I actually don't hate this return. But doing my best to think realistically here, we would have to be getting a veteran replacement back in this deal as well, or more of a return, which WSH would then use to get one.

When it comes to College Free Agents you recognize that they very rarely become more than AHLers. It's not so much "is he the next Torey Krug?" but rather "Is he a future NHL player?". If a College FA can be a regular NHLer that's a win.
There might be something there though.</div></div>
Agreed, that's all I was getting at. Torey Krug is somewhat of an anomaly from college players but if he could become half the player he is thats still 20-30 points a year.

I feel as if they've exhausted all of their options, going on waivers every team had a chance to claim him, but no one would at that salary. Don't see him being moved unless buff retains 50% and takes back salary . Not saying they won't but running out of time. Terminating his contract would open up space for them to bring in either a player or salary with prospects/picks

Trying out a theory I saw
Doubt that Winnipeg gives up a 3rd and Roslovic for Montour. An even swap at the very least, even then not sure they bite.

Depth Moves
Their 4th line has been pretty good all year, they provide a lot of energy and chaos out there, however would love to see them score a little more. Don't feel the need to take Dowd out of the lineup but some depth would be nice in case a C goes down and a 5th is a low cost for that so I don't hate it. I don't see them trading for a LHD unless he can also play the right side, caps have Fehrevary and Djoos who can play if they need too but have no RHD with any playoff experience in the system. I feel this is the only area they upgrade in at the deadline. If one of Carlson/Gudas were to go down it would be a nightmare.

May overpay but worth it
Would love to see them add Vatanen and I like wood as well but how much of an impact can they have if they are slotted in where they currently are. Giving up a first for a marginal short term upgrade is not ideal. Would rather see them keep the 1st. Hagelin's experience is needed for the playoffs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ThatGuy</b></div><div>What's the catch on Lucas Johansen? seems like a pretty good prospect?</div></div>
A former first rounder, has struggled with injuries and been passed over by other prospects in the depth charts. Its hard for him to get any quality ice time in the AHL with regularity, believe its time for a change of scenery for him.

And you probably won't have to give up much for him</div></div>
Love his style of play, seems like the perfect addition for a playoff team and has a low cap hit. If we can get away with it, taking Djoos out and improving the pick a little would help with depth given that Djoos has a little playoff experience.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kylonetic8</b></div><div>He's already gotten a look, hence the three year extension. We don't need to spend over 3 mill on a backup that will only get 25 starts.</div></div>
His 3 year deal was more based on having organizational depth at G and having someone to expose for the expansion draft. I don't believe he would have gotten beyond 2 years otherwise. I'd be very surprised if Samsonov plays 55+ games next year either. Considering Reirden has only recently started upping the challenge for him in terms of the games he starts. He's faired well so far but there are a lot of hurdles for him to jump over to warrant starting him for that many games in his 2nd year in the league and 3rd in NA.

Seems somewhat risky to be assuming that a goalie with 30 NHL starts to his name and currently in the AHL to be "more than capable" of splitting time with Samsonov next year. I agree he's worth a look and has shown promise but the safe move in terms of depth is to sign a vet.

Value is admittedly a bit low, was basing this trade off of the comparison of Tyson Barrie but slightly different as Dumba has more term. Barrie was traded with Kerfoot and a 6th for Kadri, Rosen and a 3rd. Considering it would only be Dumba headed to DC, How much more needs to be added? Dumba is having a bit of a down year compared to Barries numbers when he was traded.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Two years for Halak? Is that second year really worth putting off starting Vrana's big long-term deal?</div></div>
Considering his body of work with Boston over the past 2 years, It'd be hard to see him taking less than 2 years and around that amount. I think he easily gets that offer from another team. As for Vrana I see them making a few roster changes to fit him in. Moving out Kempny, Hagelin or Panik and replacing them with ELC's would help.

