hey now... I had to make the numbers work to hit the cap floor (mainly). Also, if he plays anywhere like he did last year, that's big value for his contract. I didn't hate the idea of a Matt Murray trade, but I don't like the term left on his deal. But now knowing supposedly John Gibson has informed ANA that he wants out, I'm not opposed to that either.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingMurray</b></div><div>Do YOU have a better idea to get rid of Bjork? (Actually, you did earlier!)
As much as I like Chychurn I gotta agree - with their current D Buffalo really doesn't need him. Wisest move is to get some veteran help that isn't going to cost any top prospects.</div></div>
Did something happen where all of a sudden every LD can play RD? There is a reason NHL players stick to one side. Playing both is challenging. We are stacked at LD. Not all can see roster time, and Johnson is almost at that point. We need RD, and in my mind, this trade puts you at the best spot for a playoff push. You have to sacrifice pieces to get good players, end of story. This would be case and point.

If we make a move, look elsewhere</div></div>
You have 3 LD in Dahlin, Power, and Samuelsson. They may try to switch Dahlin to the right, but there are no guarantees on that. So Johnson is the 4th LD on the depth chart. He is expendable. ARI wants a high player, high prospect, and 1st for Chychrun. My trade is around same value. Chychrun is the perfect RD to plug and play in Top 4, and is also cost controlled for 3 years, when players like Asplund, Krebs, Samuelsson, Power will need extensions. I like the idea of a grittier player, but if Chychrun is available, I think you do what you can to snag him.

Quinn does have the talent but you need to A) see how he is post injury, and B) if what you are stuck paying other players doesn't equate to forcing Quinn in the lineup, then you absolutely do 1 more AHL year or even a half year and flex him up with injuries/trades.
But also like I said, if they decide not to tender Olofsson, we aren't even having this talk, he's on the roster. And the "one year AHL won't do him any good" is such a piss poor argument from someone who clearly doesn't look at analytics in terms of growth. Tons for Quinn to develop, especially defensively, and the AHL would 100% help him with that. It would be like everyone who made the argument that Grigorenko was NHL ready, when he clearly wasn't and the AHL had way more potential to develop his game. (Quinn is ions better than Grigorenko, I'm using their situation as a relation and that's all). Quit rushing players who could benefit from big AHL minutes/responsibility. Not everyone needs to be NHL ready after 1 year.

I agree Quinn and Peterka should be, but them on ELC's give you the flexibility to ride out one more year of contracts (Okposo, and then even Bjork/Olofsson [depending on his deal])
I like both Samuelsson and Fitz, I could see Bryson being expendable and Samuelsson taking his spot with Fitz being the scratch and rotating in.
This roster is mainly the prep year for a big 23/24 year, with a potential playoff run if MAF plays like a madman.

I think he has the ability to shift to C at any point in the season, so if they shift Reinhart back or Injuries he can slide back to C.
Only problem with pulling up Pekar IMO is that this team is incredibly young. I think besides Skinner everyone would be younger than 28 on the team. So finding a defensive 4C that can provide a bit of leadership wouldnt be the worst thing. Keep it low cap hit low term and its really low risk. If that person flops than have Pekar be your first call up.</div></div>
I can be on board with this. Any particular 4C you think would be a good fit? Our FA record has not been solid these last few years, so I think that's where I'm hesitant

That is a massive overpay for Keller (both the trade, and his AAV), Skinner on the 4th is just another Krueger move and only hurts this team, and Dahlin doesn't make less than 6m, whether it's a long or short term deal.

Is he going to put in 25-30 goals and 70+ points? Probably a 0.1% chance. But when you have a player that is defensively sound, it allows everyone else to flourish. Girgensons on line 2 allows Olofsson to focus on being a pure offensive sniper. I'd love for him to turn into an excellent 2-way winger, but at this point, I need pucks in the back of the net. And Olofsson focusing on that benefits this team. So let Girgensons play his defensive, gritty play, cause turnovers, and be an overall annoyance to enemy teams.
FWIW I can see Girgensons (barring injury) having a stat line of something like 14-24-42 on the 2nd line. Is that amazing? No, not at all. But does he bring value to a 2nd line? I believe so.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoyalBlueSabres</b></div><div>Yeah, I don't mind Gusev was really high on him before he went to NJD and just never got going there.
My worry with Gusev is that he turns into a middle 6 player and right now besides Eichel the whole team is mid 6 talent. Reinhart would be a top Line Wing but sounds like they are keeping him at center and he is definitely a 2c.
If skinner can round back into form I would say he is a top-line talent.
But Buf has Mitts, Cozens, Reinhart, Olofsson, Bjork, Ruotsalanien, Asplund, and Thompson to make the middle 2 lines. I do not know how they are going to do it, I don't really want to lose any of those guys but they need to upgrade somewhere. If it were me and they did not upgrade any body My forward lines would be
Skinner Eichel Cozens
Olofsson Reinhart Bjork
Ruostsalainen Mitts Thompson
Girgenson (Sign Defensive 4c) Asplund</div></div>
The big issue I have with this is you don't draft Cozens to play wing. As much as I love him along side Eichel, the reason you take him at 8 is to eventually fill in the 2C hole. I love the idea of him playing with Eichel, but I need him to be playing a center role. If Eichel gets traded (like 2% chance IMO), Cozens ends up being your 1C. You start him at 3C for his first couple years (3 max if he doesn't regress), and then he takes over 2C. At that point, I think you can move Reinhart to wing. But I see no need to rush it. In terms of a 4C, i WOULD LOVE to see Matej Pekar take a jump and potentially fill that spot. Big body, loves to throw his body around, can be a penalty killer, and will throw down if need be. Just my opinion. I prefer looking internally as opposed to signing someone at this point. Our FA record has not been stellar as of late.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shibbal18</b></div><div>Reinhart has a career 38% FO win rate and this year he's averaging 42%. He hasnt been a good center at all. Also putting top 6 forwards in the bottom 6 doesnt create more scoring lines, it cuts their minutes and thus negatively impacts their games. Not only are they going to cut their minutes in half, theyre going to not get as many offensive zone starts, they will disappear. They need a legit physical checking line, just like every other successful team in the league has built.</div></div>
Both Eichel and Mcdavid started out in their careers at 40% off faceoff guys. Both now at almost 50%. I do believe faceoffs are something Reinhart can add to his game, it's never been absent, it just needs improvement. And in terms of Cozens and his development, I feel the need to be cautious. If you look at Buffalo over the last 10 years, we have proven time and time again that we sometimes rush young players into roster spots (whether small or large) and in large part it hasn't worked out. Grigorenko, Mittlestadt (until as of late), and even guys like Guhle and Fasching. Do I think Cozens is better than these players in therms of his development at this time vs theirs at their early careers? YES. Do I think Cozens needs time at ROC? NO. But do I want to make sure that Cozens isn't forced into a role that could be too big for him or ask too much of him. ABSOLUTELY. This next year at 3C is perfect for him in my mind.

