Keep that Copp dream alive
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NeedTheCleanser</b></div><div>Do you think you’re going to get a 1st round pick for Freddy?</div></div>
I think if they move him, it's to try and chase a perceived upgrade at the position (Kuemper, Lehner, etc.)
Taking back Hutton in the deal (even with the retention suggested) hinders that, as they would have cap space tied up in two backup level goalies already.
So if they are going to be downgrading in G (i.e. taking Hutton back), they are going to need a hell of a lot more than Montour to do it.
Hutton has negative value for the Leafs in this scenario.

Agreed... I just think that means they need better, more experienced depth behind him than Korshkov.
That's too much inexperience and unknown on the right side. It's asking for trouble.

I get it... I just don't think that RD side is good enough. Gudas has slowed down a lot from a couple seasons ago.
I'd rather add a better piece to RD (DeMelo, Brodie, Hamonic, etc.) and address the grit on the 4th line.
Plus, I don't think penciling in Korshkov and Barabanov as your bottom 4 right side is wise.
I think Barabanov is in the lineup at 3RW, but you need a better, more proven option at 4RW that can move up the lineup in case Barabanov doesn't work out in the NHL.
I don't think Korshkov is that guy (yet).
Plus, you've left over $2M in cap space on the table, so there's space for upgrading

I would use that extra $2.2M you have left to upgrade RD instead of Gudas (maybe DeMelo instead?), plus add some "grit" to 4th line, but that can still play (a Pat Maroon type).

Leafs take this deal, as long as a reasonable contract extension with Stetcher is agreed to.
Johnsson is a good player on a decent deal, but he's a luxury surplus on the Leafs current roster that is badly in need of RD.

So in the scenario presented, why wouldn't they just bypass CGY and go for RD Dumba?

They do need to ship Dumba, I agree, but they can get more than these spare parts offered, this offer is a better goalie on a 1 year contract, a 3rd line center, and a 4th liner and a 1st pick, which likely is late first round with the addition of all these pieces.
If you take Dubnyk with no retention, then, maybe this gets closer.</div></div>
It's already been reported that Guerin isn't bringing Koivu or Galchenyuk back.

We'll see... everyone was saying the same thing about Staal a few days ago ("He's worth a middle-six F plus a 1st!").
Fact is, with the no-move contracts to their other top 4 dmen, MIN have put themselves in a spot where they have to trade Dumba in the next year or risk losing him for nothing to Seattle.
He's also seen as a one-dimensional player, and is owed almost $6M per ($5.8 in actual $) for the next 3 yrs, in a flat cap where most owners are trying to slash payroll.
Sure, the Wild might end up with a better offer than this, but I think it's in the ballpark.

you're actually dumping on their cap, and they have some pieces to re-sign.
The Dumba and Greenway for Nylander trade that is being shopped here a lot might work and benefit both teams.</div></div>
The Wild actually have tons of Cap Space, with very few players to sign (and those needing signed not projected to take up much cap space).
They take advantage of that space here to significantly upgrade in G and upgrade C depth (their two biggest weaknesses), and get a 1st rd pick, while shipping out a Dman they need to trade within a year or lose for nothing to Seattle.

So how'd that mid six player + 1st or 2nd for Staal prediction work out???
I would say the original poster's offer was much closer to reality.

Gibson can be an option
People on here really overestimate the value of a goalie (any goalie) on the trade market in the NHL.
Look at the history of goalie trades in the NHL.
I don't think any goalie, ever, has gotten the type of package some people are suggesting on here.
While people can argue about hypothetical "value" until they are blue in the face, the fact is, goalies rarely get a huge return when they are dealt.

They are cap dumps in the sense that the Leafs want/need to free up cap space... not in the sense that they are on bad contracts.
Both players have decent contracts for their value.
The Leafs just can't afford these "Nice-to-haves" if they want to improve other areas of their lineup (i.e. RD), given all their money goes to the top end of their lineup.

While I don't see this working for SJ either... Andersen is not actually making $5m next season. He only has $1m in actual dollars left to be paid on his contract, which is attractive to many teams trying to cut costs.

I don't think Leafs would accept retention on either Kerfoot or Johnsson, unless it was an absolute slam dunk return (which Stetcher is not).
Both players are on reasonable contracts for their value.
I'd consider adding a small sweetener to Johnsson to get Stecher, but I don't think he's enough of a solution on D to decimate the Leafs bottom 6 C depth by dealing Kerfoot.
They'd just be swapping one problem for another. Or possibly even creating a problem (3C) while not really solving the problem they already have (top 4 RD)
