Moving on from Marner

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capsin9</b></div><div>Caps in 9. Capitals fan... seemed obvious ha.
Love leaf fans though. Can’t make it out of the first round but you’ll let your best player walk bc you overpaid 2 other players haha I love it</div></div>
Marner isn't the Leafs best player.. & 1 player can't carry a team the whole way. Even McDavid couldn't. & if player are being stubborn and want a ridiculous amount of money that they aren't worth, you move them for assets to make the team better. Marner was 60 point player until Tavares signed and played with him. So you're justification that "wingers can make players better too" has some logic to it, but that fact puts it to sleep.
Theoretically speaking, if Marner were to sign an offer sheet, the return is massive for Toronto. They could use that money to sign a player like Skinner, say he makes $8M then. There's an extra $3M in cap space to spend on a d-man to improve the team. That also allows the team to have Skinner play with JT still, keep the Matthews, Johnsson and Japanen line together, move Nylander to 3C and allow them to trade Kadri for an upgrade on defence. Plus they still have 4 future 1st round picks which could be lottery picks of the team Marner went to doesn't make playoffs.
So by letting Marner her his offer sheet somewhere else, Toronto could theoretically get:
4 future 1st round picks
A replacement top 6 forward
Upgrade to the defence
$3M in cap space
... as a Leafs fan, I'd take that. Makes the team more of a contender.

Realistic 2nd contracts plus Trades
Minny has a fair amount of capspace, if a deal can be worked out around Kadri and Spurgeon, Leafs should get them to retain a chunk.

Realistic 2nd contracts
Thank you for putting out a well thought out, set of ideas that are based in reality. You used facts and precedent to solidify your argument.
My popular ideas for shedding $:
Zaitsev to OTT for Gaborik (then LTIR him)
Brown (in the hopes that Bracco / Engvall / Baptiste / 1yr UFA will fill the void) to SJS (Justin Braun; would facilitate another move) or EDM (2/3rd pick - don't want benning)
Kadri + pieces / Pesce + pieces (Nylander moves to #3C)
Nylander + pcs / Dumba + pcs (MM16 / KK24 / CB28 / TM42 play RW)
Wishful thinking:
after July 1 bonus paid to PM12; they can flip out the contract (if he wanted to retire) + a draft pick for LW short term size
its maybe wishful thinking, but just cause the team starts one way in 10/2019; doesn't mean that possibly by the new year 2020 that Sandin/Liljgren aren't part of the equation

Realistic 2nd contracts
Those contracts will only happen if they sign them before July 1st...Cuz teams will offer sheet Kap and maybe Marner

Very rarely do why see this mystery team that makes this offer sheet and how it affects their cap structure.

Upgrade right side D
Minnesota is not trading a very good #1 RHD for a bottom 6 winger and a 6/7th defenseman

JT, trade for Parayko
The Blues need a center and have wanted Kadri for a while, and with his performance in recent years, and his reasonable contract, that's a pretty fair offer. But the Blues aren't going to take that deal. You *might* get them to bite on Nylander. Fact is, while it is true that Blues' fans are notorious for over-rating their players, top-pairing-capable RD defensemen really are in greater demand right now. And, while the Blues are deep on the left, they cannot readily fill in behind Parayko if he's dealt. Carrick is hardly a replacement. And finally, there are other options that won't hurt as bad to acquire. The Blues, reportedly, are still looking to deal for O'Reilly and Skinner--and they won't be trading Parayko to do it. If I'm Doug Armstrong, I move Parayko for no one not named Draisatl. Edmonton won't want to do that, just as you wouldn't want to offer Nylander, or Marner. Sorry, but I don't think he's a realistic target.
I will say, though: that's a scary fantasy team you've assembled there.

Sticking to the Shanaplan, spending TML's cap space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>So you think one of the best 2Cs in the game who gets 55-65 pets per year is a cap dump?</div></div>
i don't think he is suggesting it is a cap dump, but he is using the leafs as help for a team thats wants ROR to save money, and the leafs get compensation for spending the money on ROR while he isn't even on the team. For this year, the leafs have plenty of money to do that

TDL - Modest Sell/Buy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfalstaff</b></div><div>I don't know.
Do you know what the going rate on a top-pairing D with one year left on his deal is?
Rental price (1st and prospect), plus cost-controlled top-9 contributor and another pick for the extra year, seemed reasonable. I suspect they'd find Kapanen instead of Brown more reasonable though.
Anyhow, Can't think of too many trades involving such assets, so... comparable would be interesting.</div></div>
Going price is: Blue Chip Prospect (Top 3/Top Pair prospect- not top 9), starts with that, nothing less. mid-late 1st, + 2nd + roster player.
Shattenkirk got a 1st, conditional 2nd, and Prospect who ended up being in the blues top 3 ranked prospects 1 PLAYOFF RUN. McDonagh has 2 playoff runs and a whole regular season worth.
The Price is based off of Yandle deal, McDonagh is better, he gets a touch more. But most of the deals we've been quoting are asking for the same. The counter deals we've received call for less.
The last time before that was Chris Pronger in 2009. Chris Pronger was traded at the draft with 1 year left on his deal and he was <strong>35</strong>
June 26, 2009: Traded to Philadelphia by Anaheim with Ryan Dingle for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, Philadelphia's 1st round choices in 2009 (later traded to Columbus - Columbus selected John Moore) and 2010 (Emerson Etem) Entry Drafts and future considerations.
(Lupul was a 50 point scorer and 25, Sbisa was Philadelphia's 1st round pick the year before). You think we should use that basis instead?