How the Caps should line up in Game 4
I agree with all of your takes honestly. Was thinking the same thing about Stephenson, he's been invisible I'd rather Jaskin in to at least create a little more havoc in their defensive end. He plays a similar game to Foegel with less upside. They are putting a lot of responsibility on Carlson to fill Kempny's void and it hasn't worked out thus far. We need everyone on the back end to step up and honestly just shoot the puck more. Who cares if Mrazek has to make 40 saves I'd rather that and maybe get a lucky bounce over 2 SOG's in 2 periods. I like Siegenthalers game over Djoos purely based on size, they are exposing him and he gets out muscled a lot.

Caps lines moving forward
I like the idea of Jaskin in over Stephenson, I don't think Sieg's steps in and plays top line minutes like that but I like him in over Djoos at the moment. I like the forward line combos

Why on earth would the Caps give up on a promising youngster like Siegenthaler for a 4th and a 6th...I also doubt Vegas gives up that much for Niskanen

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>netminder71</b></div><div>FWIW on Conno:
I have a good friend that works in the Caps front office, in a pretty "important" position that aligns a lot with the players and listening to them as a filter to the front office. I spoke with him a few weeks ago face-to-face when the Caps were on the West Coast...
...On Connolly he stated that they've had numerous discussions about the future and Conno loves DC, he's made it his home, he won the Cup there, the Caps management resurrected his career after TB and BOS basically said he was a bust. He doesn't plan on returning the favor by crapping on the Caps for a few extra dollars. He fits in on the Caps, he has serious chemistry with Eller, and he's comfortable being a good contributing 3RW, than a 2RW that must put up 25g/40a or be deemed a waste of $4.5-$5M...that being said Conno indicated he was willing to make a compromise...a hometown contract in the $3-$4M range but with an extra year or two on it. So instead of $4.0M x 2 years he would be okay with $3.25M x 4 years. Which would take him to the cusp of his 30's and if he remains a 20-ish goal scorer he could get another 3-4 year "get paid" deal when that day comes....I think the Caps can afford that, and Vrana, and maybe Hagelin (on the cheap) if they part with Bura and/or Nisky at the draft...</div></div>
This is an interesting development, I love Connolly and all the success that he has had. I think ideally he wants to stay in Washington because he has been given a consistent role and has found a home on the 3rd line. I would be extremely happy with 3.25 x 4 as I think it gives us much needed scoring depth. That being said he is HOT right now and no doubt teams are considering giving him a decent contract in the offseason. It all likely depends on what BM does with Burakovsky as his money will likely be needed to sign Vrana and Connolly unless another move is made.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>staytru20</b></div><div>A couple of things here:
1. I really, really doubt that Niskanen is going to either waive his NTC, or has EDM as a team on his trade list. I'm thinking that MIN might be a good destination, because I see them trading a RHD to TOR this off-season to replace Gardiner.
2. I think some team desperate for scoring is going to throw a ton of money at Connolly. I think he priced himself out of DC last night. He has 19 goals, skating on the third line, playing very little to no time on the PP. Some team is going to take the risk that if he gets top six time, he'll score 30+. I think EDM throws cash his way.
3. I'd be surprised if the Caps give Burakovsky more than a 1 year deal at that price. Backie and Holtby are pending UFAs after this season, and that 3.3M could come in handy. This is assuming that the Caps will keep Holtby around, which depending on how this year's playoff run goes, could go either way. Personally, I think if the Caps don't repeat, they're trading Holtby at the draft or later in the summer to a team that had Cup aspirations, but had mediocre to bad goaltending (Calgary, San Jose)</div></div>
Initially I had thought of Niskanen to Minnesota as it makes a great deal of sense, but I wasn't sure about it being the right fit. They seem to be doing a bit of a re-tool and he is an aging defence. I guess teams can always use veteran experience. His championship pedigree would make him an asset on Edmonton, would go a long way to have him there to mentor the younger D (Bouchard, Jones, Bear etc) into becoming a pro. But I see what you are saying.