This is the first time in his career with BUF where he is getting an extended look at C. He was drafted as a C, it was his main position his entire youth, and then Buffalo decided to make him a winger only. He has proven that he can center a line and hold it down. BUF needs a 2C. Cozens will be ready, just not at this moment. Super talented, just don't want to rush him as 2C. 3C allows him to learn, develop, still log good playing time, and gives him time to put on muscle. Sam at 2C is a MUST for me, and I think he deserves it. The money is a fair price for him, so I think he takes it.
In terms of the 4th line, since Granato has taken over, they have been the most production filled line on this team. They have had time together in ROC, and it's showing at the NHL level. They will not only compete, but they will take advantage of other teams weaker 4th lines. And FWIW, any 4th line put together will be LOADS better than one with Eakin on it. End of discussion lol

I could also see them have Samuelsson have another year in ROC and resign McCabe. I probably should have done that, and am not opposed to it. Ned to see how his recovery goes though. Tearing the Big 3 in your knee isn't always easy to come back from.
For Risto, with the way his contract is, I think he is of more value to keep. That being said, if we can snag a decent wing from a team who wants someone like Risto (looking at WPG here), I would not be opposed. Frankly, I like Gusev (think he just had an awful year this year) and I think he would do wonders on a line with Eichel.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>This is a fair point, but I think you have to do your best to sell Eichel on 2-3 more years of pain so that they can complete the rebuild properly. Those 5 guys are an amazing core, and they’re only a few complementary pieces (Reinhart+#8+Jokiharju is a good start for add-ons) away from being a consistent playoff threat. Trying to do a patchwork job like this makes you the new Wild, consistently in the hunt and usually making the playoffs, but never actually going anywhere. Short term pain for long term gain is tough to sell to an outstanding player who’s put up with you losing for 5 years already but if they panic the whole thing’ll fall apart. I also don’t even think this is a playoff team next year, it’s basically the same team except with Cirelli and a ton of young, unproven players, and Reinhart replaced by someone with a lower ceiling. That bottom 6 will get eaten alive.</div></div>
I sincerely hope you are right with selling Eichel for 3 more years. Thats a true TBD though so we will wait and see. I like Sam staying, but I could also see him going, which is why I made the deal. And i get the bottom six is rough. But there also wasn't the full list of UFAs available when making this roster, and I couldn't remember them all (and didnt feel like looking them all up). So with 8m in cap based off this roster i made, they could make moves for bottom 6 guys that would replace guys like Murray or Ruotsalainen. This roster also has me putting a lot of faith in someone like Virtanen, but I feel like a change of scenery would do wonders for him, and he would have a larger role on BUF than he did on VAN. just my thoughts.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabresparaavida</b></div><div>The way I see the team, the Sabres have 3 Weaknesses: C, RW, and G. You definitely improved the weakness at C by adding Cirelli. You then justify making RW significantly weaker by getting rid of our only top 6 RW. (Kahun may become one, but we can't say that he is one yet). That is not a "perfect trade target". You grabbed Virtanen "praying" that he'll be a 2nd line winger. We tried the same thing with players like Sheary and Vesey- you don't trade your only top 6 RW for an established player you are praying will become one. In this scenario you would also be praying Kahun could become a 1RW, not a great idea.
UPL is NOT ready for NHL action. He spent most of the year in Cincinnati, and when he did come to Rochester, he had an abysmal .874 save percentage-terrible for Rochester. What can possibly make you say he's ready for NHL action?</div></div>
Trading Sam gives you options. Cap space to make other deals, another high draft pick. Both of these could be HUGE at a trade deadline, where maybe they make a play for a winger? Just spitballing some ideas here. I know Sam going isn't good. Personally, I would like to see him stay. But this roster I made wasn't from what i wanted, it was from what i could see them actually doing. If its me, keep sam on the roster. Kahun as a L1 winger definitely isn't guaranteed, but I feel like he has the best chance to succeed there.
And the UPL situation is obviously up for debate, I just think they may have him get some NHL time. There are plenty of players who struggled at AHL level but have had success in NHL (Keith, Shattenkirk, Tanev, Sheahan), and even some goalies (Pickard, Talbot), so going solely off his limited AHL performance doesn't worry me too much. I get its still a risk, but I'm ok with taking this one.
