Whats Hauge cost plus selections plus Murray
I really don't think NYI wants to make that deal with a divisional rival, and having a guy making more than Geno and Tanger on the 4th line is less than ideal.
We don't need both Driedger and Murray when Blomqvist was one of the AHL's best goalies and could very well beat both guys for the backup spot.

Pens with most likely contract extensions
I think that's a little rich for POJ, especially if he's going to be the 7th D for a substantial time. I'm also skeptical that Duchene would sign in PIT at all, let alone at $4.5M. He could get more AAV with the season he's had in Dallas pretty easily.

The guy that was 3rd in team scoring didn't help the Pens much? No, the problem with this trade isn't that the Pens aren't paying enough, it's that they don't have the RHD depth to part with Karlsson and Marner doesn't have an incentive to sign in PIT long-term.

My Radical Trade Proposal To The Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>There is no replacing MP and I admit the defense is clearly worse. I do not think the bottom six is worse though. Trenin is an upgrade over Smith at this point and Kampf is certainly no worse than Acciari. Marner is a 90-100 point winger who has always been counted on to be one of the leaders. In this team he does not have to worry about that and I think the guy would only benefit from getting out of the Toronto media world.</div></div>
I didn't say I thought the bottom 6 was worse, I said it's not better. Trenin and Kampf are another pair of defense-only guys. We tried that this year and it didn't work. We could keep Raks - He played well with Bunts & Geno, and was playing hurt - and add another top 6 winger like DeBrusk or a 3C like Roslovic. If we want to have a decent chance, our depth needs to be better, whether that's from acquisitions or young guys like Ponomarev, maybe even Yager if we're lucky, making an impact. I like Trenin quite a bit, but I don't think he's an upgrade to Smith and I don't think he's a significant impact. On a team with good depth, he and Eller are probably 4th liners. And they're both much better than everyone on that 4th line.

My Radical Trade Proposal To The Leafs
I've been interested in targeting OEL this offseason, but I don't think replacing Pettersson with him is going to result in a defense that's good enough. Marner is an impact player for sure, but I think the Pens' bottom 6 and defensive flaws need to be addressed, which Marner makes much harder. In this case the bottom 6 isn't better and the defense is worse. And it cost us our top prospect to do it.

I am begging for an ACGM that has an explanation for a TOR/PIT trade that isn't "Dubas loves his guys." All I need is one.

Marner Machinations
I've said it and I'll keep saying it: I don't think Marner is a good fit for Pittsburgh. He's only 1 year away from being a UFA, and the Pens are only going to have a couple more years of playing meaningful hockey whether or not we trade for Marner. Would he really want to sign long term through his prime with a team that close to a rebuild? If not, he could easily just walk next summer. If he does, that's going to put the top picks a little further out of the Penguins' reach while they're rebuilding.
Then on top of that, that's the Pens giving up a 1st and 2 2nds (or 2 1sts and a 2nd if Carolina makes it to the finals) for a player that doesn't fit their timeline particularly well.

I'd rather the Blackhawks win the lottery than have Tavares and Keefe in Pittsburgh.
You have offered us two rentals - one the fanbase is split on if we want and one we don't have any desire for at all - and a coach we want less than those players in exhange for our best defenseman, a 1st, and our top prospects at each position. No thanks.

Ok, I get that we're getting 2 really good prospects and a solid defenseman. But Karlsson and a 1st is a ridiculously high price to pay for anything. Thus, we're down a 1st round pick and - unless Guenther and the rest of the youth take a giant step forward - definitely worse. I'm also skeptical that Yager and especially Pickering are NHL ready.
As for Utah, what do they have to gain from acquiring EK? Karlsson's addition alone probably isn't going to take them from the bottom into the playoffs.

Marner And Keefe For Sullivan And Karlsson
I think if Sullivan wasn't going to be the Pens' coach next year, he'd have gone out with Rierden when he was fired.
And the Pens aren't interested in an EK/Mitch swap. We don't have the RHD depth to move on from him, and contrary to what you're being told Karlsson isn't someone the Pens can easily replace. They aren't moving on from EK after one year just because Rierdan can't coach a PP if his life depended on it.

I think if we move MP28, we have sign Skjei. There's no other LHDs available that are able to succeed in a top pairing role. Zadorov and Valimaki would best be a pairing below where they're being played.
Marner's great, but our defense isn't good enough at defending to make the team better than what we have now.

I'm supremely skeptical that any of Perfetti, Johnson, Jiricek, or Broberg would be available, and they'd all cost a lot.
Boqvist is primarily an offensive defenseman. We don't need one of those.
Dube was one of the guys charged with sexual assault from the 2018 Hockey Canada scandel. He's not playing NHL hockey anytime soon.
I've seen ACGMs for both Mangianape and Krebs, so I think those guys would both be available, and Victor Olofsson is about to be a UFA.
The only reason I think RNH would be available is if Edmonton ends up over the cap and can't make a deal to get rid of Kane, Ceci, or Campbell instead.

