How much would they cost
Lou is old school enough that I feel like the in-division cost to move Pelech would be astronomical - you would hate what you'd have to pay there. I'd think a 1st + POJ is the starting point with more needing to be added.
I'd also be confused as to why a team with a pretty pricey top 4 (Karlsson, Letang, Pettersson, Graves) would be looking to add another expensive LHD like Krug or Pelech - you're gonna wind up with a $4M+ third pair guy, which is not something you really want to do if you're trying to build up a deep playoff team.

Off Season
I honestly don't hate this trade. Pulock is basically RD2 now with Dobson being a guy I can see getting a handful of Norris votes this year; if we can swap him out for a young, top-6 forward like Perfetti while also getting someone to backfill RD2 for a year, I think it's a good deal. I'd think about swapping Nate Schmidt instead of Pionk, for two reasons: first, hoping that it makes it appetizing enough to Winnipeg to drop the 3rd from the Isles side; second, I think Schmidt replicates what the Isles would be losing with Pulock better than Pionk does. But that's a minor quibble at this point.

Ah, I was looking at the line combos on DailyFaceoff and completely missed that he's hurt right now. I agree, he should be getting middle-6 minutes next year regardless of what they do next summer - he looks ready.

I have no idea what Im doing lol
-I think the retention is just too heavy here. I get that it doesn't make sense for the Kings to take Binnington at $6M; but I also think they could find a goalie of similar caliber for less of a package. Maybe you call up Vegas and see if they'd be willing to clear Adin Hill's $4.9M now that Logan Thomson looks capable of being a #1 on a sub-$800K deal. Maybe you talk to Barry Trotz and see what you'd have to add to this to get Juuse Saros. Maybe you just keep Cam Talbot (2.46 GAA/.915 SV%) and offer him the $3M you'd be paying Binnington here. Whichever way you go, I think there are much simpler and/or cheaper options for the Kings to pursue - paying for that much retention just doesn't make sense to me.
-I could see the Panthers doing this but I also think they have more pressing needs - this summer they've got just over $20M in space with 7 F / 5 D / 2 G signed. D-wise, they've got a top pair (Ekblad/Forsling), a #4/5 type (Mikkola), and a pair of #6/7 types (Balinskis/Bjornfot.) I think they probably focus on the forward group first and settle for a top-heavy D corps if they run out of space - I also think 3 years of $3.25M is a ton of money to eat for a mere 2nd round pick on the Blues side of the equation.
-I am super intrigued by this deal, honestly. Ballparking the draft pick value basically has Vancouver giving up the equivalent of a mid/late 2nd round pick, in addition to Podkolzin (change of scenery needed) and Wallinder and they upgrade Mikheyev into Buchnevich with 50% retention. Canucks turn a 30 point middle-6er into a 65-70 point top line winger while saving $1.875M in 2024-25; St. Louis gets a little extra draft capital and a good prospect in return.
Really depends on where Vancouver thinks they are. If they think their window is right now, I make the move - you're giving up on a guy who could be a big deal but is still 2-3 years away from being in the NHL. Buch is still young enough that you could give him a JT Miller extension and get good value out of it; I honestly think it's a worthwhile gamble. I think it's a pretty solid deal for both sides.

75 goal differential offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>Not opposed to higher AAV shorter term deals! Yours was the fist positive comment in 2 pages. Thanks!</div></div>
I mean, it makes sense. If you can dump Anderson and bring guys like Armia & Gallagher out of the top 6 and into more appropriate roles based on their production, I think you have something here.
I don't know if this team is good enough to swing the goal differential by 75 goals, but barring any other moves the Habs 2nd through 4th lines next year probably look like:
Gallagher - Newhook - Dach
Armia - Evans - Anderson
RHP - Dvorak - Pezzetta
To me, you've got Brendan Gallagher in over his head on that 2nd line, and then you've got two checking lines behind that. Adding Stephenson & Monahan while subtracting Anderson really shifts that middle 6 towards being more productive - and seeing as how you've still got nearly $12M in cap space with this team now, I think bumping up their combined AAVs around $3M is worth it. Like you said - there's no one in Laval really pushing to be in the lineup next year. The best scoring U25 players on the Rocket are Xavier Simoneau (5'7" center who somehow has 111 PiMs despite only fighting once this year) and Sean Farrell (5'9" winger who looked out of his depth at the NHL level last year and probably needs another year of seasoning at this point.) You're not holding anyone back by giving those top-6 spots to productive veterans.

