A pick in the 11-20 range has a 75% chance of becoming a full-time NHLer. Picks 21+ in the first round have a 45% chance. If the pick ends up in the top 10, which isn't crazy considering the debacles we've seen from the Devils, the chances jump to ~90%.

It will be tough to find a piece that will fit within the Wild's cap constraints. The Wild won't be able to upgrade in a Fiala trade unless it is a rental at this year's deadline.

Fiala is very underrated, and would have better numbers this year if he wasn't shooting 4.3% (career low). Also, the forward group's productivity also hinges on Holtz producing on Hughes's wing

The 2023 1st could very easily end up in the top 10-15, that's why Arizona would listen. Most teams offering trades for Chychrun will be contenders. Their 1st round picks will be late, which greatly reduces the quality of the players available. Ty Smith still has value, and can really take off in an organization that is good at developing players. Would Arizona be more likely to listen if Severson replaced Smith, because Severson will fetch a big return on the trade market?

If I were Shero
1) Carlson will be offered 7 years by someone and will probably take that
2) John Moore is worth a little more than half of that. VERY overrated. Would MUCH rather have Greene in a second pairing role over an often clueless John Moore
3) Eddie Lack is worth the league minimum, not 2 mill above it
4) Buffalo and Ottawa trades are tremendous underpays and would be rejected immediately
5) Hall and Johansson are both pass-first players. Palms and Hoffman are both snipers. Because of that, the lines don't make sense

2018-19 2 Big Additions
This team is pretty good, but I don't see JT leaving the Islanders. I like De Haan a lot, and I like the contract you gave him. I'm just worried that this summer's lack of Dmen will cause a team to spend even more on him which would be a same mistake. Hopefully they make that mistake on John Moore instead.

I like Pacioretty, and he didn't grow up far from NJ, but he is not guaranteed to play past this season for whoever he's traded to and will be looking for a hefty raise. The Devils would probably do that trade for Pacioretty if it was a sign-and-trade, provided he isn't demanding a contract that would make re-signing Taylor Hall impossible

Honestly, the only pieces that interests me from NJD (without asking for the obvious *Hischier, Butcher, Hall, etc.*) is Mcleod and Zacha. Any deal for MTL's top players would need one of them and a 1st (lottery protected) just to start the conversation. Anything less and I'm not interested. You have to give something to get something.</div></div>
Then it would have to be:
McLeod, Bastian and a top-10 protected 1st round pick in 2019 for Galchenyuk

Zacha is worth more than McLeod. He struggled to start the season, but really picked up his play in the 2nd half of the season. The thing is that the Devils need one more top 6 winger, which is going to be available through free agency and trade this summer. There are too many avenues for the Devils to get fleeced on a trade this summer

MTL doesn't need Severson and he wouldn't be in their top 4 on the right side. Habs already have Weber, Petry, and Juulsen as RD with plenty of RD prospects with good potential (Brook, Fleury, Lernout), unless MTL move Petry, but I doubt it. What MTL needs is Left handed Defensemen, after Mete and maybe Reilly, they have no one who could play top 4 imo (Alzner, Benn, and Schlemko are all bottom pairing guys) and they have no prospect in the pipeline on LD (Valiev, Walford, really nothing special...)</div></div>
McLeod, Wood and an unprotected 1st is a lot and would kill the Devils' pipeline. You think McLeod and a 1st (lottery protected) gets Gallagher?

McLeod is unproven and has given the Devils no indication that he is ready to make the jump to the NHL next year. He had a down year this year and will need to spend at least a year in the AHL. Severson would've been top 4 for the Habs this year and Wood would've been Top 9. If McLeod and a 1st gets Chucky, then the Devils should totally do that and use Severson or Wood to help improve their defense

NJ offseason. No JT or JC.
3 Things:
1) Klefbom is a better Dman than Severson. Klefbom's down year was still on pace or better than Severson's year. Klefbom is EDM's best LHD, and Severson would certainly not be their best RHD so it makes no sense for EDM
2) ROR is a huge risk which could really weigh the team down if it goes poorly. His contract will not expire before they have to re-sign Hall, Hischier, Palms and Vatanen, so if ROR's play tails off even a little it could absolutely kill the Devils' future plans. That said, I am a big ROR fan and I think he is definitely worth it if they can convince Buffalo to retain $1-1.5 Million. In order to do that, we need to offer them defense which might kill the deal from the Devils' side
3) Neither Wood nor Bratt have shown the ability to produce consistently, so it's tough putting both of them on the 2nd line. I think that Maroon should definitely be re-signed as he has brought an element that the Devils have sorely missed

Devils say no. Stone isn't good enough to be in the Top 4, and he isn't that much better of an option for the 3rd pairing than the Devils prospects. At this point, you are probably paying a team to take him

