<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kous</b></div><div>When you factor in that Mitch is just hitting his prime now and can be locked up for another 8 years for a total of 9 I would say yes.

The Pens are going to need to rebuild, retool what ever you want to call it very soon.

Dubas make a mistake with the Karlson trade so he will need to do something to try and make the playoffs</div></div>

There's no guarantee Marner sticks in Pittsburgh long-term. I actually think he won't if he comes here. The Pens would be trading their captain, a top 5 NHL player of all time, who is still one of the NHL's best at the age of 36, plus a 1st and their top prospect for a guy who isn't guaranteed to stay for longer than a year. Surely that would help the rebuild.

Because Marner won't do that. Acquiring him takes valuable assets away from that rebuild, and then gives us a player that is good enough to keep us away from the best picks but not good enough to turn what the Pens are going to be in a few years into a playoff team. We have nothing. No blue-chip prospects, no young, homegrown talent. Just Marner and a bunch of holdovers that aren't young enough, good enough, or valueable enough to get assets for. Mediocre: the worst thing a professional sports team can be. Too good to rebuild, to bad to contend and stuck there.

Then there's the issue that our center depth sucks. Pens fans complained about Malkin as much as Leafs fans complain about Tavares. I think he's still good enough, especially with good wingers. Then below Geno on the depth chart is Lars Eller, Noel Acciari, and a couple guys with limited/no NHL experience. Real contender there, that Eller might be there 2C.

I don't think Karlsson was a mistake. There's still time for him to help right the ship, especially with Todd Rierdan out and the Pens with some youth and cap space to work with. This trade immediately sets that ship on fire and starts a city-wide mutiny. If you think there is a single thing it does that is in Pittsburgh's best interest, you're not thinking.
