Didn’t I hear that TOR want a RHD
Timing is everything. Unless Weber is going to be back in early November, the Habs can't go that long without a bonafide RHD. Juulsen will be good, but he's not there yet.

Pacioretty
This works only of the Habs are willing to re-sign Pacioretty for 4 years and then trade his contract at a 50% discount. It might still be worth it for the Habs. The Leafs, though, have far greater need of a RHD than a LW.

That is just openly admitting to the world that you regret trading him away. No GM should every publicly do so. While I agree that this scenario is ridiculous, Tampa could decide that Sergachev is too green and that they want to veteran to help them beat the Leafs. Still, that veteran is unlikely to be Weber -- no matter how well he plays when he comes back.

Why would Max Pacioretty voluntarily play another year at $4.5M? This makes no sense

TRYING something different
This deal only makes sense if Pacioretty re-signs with Montreal and is then traded at 50% of his cap hit. Pacioretty for 4-5 years at <$4M would be worth that return, but not unless he's locked up.
As for the Calgary trade, there's is no way I see that return springing Bennett, let alone Valimaki too. Bennett is not panning out as a star worthy of the #3 pick, but he's a good player. Valimaki is the #16 prospect on the THN list. Can't see them parting with him.

Habs Warming Spots for Kotkanemi/Poehling
Look at Ottawa as a cautionary tale. If you're a legitimate Cup contender, trading a #1 makes sense sometimes. Almost never at the start of a season and certainly not 3 years out.

Is this a good trade? Let me know
Montreal needs to re-sign Pacioretty with the understanding that they'll try to deal him to one of the teams he'd like to join. Montreal can eat 50% of any contract — certainly up to 5 years anyway — without much trouble. It's a win-win-win for everyone. Pacioretty gets certainty (lest he gets hurt this year), Habs get time to shop a better contract, and the receiving team gets Pacioretty for about $4M/year.

Pacio to LAK
This would be a "win" for the Habs, unless there's a way to salvage the relationship with Pacioretty. Given that is unlikely, Kempe alone would be a reasonable return and Forbort and Clifford and a pick would be a nice bonus. A better deal -- likely one that fell through -- would be a 4-year deal at $7.5M or so that is signed in Montreal and then dealt, keeping $3.5M on Montreal's books. The return could/would be considerably higher.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Herms17</b></div><div>From what I heard, Galchenyuks Dad was a nightmare. I love Galchenyuk and I think he could have been a really good player(still is) but If you want to take an example on how not to develop a player, see Galchenyuks case.
You don't score 30 on accident and you don't score 30 from pucks hitting you in the shin pads and going in.
So I don't blame Alex, I blame his Dad and the entire MTL organization. They consistently toyed with him. "Your a center.....oh wait you made a bad player here so.... now your a winger." then to only retry a few weeks later. Pick a position, let him go through the issues and work them out on his own. Kind of like anyone at work, you get a new position, make a few mistakes and learn from them and with time you are great at your job.
The Door knob of a coach now pretty much buried him and now he is playing in Arizona.
The Booze rumour is on him though(never heard about those rumours).</div></div>
Substance abuse was an issue and Montreal is really not the place for a father/son combo that likes to party together. The flip side is Domi, being diabetic since childhood, treats his body with great care.
As for blaming the coaches, it's worth remembering that, for whatever reasons, Chucky failed to impress either of Therrien or Julien. You might not like them but both have coaches marquee centremen at different times in their careers. And both want to win games, first and foremost. They clearly saw something missing in Galchenyuk and, twice, lost faith in him. We heap a lot of this on Bergevin but it is coaches who decide how to use players. Kirk Muller knows centremen and, if he could have got Chucky to focus, you'd think he would have.
My hope is that Domi shows he's a true centreman in training camp and either Drouin can be moved back to the wing or we see a set up of Drouin-Domi-Danault up the middle with Pacioretty, Lehkonen, Gallagher, Scherbak, Armia and Hudon alongside them. Byron and Shaw, once healthy, would slot in alongside Plekanen. JDLR, Rychel, Deslaurier and McCarron will fight for any remaining playing time.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>I'll second the Avs trade being ridiculous. Johnson & Barrie yes. Then you'll have three lefties plus Alt competing for ice time after Zadorov, Girard and Cole (Nemeth, Barberio & Lindholm), and then you have Timmins, Meloche plus Makar when signed to bring into the picture. The package isn't worth a first round pick. Byron is too old for the Avs picture. Last season Andrighetto scored at a slightly higher Pts per Gm ration than Byron to use your comparison and Andrighetto is younger. Sorry, your argument simply doesn't stack up!</div></div>
Valiev's top side isn't Meloche or Makar, but they'll need time to develop properly. Valiev is a cheap, game-ready option (substitute Lernout if you'd prefer). And if you'd rather go to war with Andrighetto over Byron (especially when you can have them both relatively cheaply), you're nuts. Byron plays both wings, sees almost no time on the PP, is a strong PK player, and was +21 in 2016-17 and -4 last year on a team that was outscored by 55 goals.

