Just a small compensation for the 20-30 extra points Marner would score every year.
But let's not get into minutiae. Wouldn't that US 2015 line be great or what?

You had to trade one Who are you moving out
This is an old discussion. I've always said that under the current cap, the large AAV contracts don't help players. It's a question of basic psychology. As a player (as in any job), it feels better to exceed expectations. This feeling brings motivation, and a positive feedback that further helps performance. And it explains why many players decline after hitting a huge contract.
In my mind, the optimal salary is the one that targets the lower bound of the market value for a given level of expected production. Ideal for performance and for psychological well-being.
Nylander is closest to that optimum, so he's the one I would keep.

Comments about issues in the locker room because of salary differentials
Some teams are built around stars. Some teams are built around a system that players buy into, with a balanced salary structure. The Leafs are of the first type, and we'll have to accept that.
It's reasonable to think locker room issues happen in top-heavy teams, but I'm not convinced it's currently happening. Who would be resentful right now? Obviously, Thornton and Spezza are near retirement and don't factor in that discussion.
The real impact, I think, will be the inability to retain/sign good complement players. Dubas will need to struggle every time to find equivalent and undervalued bottom six players, like he did (quite well) for next season.

My Dream Maple Leafs Team
Of course Lafreniere and a reasonable contract for Marner would help the team in so many respects. But both possibilities are just gone now.
Focusing on the rest, I don't think the changes are so beneficial. Shocking perhaps, but I would rather keep Nylander than signing Hall. And I would rather have Brodie than Theodore. Also, Lehtonen is really worth an NHL trial, and may exceed most people's expectations.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Cody Ceci (1 Year / $1,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rangersandislesfan</b></div><div>Cody Ceci is a good defenseman. Is he a top 4 guy? No. Is he worth his previous contract? No. But as a 3rd pairing guy (or an extra) he's a useful player. 1.25M is reasonable.</div></div>
I was going to write: At least Ceci won't have to deal with fan harassment in Pittsburgh. It seems I was wrong.
Your comment is spot on. He doesn't have the offensive production for a 4M contract, and the problem is that most people focus only on offense when evaluating defensemen. But he is very good in his zone. He was trusted by both Babcock and Keefe to defend a lead at the end of a game, which is more telling than the social media crowd. He literally saved a few wins on his own for the Leafs last year with last minute defensive plays - I wish I could post them all here, including the one where he blocked a shot at 5 vs 6 with just a few seconds left.

Quite frankly, it will be difficult to justify keeping Lehtonen on the bench with the season he's having in the KHL. I think it will be a delicate situation to handle if the Leafs want to keep attracting KHL players.
Also, I agree that Kerfoot needs to develop at the centre position if he's going to be part of the plan.
These contracts are at the correct value, IMO.

Are we there yet
I don't see how we can keep Mikheyev, Dermott and Engvall and make it work cap-wise. So I think at least one other move is coming, involving one of them.
Here you traded Kerfoot, but he's the only one we can't afford to trade. We need someone who can play 3rd centre. The position is too important. And 41-year old Thornton is probably not the solution.

TML draft class since Dubarelli in charge
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Daryl</b></div><div>You don't draft gritty players. Look at the Lightning. They drafted strictly by talent and then through free agency and trades brought in bigger and more rough players (Maroon, Goodrow, Bogosian, etc). Biggest story of the playoffs is how stupid every GM was for passing on Brayden Point at the draft. The NHL isn't about big zero-talent players that can hit; its about fast, high IQ, and skillful players that can produce. Always draft on talent, then bring in the bottom six plugs in free agency to beat up the other teams stars.</div></div>
I think you nailed it. I feel that Dubas is closely following the Tampa Bay model of years past and trying to snatch the Point/Palat/Kucherov type of players. This draft is the perfect example. We'll see how well it worked four-five years from now.

What does everyone think of the Draft
Good summary. I like the draft, all things considered.
Trading down in the second round was a smart move, to catch both Niemela (who was projected around #40 and who I thought the Leafs would take anyway) plus Hirvonen as a bonus. Many forwards who have been developed to play two-way game from a young age, which is a good philosophy.
And I really like the pick of Akhtyamov. You never know how goalies will pan out. Seems worth the shot.
Losing the 13oa pick and Jarvis will probably haunt us five years from now. But this is not a bad draft.

I'm calling it now: Jarvis will be one of the most productive players of this draft in the NHL. Mark my words. I was hoping he'd slip to 15, but the Canes have a wise scouting team, unfortunately for the Leafs.

That was a good decision, even though I value Guhle highly and would have been pleased with having him on the team.
The 14 best players were selected 1 to 14, which almost never happens. Dubas took the player with the highest ceiling at #15. This is what you have to do in the first round: swinging for the fences.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>not really Amirov actually was a good choice. He plays a good 2-way game, can create plays (borderline playmaker), is very good at skating, is good at both ends of the ice, and is a wizard with the puck having a completed pass percentage higher than Byfield/Stuzle/Lafreniere.
Heck many scouts were calling him a potential steal so Dubas wasnt risking it. Cause Montreal or Chicago would have grabbed him.</div></div>
I disagree with your assessment when you compare him to Hyman. He has much more offensive potential than Hyman, for starters. From puck control to passing and shooting. And in terms of agility.
The kind of natural talent that you either have young, or not. And he is not nearly as physical. Similarity with Hyman maybe in terms of hockey IQ. Mind you, I'm basing that on scout reports, but Will's video you posted above makes the point about the lack of physicality - and he's someone who was really high on Amirov.
I view Amirov as high risk, high reward. He has a very high ceiling, even star potential. But he might also never make the transition to NA successfully. The safe choices at that rank would have been Guhle, Schneider or Mercer. Probable NHLers, but not nearly as high a ceiling.
Leafs had hits and misses (and many misses) with Russian players in the past, which is why I'm prudent with setting expectations.

We'll see. He could be a trade chip for a defenseman. Given the way the draft went down, taking a risk at 15 was probably a good decision.
