Leafs make an attempt
First off "if" the Caps can shed Carlson's contract it prob would require retention and they would NOT want older players back. So three players for three players doesnt make a whole lot of sense for the Caps even if term lengths are different.
Dealing Carlson would be smart as I think he's on the decline....and DC could rebuild the right side of the D with Iorio, Bear, Alexeyev, TvR among others. And they could even move Jensen or TvR as well.
Carlson should yield a 1st rounder based on his historical production and PP ability. Maybe a good 2nd and a very high prospect if you cannot get a 1st based on contract term/cost.
Edmundson is worth a 4th or 5th rounder at best, he is a 7th depth guy on most teams.
Dowd would cost a 2nd rounder and a middle prospect. He is WAY too valuable for the return above.
Keep Kampf as he could slot into bottom 6 role like what Eller provided before he left. He's got 4 years of term but at a good salary. Caps prob say no to Brodie even at an expiring deal, there are too many defensemen to develop and that's some prime ice time. Niemala can get moved out of this deal too, he's got 0 NHL games and again there are 3-4 decent D that can develop on lower pairings and AHL.
If I were GMBM I would trade you Carlson, Edmundson, and Lapierre (not Dowd) for a 1st Rounder, 3rd Rounder, and Kampf, plus a conditional middle round pick based on # of games Lapierre gets at NHL level in 2024-2025. Or if he signs beyond RFA contract w/ TOR.

Caps hang up. Thats awful for Lindgren. He's held the net down for a really bad team this year. No reason to not get a 4th or 5th rounder for Edmundson...but Lindgren would be a much better return.

tear down
Caps will not be taking players back in TDL deals. They do not want contracts or middling career players or not so great deals.
Phillips is not a 2nd line player, barely cracks the lineup never...try again there.
Dowd will get a 2nd round pick anything less is a huge failure...
I would rather try to dump Jensen than TvR.
Get some help Kuzy...

this is true, but Kane decided to speak very poorly about the Caps after they did not take a flyer on him...he burned some bridges.

Alternate Deadline
Alternate Deadline because it would take an alternate universe for the Caps to part with Dowd for a 5th rounder. Good contract, hard working player, chips in on and off the ice. Prob the most consistent Caps player for years...ugh.

While I mostly agree I wouldnt trade Lindgren. He's been good and holding down the net...plus he is well liked and on a favorable contract.

good trades
This is not a "Good Trade" -- the Capitals decline. Kampf is on contract for 3 more years at nearly double what Dowd makes (which is expensive for a 4th liner), plus he's a less than .20ppg players that plays LESS minutes that Dowd. Even with a middle 1st rounder in this trade I think the Caps say no. Especially since you're taking 3rd and 4th round picks back as well.
Dowd straight up for a 1st (which no GM would offer) may be the only value MacClellan would accept. Dowd simply does too much and means too much to this Caps team.

TDL Moving and Not Moving
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Huge_Caniac_Abe_Lincoln</b></div><div>Where does Mantha fit into the Canes lineup? As the 8-9th winger, probably solidifying Lemieux never sees the ice (which is fine), but he himself is only on the ice if there is an injury. I don't think that is worth a second. I can't speak to other teams offering that if they have a need, but the Canes are not the right fit.</div></div>
If you all read the description...TEAMS ARE PLACEHOLDERS FOR VALUE PURPOSES.
a) I dont care where Mantha or Kuzy go, I just know they are prob not going to be in DC next year.
b) Yes, Kuzy is not worth a half-eaten sandwich and a bag of used pucks.

Selling is the right move
Caps wont deal Lindgren or Dowd. Both are basically holding together the team this year. A 1st for Dowd is wishful thinking too, but given his value to the Caps that is the only offer I would accept...

Caps decline, that is not nearly enough for Lindgren as he is holding down the fort for a bad team this year. You can have NAK for a 4th or 5th rounder though.

Prob wont be NYI as I think theyre in that weird spot of barely a wildcard team. I agree w/ SEA looking to get a bit more offense.

Selling At or Before Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>krakowitz</b></div><div>Carberry is absolutely not the problem. The problem is a roster full of old, slow guys who can't keep up with the pace of today's league. A lot of the changes Carberry's made (more passes breaking out of the dzone, more of a zone defensive coverage, etc.) have proven to be quite positive. He's finding ways to win games the Caps have no business being in.
If the Caps are able to clear all this cap space, yes they can now afford to add a top line center and others, but who do you get? It's apparent that Elias Lindholm isn't a true 1C, and there's nobody else that may be a UFA that fits this description. If GMBM goes the trade route, who's going to be available? Maybe Zegras? Even then, he hasn't proven to be a true 1C either. And what assets does this team really have to go get a guy like that?</div></div>
Agree the issue is age and effort, not Carberry

FIX THE LEAFS
Carlson is not the John Carlson he used to be...and he's a turnover machine, but that being said that trade is awful and the Caps hang up the phone. Laughable anyone would even imagine Willy and Reaves on the same bench. No way...not now, not never.

Dowd and Lindgren are not going anywhere. Both have very team friendly deals through next year, both well liked in DC, and both doing way more than asked of them (dowd as usual is keeping that 4th line glued together amid lots of turnover).
Edmundson is sell-off bait for picks only. Caps will not be taking on middling prospects or other contracts.

Zegras
i am not sure that would be near enough for Zegras as he is one of those talented and hyper-value players (wow factor) but maybe not necessarily worth it. and Kuzy is worth negative value. Bad contract, bad play, bad attitude, bad everything. He is not worth $4 dollars and a half-eaten sandwich, even to AZ who has taken some of the worst cap-dump contracts and LTIR grave yards in NHL history. And I am a Caps fan. I would rather take 54-year old Jagr back than have Kuzy at this point. Okay, maybe not...but you get it