Galchenyuk was next to uncoachable and has serious booze problems (and maybe other things). His father, who is an idiot former IHLer who came over when the Berlin Wall came down, was a constant and unwanted presence in the Habs dressing room. He would text his son between periods with not-so-helpful game advice. Until he sends his father packing (along with his lost dreams), Chucky will be a lesser hockey player than he should be.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Again, I'm not saying that Petry isn't good, but spending $5.5 mil for the next 3 years on a guy that'll play on the 3rd pairing doesn't make any degree of sense. Plus that would immediately ruin any chances that they have of signing Silfverberg to an extension.
As for saying that the Avs pick will be in the late 20's, that's a bit of a stretch. They were a wildcard team last year, and got in by 1 pt. Is anyone really going to sit here and say that over the summer they improved enough to be a top 5 team? I seriously doubt it.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, nobody is trading first round picks for low upside guys. Byron is who he is, and on the vast majority of other teams in the league, he plays on the 4th line. As for saying that Valiev's development is ahead of Timmins? I can't argue for or against that, but am very aware that he's an AHL dman, who doesn't project as much more.</div></div>
My mistake. I had meant to retain some the max amount of salary and knock Petry's cap hit down by 50%. I'll fix now.
On the Colorado pick, I'd be willing to move it to two seconds in the event there's a lottery situation. I had assumed that Colorado is viewed as being on the ascendence.

Stripping it to the studs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>I'm not going to sit here and say that either Comtois or Morand are amazing prospects, but ask yourself this:
Why would the Ducks move prospects for a guy that's being paid big bucks, that would play on their 3rd pairing, and a prospect that has fizzled out a fair amount?
The Avs deal is also ridiculous. There's nothing in that deal that gets you even close to a 1st rounder.</div></div>
Ducks have Manson and Montour on the RHD. After that, you're down to Sustr, who's a UFA. Petry had more points than both Manson and Montour and gives the Ducks depth and strength where they're currently thinnest. If they're going to take a shot at a deep run into the playoffs, they'll need to upgrade the D. Anaheim has a history of making warships out of aircraft carriers -- like Chipchura. So, Petry for Comtois is reasonable. McCarron for Morand is a gamble for both teams.
Byron is a middle-6 winger capable of playing both sides. He's a much better player than Andrighetto, who they have in there now. Valiev is an RD on a team with only Erik Johnson and Tyson Barrie as RDs (his development is ahead of Conor Timmins). Those two players and swapping what should be a low 60s pick for a late 20s is not that big a stretch.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goldendelicious</b></div><div>This is a major reason why Sylvain Lefebvre was fired (albeit years too late) and why they hired Joel Bouchard. The also added Dominique Ducharme to the pro bench. Overall their prospect/young player development should vastly improved if the coaching successes they had in junior continue. So why you continuously look to the past, you need to keep in mind that they've undergone a massive overhaul here. I've long believed this was and would lead to their downfall and it shows. The Habs didn't necessarily draft bad in the past, but any development was basically solely on the player themselves.</div></div>
Maybe, but while the Habs seem to pick Dmen who either make it in Montreal or find a way to scrape out an NHL career, the same is not true of forwards. Honestly, I think the scouts know what it takes to be an NHL dman but are oblivious to what makes up a good forward. Now you can't predict that your top draft pick is going to be a daddy-worshipping-alcoholic, but when you look at Scherbak (early), McCarron. JDLR, Collberg, even Lehkonen there's a pattern of mediocrity within the forwards. Let's hope Poehling and JK are the harbingers of change.

This is fun except there's precious little on which to base all this optimism. Aside from being pretty good at drafting defencemen, the Habs history of drafting and developing forwards is pathetic. Were it not for Gallagher, who has exceeded every scouts' wildest expectations, the Habs have hardly anything to show from the drafting of forwards: Scherbak (???), McCarron (!!!) JDLR and Lehkonen (meh)... So why do we assume Kotkeniemi and Poehling are going to break that pattern of mediocrity? I hope you're right, but I've stopped expecting it.
For a guy who comes from an industry that's all about quality control, it's amazing that Molson hasn't busted more heads in his scouting ranks.

Habs don't really have a place for Clifford, though he'd be an upgrade on Deslaurier. Ericsson, with 2 years and $4.3M on the cap doesn't hurt the Habs (who can take time to develop Mete), but I wouldn't give a decent pick for him. Maybe McCarron or, better yet, Shaw at 50% of salary. If Shaw is on LTIR, he doesn't cost anything and, if he's healthy enough to play, he's a useful player on a playoff-bound squad.

Max to Detroit makes sense, but the Wings giving up Larkin is a non-starter. The Wings are 3-4 years along in their rebuild, with Mantha, Larkin, Zadina and AA making up the nucleus of a pretty good team. It's not hard to imagine Max would be a good addition to them and would be happy in DET long term as well. If the Habs want to use cap space, it would make sense to do so with the Red Wings. But the deal would have to be for Veleno or picks, not for a roster player like Larkin.