Lets have some trade fun
Yes, we might have a very strong right side, but our left defense is hands down the worst in the NHL. Butcher gets just over 13 minutes of 5v5 play per game, while most (if not all) top pairing Dmen play minimum 17 minutes at 5v5 per game. The difference is more than just 4 even strength minutes, especially when you look at the difficulty of minutes. His o-zone start % is 63%, which means that he is getting very sheltered that expose him to minimal risk compared to his other teammates on defense. The logical next step in Butcher's development is keeping him as 3rd pairing and giving him more unsheltered 5v5 minutes.
Jacob MacDonald has been very strong offensively for Binghamton this year, but he has not played a single NHL game. In fact, this is his first full AHL season after being stuck in the ECHL for a while. Also, I know that +/- is a flawed stat, but it can't be a good thing that he has the worst +/- on Binghamton. If he is even a little bit of a liability in the AHL, it would be exploited heavily in the NHL. He will likely spend next year in the AHL working on his defense and will be our first defensive call-up.
Yes, Andy Greene has been struggling. His struggles are coming from him getting 21 minutes of ice time per game, and they are the toughest 21 minutes a Dman could take. His minutes are all 5v5 and Short-Handed with over 60% of his zone starts being in the Dzone. He doesn't need to move to 3rd pairing, he just needs to be dropped to 2nd pair. Give Greene 19 minutes per game with slightly less difficult assignments (maybe 55% Dzone starts or below), and you will see a much different Andy Greene.
Lastly, Nashville will absolutely be able to re-sign Ellis. With his current $2.5 Mill cap hit, the Preds still have $3 Mill in space this year. Assuming the cap goes up at least $5 Mill over the next 2 years, they shouldn't have a problem re-signing him. Also, Nashville already has all their core players signed long-term, so Ellis is really the only one they have to worry about

NJ Boys Come Home and BIG Vegas Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>Maybe I'm not explaining myself correctly.
My scenario is-
If we trade our 1st (@ 16-20 most probably..<strong>IF</strong> we get into the playoffs) and Santini to Knights.
Vegas gets a defender who can play right now (yes I know stay at home) and an 18 old defender like Jared McIssac in this draft (for reference: <a href="https://www.draftsite.com/nhl/player/jared-mcissac/28717/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.draftsite.com/nhl/player/jared-mcissac/28717/</a> )
Yes we do not get a pick until round 4 in this case (but this trade had nothing to do with making a move for a potential #1 LHD), but Shero has added a 22 yo LHD D in Theo who plays now.
Will Vegas do it, probably not without some negotiating, and I see what you are saying but I would not give up Wood for anything but over payment, to add Sevs + is just that, over payment.
With the way we have played lately, we might be in the Dahlin sweepstakes anyway!</div></div>
I am familiar with McIssac, and I know that he is 2-3 years from the NHL. Vegas already has Brannstrom and Hague, so that isn't overly enticing to them. The mid-late part of the draft is not deep at wing, and Vegas already has Glass and Suzuki, so that isn't overly appealing either. Where Vegas is lacking is wing depth at both the NHL and prospect level; that's where Wood comes in. Vegas is also much weaker on the right side than they are on the left, so that's where Severson comes in.
Also, if this past deadline taught us anything, it is that Vegas wants players who can help them win immediately. They gave up 3 picks (1st, 2nd, 3rd) for Tatar because to them, draft picks are like candy. That same team wouldn't trade a player like Theodore, who is good now and has a ceiling near Norris levels, for a 1st rounder and a question mark. Yes, Santini is a question mark because he had trouble cracking the lineup in one of the least defensively talented teams in the league. This doesn't mean that Santini sucks, but it does mean that he is far from a known entity.
Yes, this might seem like an overpayment, but you have to overpay to get a player who can step right into the top pairing and hasn't even come near his ceiling yet. Overpayment happens for top pairing LHD because no team is looking to trade their best LHD under 30 yrs old. You have to convince the team to part with a player who they really don't want to lose, and overpaying is the only way to do that

I chose Galchenyuk because the Devils have been linked to him more than any other Hab. The Devils will try to make a splash in free agency, and trades will be the backup option

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lavsim96</b></div><div>But ain't Mirco Mueller able to do that job? like would you not rather have Greene play on a third pairing and let Butcher and Mueller get top4 minutes?</div></div>
Mueller has had trouble getting in over a struggling Moore and Lovejoy, so I wouldn't assume that he can jump into that role next year. Also, butcher is a very good 3rd pairing guy, but he is far away from handling 2nd pairing minutes. He gets sheltered minutes, and looks a bit overwhelmed sometimes when Hynes tries to stretch him. Mueller will start the year as the 7th Dman, and will draw in anytime someone gets injured. The hope is that he and Butcher show enough improvement during those opportunities to make Greene expendable at the deadline or the following offseason.
Also, when it comes down to finding a Dman on the left, there are really two options for the Devils:
1) trade Severson in a package to try to get a big return (OEL, Klefbom, Muzzin, Schmidt or Theodore)
2) keep Severson and trade Santini for a cheaper, stay-at-home Dman on a friendly contract (McNabb or Forbort)
I'm not married to either idea, and I have an earlier post where the Devils trade Severson to get Theodore. Also, the Galchenyuk trade is something I see the Devils trying if they are unable to sign a top FA forward like Tavares, Kane, Perron or JVR

I'll correct myself, you were giving up too much for Chucky but apart from that good post!</div></div>
Moore is VERY inconsistent and will probably be getting some offers that are way too good for him (Mark Fayne all over again). The Devils need a true stay-at-home Dman in order to reduce Greene's minutes, so McNabb is a big upgrade over Moore in that department