I honestly think this is a spot where the Habs can weaponize their cap space - offer Stephenson and Monahan higher AAV deals with shorter term so you're not worried about them clogging the lineup on the back half of the deal. Feels like you could throw 3x$7M at them and sell them on the idea that they should be easily able to get beat 2x$4.5M coming out of their age-32 seasons, especially if they show themselves to be great locker room guys, shepherding a young Habs team into contention.

2024-25 - Isles - 5mil for a LW-UFA - Increase estimate 87mil
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Earth2Fire</b></div><div>Is there a rule explicitly stopping it? From what I understand 20 is the minimum. Eventually injuries will create enough cap space for another 2 players.</div></div>
There's no rule against it, but it becomes an issue when you have someone who has a nagging injury that needs a night or two off - perfect example right now is Noah Dobson. You *could* put him on LTIR and free up the cap space to call someone up, but LTIR specifically states that a player must be out for 10 game or 24 days, whichever comes first. So you either have 8 extra games of Grant Hutton playing every night, or you find the way to have a couple of healthy scratches that you can rotate in and out of the lineup as necessary.

Plus Romanov in many regards has declined since leaving MTL in most regards with exception to 8-9 points a season more</div></div>
Legitimately curious what you are basing that on. First - 8-9 points per season might not be a lot for a top-6 forward, but Romanov has gone from scoring 0.14 pts/game with Montreal to 0.28 with the Isles - literally doubling his scoring output. That's a pretty significant step towards being an all-around top-4 guy.
The team's 5v5 numbers with him have been excellent too - his two seasons with the Isles, New York's outscored the opposition 117-96 (the Habs were outscored 99-88 during his tenure in the same 5v5 situations.) He's committing less penalties, he's had less giveaways, and he's blocking shots at basically the same rate. I just don't know how you can look at what he's done the past 2 years in New York and argue that he's declined compared to his time in Montreal.

Isles would decline - they gave up a lottery pick to get Romanov, and I don't think it's a stretch to say he's improved in the last 2 seasons since that trade. He's still cheap enough that he fits on the roster with no issue, meaning that to get him out of there you're going to need to blow them away with an offer. Pickering is an interesting prospect but nothing here blows me away enough to think about moving Romanov.

Huge Oil Change
Here's my mildly tortured take on this: during the time they've both been in the league, Leon Draisaitl's Oilers have won the same number of playoff series as Mat Barzal's Islanders (4). The difference is Drai has been skating alongside Connor McDavid when he was doing that and Barzal was dragging Leo Komarov up and down the ice in his series wins.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd rather spend the $15.3M on Barzal & Pulock and keep the 1st instead of giving about the same cap hit to Draisaitl & Broberg. This move would definitely make the Islanders a better regular season team, sure, but I don't know if it actually makes them any better of a playoff team than they currently are.

Oh yeah, I'm getting stuck in the weeds there on Krebs' value, but I think a pick that is #8 currently and a change of scenery guy like Krebs is fair value for one year of Nelson - even if I'm not sure he makes a ton of sense in Buffalo. I think the Sabres are close but Nelson feels more like a finishing move for a strong contender than a guy that goes from one bubble team to another.

at this point in time, that is one hell of a caveat for a guy getting paid nearly $48M over the next 6 years.
i honestly wouldn't do this trade if I were running the Islanders. He's missed 106 games over the past two seasons and who even knows if that shoulder holds up after the third major surgery on it. He's too big of a gamble to take based on the term and cap hit you'd be looking at.

Next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tjm220</b></div><div>About the same as Casey Mittelstadt’s value was when he was 23 years old.</div></div>
Mittelstadt was much more advanced at this point in his career than Krebs currently is.
Mittlestadt through age-23 season: 195 GP, 33 G - 47 A - 80 PTS, 14:25 TOI. Averages out to about 34 pts/82 GP.
Krebs through age-23 season: 203 GP, 19 G - 44 A - 63 PTS, 13:35 TOI. Averages out to about 25 pts/82 GP.
And if you want to point out that Krebs has been saddled with less offensive linemates, you have to then also acknowledge that early in Mittlestadt's career some of his most common linemates were the likes of Rasmus Asplund, Conor Sheary, Jimmy Vesey, and pre-breakout Tage Thompson.
I don't think Krebs is a bum, but at this point his value seems to lie more in hoping a change of scenery helps him than in his former draft pedigree.

post draft retool
The Palmieri dump makes zero sense to me - before we even get to arguing whether it's worth it for the Hawks to take it I think we have to acknowledge that you've cleared more than enough money to keep Palmieri on board for the last year of his deal. There is too much term (and too much talent in goal and on the blueline) for this team to fully tank, so I can't imagine any GM running out a lineup where 5 of your top 12 forwards are rookies - so instead of spending money to move a guy who's pretty consistently been a 20 goal/45 point guy on the island, keep him around and have him set an example for the kids.

