quinn as they are forced to waive or move vets.

I think Givani Smith has shown enough to make the NHL roster. I'm not a big fan of Jacob Peterson since his xGF% was about as good as Oskar Lindblom at 5v5 last season in a small sample. I would swap Smith in for him. Also wouldn't mind placing Lindblom on waivers.

It's gonna be tough to fit Okhotiuk, Emberson, Thrun, Burroughs, and Knyzhov. My best guess is they try to sneak Knyzhov through because of his 2 year deal.

My biggest issue with Smith is one shift he shows flashes of really really good play followed up play very bonehead penalties or stupid plays. I don’t mind him as your 13th forward, but I don’t quite trust him as an every day player. Peterson has not looks good this preseason, but he had a pretty good showing to end last season so I kind of want to give him a chance to see if there’s anything there, but he will be on a short leash. I kind of have a sneaky feeling. Thrun ends up in the minors to start the season, which to me feel stupid because he has been one of the best defenseman we’ve had but he’s also waivers exempt. I don’t want to put a Emberson back on waivers and lose him back to the Rangers, I think it comes down to him or Othotiyuk.
There is a lot of factors here and I 100% get that what we feel is a bad decision might be better long term.