Toronto Maple Leafs 2024-25
Pens decline. Rust scored at a 74 point pace this season, and set a career high in goals despite missing 20 games. We're getting less term but a higher cap hit in this deal, when we can use that cap space better by adding to our depth. Also, this trade requires both players to waive their NMCs, which makes the deal significantly less likely even if both orgs were interested.

Another Leafs re-tool for your timeline
I don't think Marner would really be a good fit in Pittsburgh. Assuming he comes with an extention, that gives us a star in his prime a couple years before we enter a rebuild. I'm sure that's not where he wants to be instead of a cup contender. Meanwhile, he's good enough to keep the Pens from the best picks but not able to will them to the playoffs. Not to mention Marner is costing us more than Vegas spent on Eichel. PIT loses, Marner loses.

Youth and Compete
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>I get what you are saying but I'm just telling you how it really works.
1st year they just don't do this.
Look at DOC first real year here. 46 games last year. He had 25.6 minutes in PK time.
That isn't because there were no penalties it's because they don't put 1st year players on the PK unless they have to.
Baring injury, someone else will most likely fill that last PK role, at least until the 2nd half of the year. That's what history tells us.
They want younger players to focus on other things. Learn where to be, play off the puck, how to adjust to the speed of the game.
Even with Poulin being in the system so long, he's had so little time at the NHL level. In two years he doesn't even have 50 minutes of ice time.
That's not going to make them want to put him on the PK.</div></div>
Blueger was our top PKer in his first full season. It's more common for defensemen to get time, like Marino and to a lesser extent Shea. Both Gruden and St Ivany had decent PK time in their NHL stints this year. There have been instances throughout Sully's tenure where rookies have had a role on the PK. I'm sure I can find more if I go back further, but that becomes less relevant. And like I said, we still have Rust (or Nieto if he's healthy) for that last spot if they don't want to have rookies on the PK.

Defensemen get injured also, you need depth.
“Just cuz he’s French Canadian”…Letang’s deepest bond to anyone outside of the Penguins organization is with Kent Hughes.
And it’s way deeper with Hughes than with Dubas or new ownership. Just saying…</div></div>
Eventually being the keyword. Montreal has a lot of defensemen at or near NHL caliber. There's probably going to be time where you have to choose between keeping someone NHL ready in the AHL or lose a good player on waivers.
You focused a lot on Hughes vs Dubas when the real bonds within the Pens are with Crosby and Malkin. Is Hughes important enough to Tanger to break those three up? I don't think so.
And that doesn't change the fact that this trade isn't in the best interest of the Penguins.

Letang will be 41 when that contract expires. Does he fit the Habs timeline for 4 more years, or would he prevent Reinbacher or Mailloux from being in the NHL when they're ready?
As for the Penguins' side, No. They're not done trying to contend, and neither Jordan nor Harris make up for the loss of Letang. Retaining $3M for 4 years also isn't appealing. Also, just because he's French Canadian doesn't mean he'd waive his NMC for Montreal. I don't think any of Sid, Geno, or Letang have interest in playing for a different NHL team. Ever.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kous</b></div><div>When you factor in that Mitch is just hitting his prime now and can be locked up for another 8 years for a total of 9 I would say yes.
The Pens are going to need to rebuild, retool what ever you want to call it very soon.
Dubas make a mistake with the Karlson trade so he will need to do something to try and make the playoffs</div></div>
There's no guarantee Marner sticks in Pittsburgh long-term. I actually think he won't if he comes here. The Pens would be trading their captain, a top 5 NHL player of all time, who is still one of the NHL's best at the age of 36, plus a 1st and their top prospect for a guy who isn't guaranteed to stay for longer than a year. Surely that would help the rebuild.
Because Marner won't do that. Acquiring him takes valuable assets away from that rebuild, and then gives us a player that is good enough to keep us away from the best picks but not good enough to turn what the Pens are going to be in a few years into a playoff team. We have nothing. No blue-chip prospects, no young, homegrown talent. Just Marner and a bunch of holdovers that aren't young enough, good enough, or valueable enough to get assets for. Mediocre: the worst thing a professional sports team can be. Too good to rebuild, to bad to contend and stuck there.
Then there's the issue that our center depth sucks. Pens fans complained about Malkin as much as Leafs fans complain about Tavares. I think he's still good enough, especially with good wingers. Then below Geno on the depth chart is Lars Eller, Noel Acciari, and a couple guys with limited/no NHL experience. Real contender there, that Eller might be there 2C.
I don't think Karlsson was a mistake. There's still time for him to help right the ship, especially with Todd Rierdan out and the Pens with some youth and cap space to work with. This trade immediately sets that ship on fire and starts a city-wide mutiny. If you think there is a single thing it does that is in Pittsburgh's best interest, you're not thinking.