I don't hate Chych but I don't think I make that trade if I'm in charge of the Islanders.
Going into next season NYI have $6.875M in cap space available with 9 F / 6 D / 2 G under contract - swapping JGP out for Chych (plus the $1M retention) knocks them down to $6.275M in space with 8 F / 7 D / 2 G. I'd also say that since they already have Adam Pelech, Ryan Pulock, Noah Dobson, and Alex Romanov under contract for next year (plus 6x$3.5M left on Scott Mayfield's deal), there really isn't a glaring need that Chychrun fills here - they already have a fairly solid (and costly) defense, so spending a 1st rounder and eating some cap to basically make the 3rd pair better feels like a bad allocation of resources to me.

Yeah, would have to be a sign and trade - I think Vegas would do it but would 100% point to that Severson deal as the cost of doing business - I'd honestly do that, it's worth the extra year and the lowered AAV.

Idea but not happening
-I don't the Kings bite - they already have Mike Anderson and Vlad Gavrikov signed next season at a combined $10M, not to mention Drew Doughty hanging around with an $11M AAV. Not saying Hedman isn't worth it, just saying that I would think the Kings are more interested in shoring up the goaltending situation and extending Quinton Byfield and they could use the assets and cap space to address those issues.
-I could see the Isles making this type of move, especially if they wind up trading JG Pageau. Move Cizikas up to 3C/PK1 and use Glendening as 4C/PK2 and win every faceoff ever.
-Keep the pick, wait a week. Only team that Hanifin can sign an 8 year deal with now is Vegas - you have to be on the roster at the deadline to be eligible for that, so trading for rights won't really do anything here.
-I like Andersson, but not this much - this is two 1sts, a solid & cheap bottom pair player, and one of your best remaining prospects for two years of a solid 3/4 type. I think you could aim higher with this package but also think it's a moot point because I don't think you get the picks from LA.
-I'd defer to Avs fans here, but I think there needs to be just a little more here. LOC is a solid third liner on an affordable deal, and Colorado is cap strapped too - they're gonna need value to pry him out.

I like Rutta as a Lyubushkin replacement actually - big, strong, defense-first RHD. And if you're a Leafs fan that wants a David Savard, I think Rutta can do 90% of what Savard does at a lower cap hit and at a much lower acquisition cost.

I think the Isles would pass on that, purely because the financial aspect is awful for them. This deal upgrades LD2 for them, sure, but between the difference in Chabot & Romanov's salaries plus the retention on JGP, it's adding $7.5M to their cap next year while opening a hole at 3C. Quick look at the numbers puts them at about $4.375M under the cap with 8 F / 6 D / 2 G under contract. Simon Holmstrom needs an extension, so even if you clock him at $1M AAV, that basically means you can sign 4 more league minimum players and run a 21-man roster.
All that, and they're giving up picks too? No thanks.

Tkachuk-Style Trade To Upgrade Top Six
The big issue to me is that if you're looking for a Tkachuk-style trade, CBJ has to be sending back a Huberdeau & a Weegar and I don't know if that's on this roster currently. I can see a Laine or Gaudreau being the Huberdeau, but the closest to Weegar I can see is Provorov - and considering Provorov is already collecting $6.75M per year on his deal, I don't think you're going to be able to extend him to the type of contract Weegar agreed to.
I think you can immediately rule out Barzal & Bratt, though - I can't see two GMs making this type of trade intra-divisionally. I also think that Necas/Konecny/Batherson, while very good, are not quite on the level that Tkachuk was at the time of the deal.
Keller is the most interesting option to me - the Coyotes are losing more than $13M in dead contract IR this summer (Bryan Little/Jakub Voracek), and while there are always dead contracts to acquire, I think bringing in Gaudreau & Provorov for Keller would be an interesting move. I think the issue is that NTCs start rearing their ugly heads when you talk about sending someone to the Mullett.

I'd move Tyce Thompson & Kyle MacLean down - they're 4th line callups at best. My feeling is MacLean got the callup because he's a guy they don't think there's much development left in, and it's fine throwing him out for 9 minutes a night. Thompson has done the same for the Devils. And Cameron Berg has been the leading goalscorer on a very good NoDak NCAA team - I hope they sign him and give him some run towards the end of this AHL season.
Also don't sleep on Henrik Tikkanen in that goalie depth chart - he's not signed yet but he's playing in the org and has put up a .927 SV%/2.20 GAA in 14 AHL games. I think he'll be someone to keep an eye on going forward.
